Watch Thursday 2.3 JSZ Basketball Highlights
We have a pair of games for you tonight, including a thriller between the Hammonton and St. Joseph Academy boys. On the girls side, Monroe takes on Bound Brook. Hammonton 43 St. Joseph Academy 41 | Boys In this fierce battle between crosstown rivals, Hammonton freshman Kenny Smith scored with four seconds left to lift the Blue Devils to victory. John Andoloro scored a game-high 13 points for Hammonton (9-7). Qiani Bowens scored a team-high 12 points for the Wildcats (12-4) in the loss. Bound Brook 54 Monroe 31 | Girls Bound Brook (13-4) picked up a fourth straight win following a 54-31 victory over Monroe (11-3). A big first half from Jamaiya Rogers had Bound Brook ahead 25-17 after two quarters. Casey Miller would take over the second half as the Crusaders eventually pushing the lead passed 20 in the fourth. Max Brignola (152 pounds) and Jack Kelly (182 pounds) captured Super Region titles in their senior year. It’s the final day of the 2019 high school soccer season in the Garden State and four teams from the public ranks will be crowned as champions at Kean University. Follow along with JSZ throughout the day as we’ll have all the highlights right here! Millburn 0 Wall 0 | Millburn (3-2) in PK’s | Group 3 Final It may have taken over 100 minutes, but the Millburn Millers are one of the happiest teams in New Jersey. Keeper Zach Barr was stellar in goal all afternoon long, snagging nine saves through regulation and overtime and then two more in PK’s to help seal the win. Botti scored off a corner kick that went off a Delran defender’s hand and Ferriera scored on a direct kick from 45 yards out. Sectional champions squared off on Thursday night for the right to advance to Sunday’s state finals at Kean University. Check back throughout the night for all of the highlights! Clifton 3 Elizabeth 2 (2OT) | Group 4 Semifinal This head-to-head matchup of two undefeated teams delivered one of the most wild, roller-coaster games there’s been in 2019. After battling to a 2-2 score late in the second half, a fight broke out with :01 remaining in regulation. Each team had a player ejected after red cards were doled out. Clifton, however, battled through the adversity and came out with the win courtesy of a Danny Tobon golden goal (96′). The Mustangs will face Hunterdon Central in the Group 4 title game Sunday afternoon. Hunterdon Central 2 Toms River North 1 | Group 4 Semifinal The Red Devils fell behind 1-0 early before storming back to take down the Mariners. Ali Baish opened the scoring for Toms River North, before Central’s Brady Mullins tied the game before halftime. Marc Costa gave the Red Devils the lead early in the second half, and they hung on for the victory. Hunterdon Central will face Clifton in the Group 4 state final on Sunday at 12:30. The Crimson Knights girls’ soccer team reached Kean University on a golden goal one day earlier and now the boys are heading to Union as well. Wall picks up its 16th shutout of the season. The Millers scored in the 58th minute when Malcolm Migoya found brother Alex for the games only goal. Keeper Zach Barr finished with 12 saves. Millburn will look to take home their first title since 2012 after falling to Ocean Township in the big game last season. It’s official! Week Seven of the high school football season in New Jersey has come to a close and JSZ has all corners of the state represented in yet another thrilling weekend. Seton Hall Prep 28 St. Joe-Montvale 27 The Pirates executed a double pass on 4th and goal from the 6 that resulted in a Jack Larsen TD catch to give the Pirates a stunning upset over the #2 team in the state polls. Zander Zebrowsky threw for 190 yards and 2 TD’s, both to tight end Dominic Busby and Matt Colonatuono had a TD run and the pass to Larsen in the victory. St. Joe’s Audric Estime ran for 247 yards and 3 TD’s in the loss. The Comets closed their regular season out with arguably their most dominant performance of the year, powered by three first-half touchdowns from Fatir Bell. Hillside has outscored their opposition 325-28 through 2019. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights from Conant Park: St. Joe (Hamm.) 41 Timber Creek 16 Jada Byers turned in another monster performance, scoring four touchdowns to lead the Wildcats past the Chargers. Two of Byers’ scores came on defense, including a 101-yard interception return for a score. Jayden Shertel threw a touchdown pass to Tyrell Russell, with Ahmad Ross finding the end zone in the win for St. Joseph as well. Parsippany Hills 35 West Essex 7 JD Breslauer continues to light defenses up in his stellar senior season with the Vikings. JSZ’s Kenneth Bradley has all the highlights: Cedar Creek 47 Delsea 12 It was a sensational Senior Day for Cedar Creek (6-2) as they dominated Delsea (2-5). Senior quarterback Louie Barrios racked up five touchdowns through the air to pace a Pirates offense that resembled a Man-O-War on Saturday afternoon. Senior Manny Reid and sophomore JoJo Bermudez reeled in two touchdowns apiece in the win. It’s a bittersweet time of year for us as the basketball season begins to come to a close, but Jersey Sports Zone is pleased to bring you coverage of ALL the 2019 NJSIAA State Tournament Finals from 3.10. Stay tuned for: Newark East Side vs. Freehold Township (Group 4), West Side vs. Haddonfield (Group 2), Ramapo vs. Moorestown (Group 3), New Providence vs. Burlington City, Chatham vs. Mainland (Group 3, Girls), Lincoln vs. Manchester Township (Group 2, Girls), Franklin vs. Lenape (Group 4, Girls) and University vs. Bound Brook (Group 1, Girls). Those