Watch Friday 9.24 JSZ Football Highlights
Week 4 begins with some spectacular games all over the Garden State. Enjoy the highlights! St. Augustine 31 Millville 17 The Hermits lost to the Thunderbolts in 2020, but the Prep exacted revenge on Friday night. Kanye Udoh rushed for 157 yards and a pair of touchdowns as St. Augustine earned yet another signature South Jersey win. Trey McLeer threw a pair of TD passes in the victory. Princeton commit Nasir Hill and Sacred Heart commit Kenny Selby each had a TD catch in the victory for the Hermits (4-1). Syracuse commit LeQuint Allen rushed for a TD for Millville (3-1) in the loss. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the highlights from the OceanFirst Bank Game of the Week: The Game of the Week is brought to you by OceanFirst Bank. Bergen Catholic 17 Don Bosco 0 Bergen Catholic stewed on last year’s last-second loss to archrival Don Bosco for an entire offseason, but earned their redemption on the first opportunity. The Crusaders leaned on a stingy defense and a violent rushing attack to secure a revenge win Friday night. Bergen Catholic (4-0), who is the No. 1 team in the state, limited Don Bosco (1-3) to 124 total yards of offense. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights from Ramsey: Jersey Sports Zone’s coverage of Bergen Catholic is proudly supported by Rothman Orthopaedics. Washington Twp. 21 Cherokee 14 (OT) The Minutemen are off to its best start since 2009, and pick up a signature victory in an overtime thriller against the Chiefs. Senior RB/DB Nah’mere Graves scored three touchdowns, and pitched in on the fourth-down stop in overtime to seal the win for Washington Twp. (4-0). Junior RB Brandon “Bam” Boria rushed for a touchdown in the loss for Cherokee (1-2). JSZ’s James Mooney has the highlights and reaction from Marlton: Coverage of Washington Twp. is brought to you by Cooper University Health Care. Phillipsburg 44 Franklin 0 After starting 0-2, Phillipsburg (2-2) has picked up their second straight win following a dominating 44-0 victory over Franklin (0-4). The Stateliners opened the game with a safety on Franklin’s first drive and went ahead 9-0 thanks to a three yard touchdown run from Rai’quan Dixon. After scores from Xavier Moore and Gifton Friday-Johnson, Phillipsburg would lead 23-0 at halftime. Their defense was key in the matchup, recording two forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and two interceptions to get their second straight shut out. Quarterback Tristen Canzano in his first game back since week one had a passing and rushing touchdown. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights: Thank you to the Garnet Booster Club for sponsoring our Phillipsburg coverage. Ewing 28 Hightstown 24 Tariq McKinney’s 32-yard TD pass to Tyreek Rollins with :45 seconds left gave Ewing a thrilling come from behind win on the road. McKinney had thrown a pick-six to give Hightstown a 24-21 lead in the 4th quarter but his resilience showed in the game-winning TD pass. JSZ’s Darron Wallace has the highlights of a great back and forth game: Thanks to Princeton Orthopaedic Associates for sponsoring JSZ’s coverage of Ewing and Hightstown

Hillsborough Beats Phillipsburg in OT
Hillsborough 21 Phillipsburg 14 OT Phillipsburg (0-2) suffered more than just a loss in the record books during its week one bout with St. Joe’s (Montvale); the Stateliners plagued by injuries following the game were without their starting quarterback Tristen Canzano and fullback Ra’Quan Dixon for their matchup with Hillsborough (2-0). P-Burg raced out to a 14-0 lead on back to back scores from Xavier Moore in the first quarter before the Raiders cut the deficit to 14-6 at halftime. In the fourth quarter Thomas Amankwaa not only tied the game on a 58 yard touchdown run, but also gave Hillsborough the go-ahead score in overtime and sealed the night with a clutch interception. Amankwaa rushed for 161 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights: These free highlights brought to you by the Garnett Booster Club. Thank you to Princeton Orthopaedic Associates for sponsoring our Hillsborough coverage.

St. Joe’s and Phillipsburg Football Meet On Saturday Night
Week one of JSZ’s high school football coverage continues with a match up between two of New Jersey’s most storied programs going head to head under the lights on Saturday night. After starting the 2021 season 0-1, St. Joseph (Montvale) was slated to hit the road for Maryland, but last minute cancellations found them heading to the state’s most winningest football town, Phillipsburg. The Stateliners held Joe’s to a 14-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter before a fumble returned for a touchdown by Smiechowski and a late score from Yasin Willis sealed the game. Jaden Wimberly had two touchdown receptions. Nery Rodriguez has the highlights from Phillipsburg: These free highlights are courtesy the Garnett Booster Club. Thank you to Rothman Orthopaedics for sponsoring our St. Joseph (Montvale) coverage.

