Max Brignola (152 pounds) and Jack Kelly (182 pounds) captured Super Region titles in their senior year. Brignola had a 5-0 decision over Shore’s Mike McGhee and Kelly had four first-period pins on Sunday at Hunterdon Central. There was more hardware to be earned all around the state with public sectional finals taking place on Tuesday. Enjoy the highlights! Camden 70 Haddonfield 42 | Boys | Group 2 South Final The two-time defending state champion Haddons knocked the Panthers out of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, but The High got its revenge this time around. Kentucky commit Lance Ware scored a game-high 19 points to lead the way for Camden. Freshman D.J. Wagner added 15 points in the victory. Andrew Gostovich scored a team-high 18 points for Haddonfield in the loss. The Panthers advance to face Group 2 Central champion Manasquan in the state semifinals on Thursday night. The Minutemen trailing by 12 in the first quarter fight their way back thanks to an impressive 18 point game from Sophomore standout Jayden Pierre. With the game tied at 54-54 late in the fourth quarter Pierre would hit the eventual go-ahead basket with :02 left. He finished with 18 points. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights: South Brunswick 72 Marlboro 71 | Boys | Central Jersey Group 4 Final Yathin Vemula’s buzzer-beating lay-in with less than a single second left on the clock was the reason South Brunswick topped Marlboro to win its first sectional title since 2007. The Vikings were paced all game long by Justin Carbone (30 points) and Devin Strickland (24 points, 9 rebounds) in this instant classic. Aleksy Friedman was Marlboro’s leading scorer with 21 points in the loss. Atlantic City 61 Cherry Hill East 44 | Boys|Group 4 South Final Trailing by three at halftime, the Vikings exploded in the second half to capture their seventh S.J. Group 4 title under head coach coach Gene Allen. Sha’ron Watson provided a huge spark off the bench in the third quarter in a wild sequence that included two steals and five of his eleven points. Stephen Byard scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to lead the Vikings. Andrade captured her second State Title with a first period pin in the finals over Avery Myers of Jackson Memorial. Emma Matera (Delran) 5-4 Emma Matera took a one-point lead into the third period, and then rode out the defending state champion Gabby Miller to win her first state crown. Alexis Rosano (Overbrook) 9-4 Freshman Alexis Rosano made a statement winning the 143-pound State Championship. Rosano beat Senior Jordan Katz. Precious Opara (West Orange), 9-2 After winning the state title at 136-pounds a year ago, Jess Johnson conquers a new weight class as she defeats Precious Opara to win the state championship at 151-pounds. JSZ’s James Mooney has the highlights: 161 Pound Final: Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg) p. Amanda Pace (North Bergen), 4:28 180 Pound Final: Kerly Borbor (New Brunswick) d. Amirah Giorgianni (Mainland) 9-5 (UTB) After falling short of a state title a year ago, Kerly Borbor buckled down to score a thrilling overtime victory. Borbor became the first wrestler in New Brunswick history to win a state championship. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights: 215 Pound Final: Sandra Guerrero (West Orange) d. Joelle Klein (Lower Cape May), 7-0 Undefeated senior Sandra Guerrero had won all of her matches by fall leading up to the state final. Heather Laffan arguably had the best week of her high school career and its the reason why the Warren Hills senior won JSZ’s Week 7 North Jersey Game Ball. Laffan dropped 25 points in a win against Hackettstown and scored her 1,000th career point later in the week. The Blue Streaks also advanced into the H/W/S semifinals set for this weekend. The girls state soccer tournament is underway and JSZ brings you four first-round matchups plus we check in on the number one high school soccer team in the nation, the St. Benedict’s Gray Bees boys who played in the Prep state semifinals. St. Benedict’s Prep 7 Lawrenceville 0 | Boys Prep A Semifinals A four-point performance from Celio Pompeu and a two-goal game from Ronald Mafunzwaini pushed St. Benedict’s Prep to a 7-0 win over Lawrenceville in the Satte Prep A semifinals. The Gray Bees are ranked as the consensus No. 1 ranked high school soccer team in America. They’ll play the Prep A state finals on Nov. 1 at 4:00 p.m. at Riverfront Park in Newark against the winner of Pennington vs. Hun, played Tuesday night. Watch the match highlights here: No. 13 Somerville 4 Warren Hills 1 | North 2 Group 3 Girls Round 1 Somerville the 3 seed in the North 2 Group 3 Tournament faced the Warren Hills, the 14 seed, at home during round 1 of the state playoffs. In this matchup, Somerville’s offense impressed with multiple goals scored by multiple players. Our MMJ Courtney DuPont was there with the full coverage. Hopewell Valley 1 Northern Burlington 2 – Central Group 3 First Round The Opening round of the Girls Central Group 3 Tournament saw a close physical battle between 12th seed Northern Burlington and 5th seed Hopewell Valley that left us scoreless at halftime. In the second Maddie Ellis put the Bulldogs on the board with an early score and goalkeeper Braylee Walters came up with a close save