highlights on the way! Boys State Championships – Rutgers University Newark East Side 69 Freehold Township 44 – Group 4 State Championship` East Side captured its first Group 4 State Championship since 2014 with a win over Freehold Township. After losing in the same game last year the Red Raiders find redemption thanks to Junior Mikah Johnson who finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. East Side trailed 16-12 after the first quarter, but thanks to a 20-6 run in the second quarter they eventually went up by as many as 30. The other contributing fact in the victory was Senior Anas Amos who had 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights: Haddonfield 64 Newark West Side 53 – Group 2 State Championship Mike DePersia scored 10 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter as Haddonfield held off an amazing comeback attempt by the Rough Riders in the 4th quarter. The Bulldogs held a 43-28 advantage mid-way through the third quarter before West Side put together a 16-0 run to take a 44-43 lead. But DePersia stepped up with five straight points and Drew Gavranich had 17 off the bench to give Haddonfield back to back titles. Thanks to NJM we were able to bring you state championship highlights of the Bulldogs! Moorestown 58 Ramapo 44 – Group 3 State Championship History was made at Rutgers University. Moorestown’s Group 3 state championship win on Sunday was the first for the Quakers in the last 60 years. Moorestown played a complete game, limiting Ramapo’s scoring chances while also playing a great game themselves. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights: Haddonfield 69 Camden 67 (OT) – Boys South Jersey Group 2 Final Haddonfield stormed back from a double-digit deficit late in the fourth quarter to force overtime, beating Camden for the South Jersey Group 2 title for the second year in a row. Dan Fleming caught fire down the stretch to lead the Haddons with 28 points. Mike DePersia also had a big game with 19 points in the win. Bound Brook 45 Middlesex 31 – Girls Central Jersey Group 1 Final The #1 Bound Brook Crusaders defeated the #2 Middlesex Blue Jays on Monday night, winning their fourth straight Sectional Title. Bound Brook’s Cortlyn Morris not only scored the game-high of 19 points, but she also walked away with a triple-double. She had 12 blocks and 10 rebounds. Arianna McCleod and Cameron Ward also scored in the double digits. McCleod scored 12 points, and Ward scored 11 and had 15 rebounds with a double-double. The Gray Bees are ranked as the consensus No. 1 ranked high school soccer team in America. They’ll play the Prep A state finals on Nov. 1 at 4:00 p.m. at Riverfront Park in Newark against the winner of Pennington vs. Hun, played Tuesday night. Rodrigo Valera scored the equalizer later in the first half and the rest of the game saw outstanding goalkeeping from both Marcello Medrano and Rodriguez. Mabrey scored 35, Mullaney had 27 and Faith had an incredible stat line of 20 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists. Newark Tech rallied from 18 down in the second half to get within five. Mariah Perez had 19 points and 17 rebounds in a losing effort. Manasquan 77 Middletown North 35 Congrats to Manasquan’s Faith Masonius on cracking the 1,000 career point mark! In a 77-35 win in front of her home crowd on Friday night, Faith poured in 22 points and scored points 999 and 1,000 on a pair of free throws in the 2nd quarter. Faith, a Class of 2019 forward, joins teammate Dara Mabrey and Class of 2017 point guard Stella Clark as Lady Warriors to crack 1,000 career points in the last two seasons. Mabrey chipped in big-time as well, scoring 27 points and was 4/4 on three-pointers. Lola Mullaney also played a complete game, adding in a season-high 24 points in the win. Trailing 17-4 at the end of one, Middletown South used a 12-0 run in the second quarter to get back into the game, but the Eagles never took the lead. Let’Em Play Football Showcase
Let’Em Play is a organization that started in 2007 and was founded by Bound Brook’s Assistant Football Coach, Dave LePoidevin. For the past ten years Dave and his staff have conducted an annual LEP Discover Football Camp in the fall, as well as, a separate LEP Football Academy in both the winter and spring. LePoidevin says Let’Em Play encourages student athletes to continue their football careers at the DII & DIII level, while also exposing them to DII & DIII coaches. NJ’s best gather for 2017 JSZ Football Banquet
Jersey Sports Zone brought the top players from the 2017 New Jersey high school football season to the APA Hotel in Woodbridge for our first football banquet. Our All-Zone consisted of top position players from around the state. Our Plays of the Week and Plays of the Year winners were also honored. The night culminated with our Prep Offensive and Defensive Players of the year and the presentation of JSZ’s Zoneman Trophy, awarded to the top player in New Jersey. Freehold Boro’s Ashante Worthy captured the vote from coaches and media around the state following a 4,000 yard combined offensive season with over 60 touchdowns for the Colonials: 2017 Zoneman Trophy Balloting JSZ secured votes from head coaches and media around the state (55 total) to ask their vote for the most outstanding player in New Jersey. 1st place votes get 3 points, 2 points for 2nd and 1 point for 3rd. Moore sparks RBC into T of C semifinals
Hayley Moore scored 17 points off the bench including a trio of three-pointers in the first half to help RBC earn a 62-39 win over Bound Brook in the opening round of the Tournament of Champions.