Year in Review: JSZ’s Top 20 of 2020
The year 2020 was made up of 12 unforgettable months. That sentiment especially rings true for New Jersey’s high school sports community. Jersey Sports Zone’s team of MMJ’s gathered for a year-in-review roundtable, discussing the Top 20 stories we covered this year. Thank you to our loyal audience who followed along with us through one of the most trying years we’ll remember. Happy New Year, and here’s to a happy and healthy 2021! JSZ Top 20 of 2020 Pt. 1 JSZ Top 20 of 2020 Pt. 2 No. 20: The Final Game Before COVID-19 Shutdown Bergen Catholic and St. Peter’s Prep. These two were among the top basketball teams in New Jersey last season, and delivered a double-overtime showdown in the last game JSZ covered in the 2020 winter season. It signaled the near end of the basketball season and the beginning of a long statewide shutdown. No. 19: Gill St. Bernard’s Rules NJ Soccer Scene 2020 was a year to remember for the Knights of Gill St. Bernard’s. All-state striker Micaah Garnette, who delivered 21 goals and 14 assists, was the main catalyst to a 13-0-1 squad that went on to win a Central West Non-Public sectional final against Skyland rival Pingry. The Knights were undoubtedly the top team at the end of the line. No. 18: Leon Jones’ Inspiring Comeback It was a year in which many would have to overcome tough circumstances. For Notre Dame’s Leon Jones, his journey to redemption began before COVID-19. Following a collision against St. Peter’s Prep in a playoff football game, Jones was left paralyzed for almost 48 hours. After regaining feeling in both of his legs, doctors were still unsure if he would be able to walk normally, let alone play sports again. However, midway through the basketball season, Leon Jones not only started his first game as a senior, but Jersey Sports Zone was there to watch him lead his team to victory. No. 17: South Jersey’s Ware & Watson Earn Top Basketball Honors There was no shortage of talent on the high school basketball court last winter, but Camden’s Lance Ware and Mainland’s Kylee Watson proved to be the best of the best. Ware, a Kentucky commit, was the senior leader for a Panthers team that finished the season on a 25-game winning streak. Watson, an Oregon commit, surpassed 2,000 career points in a decorated career for the Mustangs. Ware and Watson earned the JSZ Mr. and Ms. Hoop Zone awards, as the top players in the Garden State. No. 16: Camden Basketball Reigns Supreme in Garden State Hoops Scene It was the most anticipated season for The High in a generation, and the Panthers did not disappoint. Led by fabulous freshman D.J. Wagner, Kentucky commit Lance Ware, and South Carolina commit TaQuan Woodley, Camden went (29-1). The High was without a home gym for the 2019/2020 season, but Panthers fans followed the team all over the state and beyond to watch this special journey. Camden was in great position to win its first state title since 2000, before the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to the postseason. No. 15: Delbarton Wrestling Delivers Historic Year on the Mat When wrestling fans in Morristown – and across the state – look back on the 2019-2020 season, they’ll remember the incredible effort Delbarton put forth to cement themselves as the No. 1 program in New Jersey. It all started with a 42-15 victory over Bergen Catholic in the Non-Public A North semifinals where the Green Wave ended the Crusaders’ 96-match win streak against NJSIAA competition. That began a run of postseason excellence ending in Delbarton’s first state title since 2011. No. 14: CBA, Donohoe are Kings of NJ Ice The Gordon Conference is home to the elite New Jersey hockey programs, yet it was the private school from Monmouth County that slayed numerous Bergen County teams en route to attaining gold at the end of the road. The Colts, who won 20 games, the Gordon Cup and the Non-Public State Final, were led all year long by sophomore goalie John Donohoe. Donohoe went on to win JSZ’s 2020 Player of the Year after making 501 saves in electric fashion. No. 13: Jewel Gonzalez Sets the Standard A pioneer to Stateliner and New Jersey wrestling, Jewel Gonzalez was the face of girls wrestling in New Jersey during her high school career. Coming from one of the most storied and successful wrestling programs in the Garden State in Phillipsburg, Gonzalez won back-to-back girls state wrestling championships in Boardwalk Hall. During her two seasons, Gonzalez amassed an undefeated 30-0 record as she pinned her way through the state tournament as a senior. Gonzalez capped off her state championship the same way many other Stateliners had done before her, by jumping into the ocean. No. 12: JSZ’s “One Shining Moment” As the world shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic, JSZ set out to commemorate the best of the 2019-20 high school basketball season. With the blessing of the song’s composer, David Barrett, JSZ was able to produce a unique version of the March Madness staple, “One Shining Moment.” No. 11: Scottie Lewis Leads off the Court Rounding out Part 1 of our look back at 2020 is a story that transcended sports. Ranney-alumni Scottie Lewis returned home to Asbury Park to lead a peaceful protest over the summer. It was a day that few would forget as organizers, protesters, and police officers joined together to rally against racial injustice and inequality. No. 10: Abrupt Cancellations of Two High-Profile Games Postponements and cancellations were common during the 2020 football season. The timing of a pair of cancellations stood out late in the season though, as Bergen Catholic-Delbarton