in the 1-0 victory. Hopewell will take on 4th seed Nottingham in the second round. Jersey Sports Zone wraps up Week Two of high school football with another great group of games in New Jersey. Eleven games of action are posted now. Watch our preview of coverage then scroll down to watch all the action St. Joe’s (Mont.) 24 DePaul 17 After beginning 2018 1-1 St. Joe’s (Montvale) faced arguably their toughest opponent of the season in just Week 2 when they squared up with DePaul Catholic. The Green Knights got a rematch of last year’s Non Public Group 3 State Final in which they lost 10-7. This time around SJR’s defense was a turnover machine and with Junior quarterback Michael Alaimo under center and a late game interception from Jimmy Ciarlo Jr. they came out victorious against the number three ranked team in the state. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez was there for all the action: Penns Grove 19 Paulsboro 6 The rematch of the South Jersey Group 1 finals didn’t go as planned for the reigning champions Paulsboro. Penns Grove caused four turnovers and soundly moved the ball all afternoon en route to a 19-6 victory over Paulsboro. SNJ Today’s Mike Frankel has all the highlights: Nottingham 24 Moorestown 21 Nottingham did not disappoint their fans during their 2018 season home opener. The Northstars scored three touchdowns in the first half helped keep the Northstars afloat in this game as the Moorestown Quakers posted a second half comeback. Click HERE To watch our Thursday Week 0 coverage featuring eight games Here’s a preview of all the games that are posted below to get you ready for a great Friday night of high school football from all around New Jersey: Don Bosco Prep 22 Byrnes (SC) 17 Don Bosco Prep came out hot Friday night and made a statement. The Ironmen capitalized on a 19-point fourth quarter rally to topple the Byrnes (SC) Rebels, who took down Don Bosco Prep last year. JSZ’s Jay Cook was on hand in Ramsey for this 48-minute battle: Red Bank Catholic 41 Saint John Vianney 14 Steve Lubischer had two TD runs and a TD pass to account for over 200 yards of offense as the Caseys ended the 38 game Shore Conference winning streak of SJV. Lubischer’s TD’s all came in the first half as the Caseys took a 20-0 lead into the halftime locker room. From there, coach Frank Edgerly’s team turned to its ground game as they produced three second-half TD runs by three different players. Kavon Chambers ran for 152 yards in a losing effort. Danny Bill scores a hat trick for the Devils in the first half, while Salvatore Lentine scored the game winner in OT. Seton Hall Prep entered Saturday’s match vs The Green Wave undefeated and ranked No. 2 in NJ, but it was business as usual for Delbarton. The Green Wave improved to 5-0 with a dominant 16-9 win, while handing the Pirates their first loss of the season. Hudson Catholic – 95 Marist – 43 Hudson County Tournament Quarterfinals Luther Muhammad poured in a season high 32 points while grabbing 8 boards, and Villanova bound point guard Jahvon Quinerly dished out 11 assists to go along with 15 points as Hudson Catholic came away with a 95-43 win over Marist in the Hudson County Tournament QuarterFinals. The No. 1 seeded Hawks advance to play Lincoln in the Semi-Finals on Tuesday Night. Watch Highlights of Hudson Catholic vs Marist below! Notre Dame 91 Steinert 70 – Mercer County Tournament Quarterfinals Saturday’s game between fourth seed Notre Dame and fifth seed Steinert was the match up most knew was inedible at some point in the Mercer County Tournament. These two were some of the Colonial Valley Conference’s best in the 2017-2018 season. The Fighting Irish took a 22-16 lead at the end of the first then Notre Dame began piling on the points from beyond the arc thanks to Kayla Burnett who had 17 to take a 48-33 lead at half time. Manasquan 50 Saint Rose 44 (OT) – Girls Faith Masonius hit a three-pointer with a minute to go to force overtime and Annie Mako scored all four of her points in OT to lead Manasquan to its 20th win of the season. Masonius finished the game with 23 points and 8 rebounds as the future Maryland Terp hit four three-pointers. Manasquan led for most of the game until Saint Rose put together a fantastic 4th quarter. Lucy Thomas had 14 points and 8 rebounds sparking the comeback. Lovin Marsicano made 3 of 4 free throws to put the Purple Roses up 42-39 before Masonius got the Warriors back even. All but one player on the Celtic’s roster scored, led by Alejandro Vasquez with 15 points. Senior point guard Marquis Nowell orchestrated the Celtic’s offense with precision, recording 8 assists while also playing tight defense on St. Benedict’s sharp shooting guards. Lincoln Academy (GA) 70 Trenton Catholic 64 – Boys With the regular season coming to a close Trenton Catholic (12-8) is looking to get some extra momentum heading into next week’s Mercer County Tournament where they are projected to be the top seed. While it has not been the ideal season for the Iron Mikes six of their losses come to NJ Top 20 teams. On Saturday TCA faced off with Georgia Prep power Lincoln Academy. Trenton Catholic managed to keep it a tight game in the first half but the size of brothers Harouna and Moulaye Sissoko was a mismatch that would eventually lead to a 70-64. Saint John Vianney 52 Long Island