Tonight’s menu features a big South Jersey showdown as Wildwood Catholic prevails in OT at St. Joe-Hammonton plus Bishop Ahr continues to pile up wins in the GMC Wildwood Catholic 78 St. Joe Hammonton 73 (OT) Jahlil White scored 29 points and Taj Thweatt added 20 points, 16 rebounds and 6 blocked shots to give the Crusaders a big overtime win on the road to improve to 12-1 on the season. Marcellus Ross had 34 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort. SNJ Today’s Mike Frankel has the highlights from one of the top games of the season in South Jersey: Bishop Ahr 93 South River 64 Bishop Ahr picked up its sixth win in a row with a 93-64 win over Greater Middlesex Conference rival South River. The Trojans went on a 12-0 run to begin the game before eventually leading 50-31 at halftime. In the second half Bishop Ahr raised the differential as high as 30 points before pulling their starters going into the fourth. Girls basketball takes center stage on Monday as we bring you three games including top 10 state powers Manasquan and Saint Rose. We also have a big Shore Conference boys showdown between Manasquan and Rumson-Fair Haven. St. Rose 55 Red Bank Catholic 42 St. Rose made a statewide announcement Monday night that they’ll be one of New Jersey’s toughest girls hoops teams after a big test against Red Bank Catholic. Metuchen transfer Brynn Farrell slid right into the lineup and dropped 28 points in her second game as a Purple Rose. Monday soccer from JSZ features two state-ranked showdowns and the start of conference tournament play. St. Peter’s Prep 2 Kearny 1 – Boys Soccer Both the Marauders and Kardinals fought it out to a tie nearly four weeks ago, but these two Hudson County squads gave it their all again in another thrilling matchup. Goal from Antonio Callegari and Kyle Hess along with stellar keeper play from Ulises Rodriguez helped St. Peter’s Prep notch a big win with the playoffs around the corner. JSZ has the highlights from these two Top 20 teams in Jersey City: No. 9 Watchung Hills 3 No. 10 Somerville 1 | Girls Soccer Top Ten Battle With Watchung Hills ranked ninth in the state, and Somerville ranked 10th, this game was a can’t miss. The Warriors made a statement in the first half when they scored three unanswered goals, and although Somerville shutdown the Watchung offense in the second half, they were unable to produce much offense themselves. Watchung Hills took the “W” 3-1. Jersey Sports Zone wraps up Week Two of high school football with another great group of games in New Jersey. Eleven games of action are posted now. Watch our preview of coverage then scroll down to watch all the action St. Joe’s (Mont.) 24 DePaul 17 After beginning 2018 1-1 St. Joe’s (Montvale) faced arguably their toughest opponent of the season in just Week 2 when they squared up with DePaul Catholic. The Green Knights got a rematch of last year’s Non Public Group 3 State Final in which they lost 10-7. This time around SJR’s defense was a turnover machine and with Junior quarterback Michael Alaimo under center and a late game interception from Jimmy Ciarlo Jr. they came out victorious against the number three ranked team in the state. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez was there for all the action: Penns Grove 19 Paulsboro 6 The rematch of the South Jersey Group 1 finals didn’t go as planned for the reigning champions Paulsboro. Penns Grove caused four turnovers and soundly moved the ball all afternoon en route to a 19-6 victory over Paulsboro. The Owls gained a commanding 3 goal lead at halftime, in the second half Highland Park only allowed a late goal in the closing minutes to walk away with a 5-2 victory. After an undefeated regular season South River was eliminated in the first round of the Central Group 2 Playoffs. South River 7 South Amboy 4 With only a few weeks remaining in the season Greater Middlesex Conference- Gold Division lead South River hosted division rival South Amboy. The Rams got on the board first and thanks to Hannah Kurtz who drove in two runs in the second they went up 6-0 early. South River was led by Erin Kowalski who allowed 6 hits, 2 earned runs and had six strike outs. They improve to 14-2 as part of a six game win streak and continue to be a force in the GMC. South River 10 East Brunswick Tech 6 Coming off impressive opening day victories Monday’s match up between Greater Middlesex Conference rivals South River and East Brunswick Tech was a mood swing of emotions. EB Tech jumped out to an early 4-0 lead thanks to Kayla Morales who would knock in the first run of the game then put on 4 shutout innings. However South River would come alive in the fourth with a bases clearing 3 RBI double from Erin Kowalski to bring them within one. Roselle Catholic – 75 Ranney School – 49 LSU Bound Naz Reid posted a double-double 14 points, 10 rebounds, and scored the 1,000th point of his high school career on Wednesday night at The Jersey Shore Challenge. Ithiel Horton led No. 1 Roselle Catholic with 19 points, and Kahlil Whitney added 17 as the top ranked Lions came away with a 75-49 win over The Ranney School, who was without starters Scottie Lewis (ankle) and Alex Klatsky (concussion). NJ’s best gather for 2017 JSZ Football Banquet
Jersey Sports Zone brought the top players from the 2017 New Jersey high school football season to the APA Hotel in Woodbridge for our first football banquet. Our All-Zone consisted of top position players from around the state. Our Plays of the Week and Plays of the Year winners were also honored. The night culminated with our Prep Offensive and Defensive Players of the year and the presentation of JSZ’s Zoneman Trophy, awarded to the top player in New Jersey. Freehold Boro’s Ashante Worthy captured the vote from coaches and media around the state following a 4,000 yard combined offensive season with over 60 touchdowns for the Colonials: 2017 Zoneman Trophy Balloting JSZ secured votes from head coaches and media around the state (55 total) to ask their vote for the most outstanding player in New Jersey. 1st place votes get 3 points, 2 points for 2nd and 1 point for 3rd. It’s the start of a new soccer season and after making it deep into the state playoffs last year, South River was looking to open 2017 with a win despite having a young team.