was called off just before kickoff, and Williamstown-Ocean City was abandoned at halftime. No. 9: Morristown-Beard Girls Hockey Makes History Girls sports in the Garden State took another important step forward in 2020 with the inaugural state ice hockey championship. Morristown-Beard skated to victory at the Prudential Center in Newark. No. 8: Bosco and Seton Hall Prep Earn Signature Wins It felt like Bergen Catholic would face St. Peter’s with the state’s #1 ranking on the line to close out the year. Don Bosco and Seton Hall Prep had other ideas. The Ironmen stunned the Crusaders, while the Pirates topped the Marauders down the stretch of the season. No. 7: A SportsCenter Top 10 Moment for Manasquan Chris Farinacci beat the buzzer with a sensational goal to lift Manasquan over St. John Vianney. The highlight went national, making the rounds on ESPN. No. 6: Shore Conference and WJFL Pod Playoffs The 2020 football season didn’t feature the traditional playoff format. The Shore Conference and the West Jersey Football League still made it a memorable “postseason” for a handful of top teams, with the creation of playoff pods. Wall and Holy Spirit battled their way to 2020 bragging rights. No. 5: Howard and Peterson Electrify in Atlantic City Robert Howard and Dean Peterson both travelled down to Atlantic City on a mission. The standouts from Bergen Catholic and St. John Vianney captured state titles in impressive fashion at Boardwalk Hall. No. 4: Estime Wins Zoneman & Commits to Irish Audric Estime ran roughshod over opponents in 2020. The St. Joe’s (Montvale) senior earned JSZ’s top football honor, the Zoneman award, and flipped his commitment from Michigan State to Notre Dame. It was an eventful day for Estime, and JSZ was on hand to capture it. No. 3: A JSZ All-Access Unlike Any Other Football teams had extra time to gear up for a unique season, and JSZ tagged along with a handful of squads leading up to opening night. We were able to tell unique stories from the practice fields at Bergen Catholic, Notre Dame, Ocean City and Rumson-Fair Haven, as the teams laid the groundwork on how to play during the COVID-19 pandemic. No. 2: Spring Athletes Were Truly Jersey Strong The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the entire spring sports schedule in 2020. It was devastating to thousands of athletes, but especially to the seniors. A handful of those seniors delivered a powerful message as they reflected on their high school careers. No 1: The Last Dance Brought Closure and Hope Although it wasn’t an official NJSIAA event, The Last Dance baseball tournament gave over 200 teams a chance to finally take the field after the cancellation of the spring season. It was a memorable month of July, as Cranford won the title, and all of the teams provided a blueprint on how high school sports could move forward during the darkest of times.

Berger, named a 2020 All-American, delivered the goods in his senior season while accounting for 1,218 scrimmage yards and 17 touchdowns for the Ironmen. Berger remains uncommitted yet holds offers from college football’s best — Alabama, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, LSU and Michigan are among the schools recruiting him. The announcement will come on live TV during the All-American bowl on Jan. 4 from San Antonio, TX. Jada Byers, St. Joseph (Hamm.) There’s no other way to put it — Jada Byers is the most dynamic scoring threat to ever grace South Jersey. Byers, a Sacred Heart commit, was an electric runner with the football who scored a South Jersey record 102 touchdowns in three years of varsity play with the Wildcats. His mark of 644 career points ranks second in South Jersey history only behind Kevin Harvey. The highlights of Byers’ 2019 season was a 10-touchdown performance against Morris Catholic in the sectional semifinals. Fadil Diggs, Woodrow Wilson There might not be a better two-way player in the Garden State. The Woodrow Wilson star and future Texas A&M Aggie shined on both sides of the ball in a stellar 2019 season. He collected 95.5 tackles and 17.5 sacks on defense while also catching 65 passes for 1,031 yards and 11 touchdowns on offense. Woodrow Wilson head coach Preston Brown told JSZ Diggs is the best player in Camden’s history. Kyle Monangai, Don Bosco Prep Talk to anyone in North Jersey and they’ll tell you Don Bosco Prep doesn’t get back to it’s winning ways without Kyle Monangai on the field. After transferring to the Ramsey private school from Seton Hall Prep after his sophomore season, Monangai put up eye-popping numbers. He put up 2,903 scrimmage yards on 310 touches with 35 touchdowns in arguably the toughest conference in America. He holds 25-plus D-I offers yet remains uncommitted. Cody Simon, St. Peter’s Prep He’s the best player on the best team in New Jersey — does anything else need to be said? Simon’s boasts one of the most polished resume’s we’ve seen in years. He was a preseason for the 2019 Butkus Award, was one of five N.J. players named an All-American and is committed to play at Ohio State. Simon led the Marauders with 106 tackles, 4.5 sacks, four interceptions and four touchdowns on defense and special teams. Luke Wypler, St. Joe’s (Mont.) What does it take to be ranked the No. 1 center in the entire country? Watch the way Luke Wypler dominates on the gridiron. Wypler’s intelligence and intensity on the field is a major reason why St. Joe’s had the toughest offensive line in the state — that translated to a Non-Public Group 4 championship in 2018. Wypler, also named a 2020 All-American, is committed to play at Ohio State after a stellar career in Montvale.