Lutheran 47 – Girls Sajada Bonner had 18 points and Brelynn Bellamy added 14 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Lancers to another quality win. SJV vaulted into the USA Today Top 25 national poll at #23 and faced off against a Long Island Lutheran team that has spent time in multiple national polls. SJV is a perfect 18-0 on the season. North will move onto round two of the H/W/S on Feb. 10th against the winner of Hackettstown vs Lenape Valley. Every week JSZ brings you the best highlights from around the state, and now we are asking you to vote for this week’s top players. Christian Brothers – 72 Colts Neck – 69 in 2OT The CBA Colts traveled to Colts Neck High School and handed the cougars their first loss of the season with a thrilling 72-69 win in double overtime. Stephen Braunstein led CBA with 19 points, including the go ahead bucket in double OT. Robby Hill scored 19, and Danny Gaines added 16 for Colts Neck in the loss. Middletown South – 60 Middletown North – 50 The Eagles of Middletown South came away with a 60-50 win over their arch rival Lions of Middletown North. Ryan Purcell and Dave Gervase each scored 18 points for South in the win. Dave Campbell added 20 points for Middletown North in the loss. The win helped Middletown South improve to 5-4 on the season. Warren Hills 63 Somerville 61 Two more top teams duked it out today in the Skyland conference, Warren Hills (7) and Somerville (9). Both teams got themselves into foul trouble late in the game, but it was Somerville who could not recover. In the 4th quarter, the Streaks were 11/14 from the foul line and in the entire game Devyn Gara made 11 of 15 from the line. Gara also tacked on four rebounds and sevens steals for Warren Hills as they defeated Somerville 63-61. Check out full highlights now: Somerville Record: 6-2 Warren Hills Record: 6-1 Princeton -38 Robbinsville 25 Robbinsville came into Tuesdays game sitting fourth in the Colonial Valley Conference rankings. However, it was Princeton who would take control of the game thanks to their defense and the shooting of Catherine Dyevich. They were able to hold Robbinsville to a season low 25 points. JSZ’s Nery Rodirugez was there for all the action! Ewing -68 West Windsor- Plainsboro North 45 5-1 West Windsor- Plainsboro North has been impressive so far this season taking down Trenton in dominating fashion just a couple games ago. Watch Thursday 12.21 High School Hoops Highlights
Jersey Sports Zone had camera crews around the state capturing great high school hoops action! Middletown North 67 Ocean 59 Rob Higgins had 20 points in the 4th quarter and 36 for the game reaching the 1,000 career point mark in a Lions road win. Higgins needed 32 to reach the milestone and was able to hit six free throws in the final minute to get reach 1,000. Jack Miller had 16 in the final eight minutes and 28 for the game with teammate Andrew Seager adding 20 in a losing effort. Ocean battled back from a 14 point deficit to get as close as three, but the Lions never relinquished the lead. Watch the highlights and a post-game interview with the Lions 1,000 point scorer: Teaneck – 90 Bergenfield – 73 Aaron Sanchez poured in 27 points on 6 three pointers and senior point guard Ja’Quaye James added 17 for the Highwaymen, as Teaneck High School recorded a big road win over Bergenfield. Teaneck, coming off of back to back state title seasons, has almost an entirely new roster, but the Highwaymen have gotten off to a 3-1 start in 2017. Matawan 64 Shore Regional 38 Mike Dunne had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Reggie Tawiah added a dozen as the Huskies bounced back from a tough home loss to RFH with a road win in “A” Central play. Trenton-76 Steinert 70 Fans crowded the gym in Hamilton for a local rivalry showdown between Trenton and Steinert Thursday night. The Spartans came out hot leading by three at the end of the first quarter, but Ji’Ayir Brown for Trenton answered back with a few big scores and the Tornadoes never looked back as they took down Steinert 76-70 in this Colonial Valley Conference match up. Warren Hills 59 Cranford 47 Warren Hills obtained the lead early in this one, and held it throughout despite Cranford’s efforts to close the gap in the 2nd half. It was Alan Freeman’s 3 pointer at the end of the 3rd period that seemed to seal the deal for the Blue Streaks as they defeated the Cougars 59-47. Warren Hills’ Garrett Koch is Courtney’s Week 6 Game Ball Winner!
Koch took over at the QB Position during week 5 after Senior QB, Cooper Gabrich, was injured against the Immaculate Spartans. Fortunately, Koch’s first full game showcased the skills he will bring to the Blue Streaks as the team defeated the Montgomery Cougars 14-10. Immaculata Spartans Extend Win Streak to 5 Straight Games
The Warren Hills Blue Streaks had their senior night this evening against the Immaculata Spartans. The Blue Streaks come in 5-7-1, while the Spartans enter 6-4. However, this game was dominated by the Spartan offense led by Kendal Davis and Alan Frank in their 2-0 victory over the Warren Hills Blue Streaks. Warren Hills & P-Burg are both Unsatisfied with a Draw
Both teams are disappointed with the conclusion of this year’s rivalry game, but seem to understand what they need to improve as they head into their weekend matchups.