Leg Injury Doesn’t Halt Miller From Pitching Stateliners to 4-0 Victory
When Phillipsburg’s Ryan Miller took a come-backer straight off his right shin in the 4th inning, it seemed like his day on the mound might have been over. But the welt and a noticeable limp afterwards didn’t stop Miller – instead it gave him an additional adrenaline boost. He threw six shutout innings and struck out eight Immaculata batters en route to the Stateliners securing a 4-0 win. He is one of five New Jersey players selected to play in the 2019 All-American Bowl and is committed to play for Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide. Alfano dominated his competition in the Greater Middlesex Conference with 79 tackles and 10 sacks this season, along with a staggering 28 tackles for losses. JSZ’s Jay Cook gives you the inside-look at what makes Alfano such a highly-touted prospect: Jada Byers, St. Joseph (Hamm.) Running Back Byers was as electric as they come in the Garden State during his junior campaign. He looked like he was shot out of a cannon with the ball in his hands, rushing for 1,741 yards and 29 touchdowns on the season, all while helping power his St. Joe’s Wildcats to yet another Non-Public Group 2 championship. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez takes you down to Hammonton for a behind-the-scenes look at South Jersey’s most electrifying runner: Jalahn Dabney, Somerville Quarterback Dabney took over the starting quarterback job in Somerville at the end of the 2017 season and showcased his dynamic playmaking ability well throughout 2018. He compiled 3,444 yards from scrimmage this season and reached the end-zone 56 times to lead one of New Jersey’s most dangerous offenses. JSZ’s Courtney DuPont tells us what makes this dual-threat quarterback tick: Nick Kargman, Woodrow Wilson Quarterback Kargman will graduate from Woodrow Wilson with plenty of state records compiled during his senior season. The decorated South Jersey passer broke the state record single season passing mark with 3,963 yards and his 41 passing scores rank atop the state lists, as well. But what’s even more impressive is Kargman’s character off the field, as it’s made him an important part of the Woodrow Wilson community. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez tells us what makes Kargman so special: Rahmir Johnson, Bergen Catholic Running Back Johnson became the first Bergen Catholic rusher to break the 1,000-yard mark since 2008, a true testament to the level of competition that the Crusaders face on a week-to-week basis. After teammate Josh McKenzie went down with a torn ACL, Johnson assumed the full-time starting role and showcased his elite speed and craftiness all season long. He closed 2018 with 1,334 yards and 11 rushing scores. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story about this humble teammate and Nebraska commit: Steve Lubischer, Red Bank Catholic Quarterback Intelligence and athleticism is the blend of characteristics that has made Lubischer one of New Jersey’s most talented signal callers. At Red Bank Catholic, Lubischer blossomed into a premier dual-threat passer who had the ability to break the game on any down. JSZ’s chief operating officer Rich Chrampanis followed Lubischer’s trajectory all season long and tells us why this Boston College commit is so special: Other Top Vote-Getters Only the top-six vote-getters are on our Zoneman podium, but there were other plenty of players around the Garden State who had great seasons and garnered votes from coaches and media around the state. Those players were: 7th Place: Taquan Roberson, DePaul Catholic quarterback: Roberson, a Penn State commit, closed out his senior season in masterful fashion for the Spartans. He threw 29 touchdowns for 2,432 yards and will go down as one of the most decorated quarterbacks to play in New Jersey. 8th Place: Jalen Berger, Don Bosco Prep running back: Berger led one of New Jersey’s most talented backfields at Don Bosco Prep by displaying elite patience and explosiveness.
