Early on it was the Celtics leading RC, but the Lions thanks to University of Kentucky commit Kahlil Whitney were able to take the lead late in the third quarter and then hold off TPS in the closing seconds of the fourth. Whitney had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Clemson commit Al-Amir Dawes finished with 19 points and 9 rebounds. The game featured two of the top prospects in New Jersey. Mainland’s Kylee Watson led all scorers with 25 points for Mainland while Duke commit Azana Baines had 13 points for the Rams. JP Stevens 57 Bishop Ahr 46 | Boys Hoops Solomon Smith scored 21 points to lead the Hawks to a big crosstown win and reach the 4-0 mark. JP Stevens raced out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter and never relinquished the lead. Rutgers Prep staved off a couple offensive surges by the Celtics to secure the win. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights: Franklin 65 Gloucester Catholic 54 | Girls Hoops Diamond Miller, the University of Maryland commit, posted 26 points for the Franklin Warriors on Saturday afternoon against the Gloucester Catholic Rams. The Rams were a good competitor for the Warriors, with Azana Baines, who is committed to Duke. However, Miller was not the only player who walked off the court with an impressive number of points. Junior Keona Schenck was only five points behind Miller with 21. The No. 3 Warriors are off to a great start for the season, improving their overall record to 4-0. St. Peter’s Prep and St. Joe’s-Montvale battled for playoff positioning, the MAPL final between Peddie and Hun came down to the final play, plus we’ve got big regular-season finale wins for Delbarton and Edison. The win puts St. Joe’s at 7-2 on the season and they’re in the driver’s seat to a top seed in the Non-Public Group 4 playoffs. High School football is here! Jersey Sports Zone kicks off our 2018 coverage with great action from all around the state from Thursday’s openers. Here’s a preview of our coverage and just scroll down below to watch all of our games Hillsborough 27 Colonia 25 The Hillsborough Raiders staved off a fourth-quarter comeback from Colonia thanks to a game-winning 38-yard field goal from Franklin Wasserman, a former soccer player playing in his first varsity football game, as time expired in regulation. JSZ’s Jay Cook was in Colonia to capture this special moment: West Orange 26 Montclair 19 | Dorian Rawls 3 INTs, 2 TDs | Week 0 Highlights After a disappointing season in 2017, the West Orange Mountaineers felt they had something to prove this season and today was a good start. Though the Montclair shutout West Orange 16-0 in the first half, the Mountaineers came storming back in the second. Dorian Rawls had three interceptions and two touchdowns, while Shakhi Carson rushed for over 100 yards. Talk about a comeback. Check out full highlights of this exciting game now: North Brunswick 9 St. Joe-Metuchen 7 Aaron Ahr’s 33-yard field goal in the fourth quarter proved to be the game winner as the Raiders used outstanding defense to end a 19 game regular season win streak by the Falcons. Following a scoreless half, North Brunswick got on the board with an 11 yard TD catch by Chris Arnold. Saint Joe-Metuchen took the lead early in the fourth on a 2 yard TD run by Brian Reilly. After Ahr’s field goal, the Raiders defense buckled down to secure a signature win. Watch JSZ’s highlights and post-game reaction: Governor Livingston 21 AL Johnson 14 Jake Faulkner’s 91 yard TD catch from Dylan Dwyer with three minutes remaining was the difference in the Highlanders come from behind win in their home opener. Sebastian Iakouchevitch had a 29 carry, 186 yard, 2 TD performance in a losing effort. Trailing 7-0 at the half, Noah Truncale came up with two key turnovers in the third quarter as Governor Livingston took a 13-7 lead in the 4th quarter on a Jayson Schmidt 9-yard run. Iakouchevitch put the Crusaders in front 14-13 after an 18 yard gallop, but Governor Livingston’s huge play from Dwyer and Faulkner sealed a win for the home team. A game that started in favor of GC switched momentum thanks to some big plays from quarterback Andrew Paolini and fullback Jack Fusco. With a 10 point lead late in the fourth the Lancers made a huge stop to eventually put the game away. The Pirates were led by Rashad Raymond who finished the day with 238 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns. Three NJ teams to play at Phillies Citizens Bank Park
The Philadelphia Phillies Carpenter Cup features 16 high school baseball all-star teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. The first two rounds are played in downtown Philadelphia’s FDR Park. Monday’s quarterfinals saw three New Jersey teams reach the semifinals and the chance to play this Friday at Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Philadelphia Phillies. St. Augustine 1 Delbarton 0 – Non- Public A Final Cole Vanderslice threw a complete game 2-hit masterpiece to outduel Jack Leiter and give the Hermits a state championship after falling in the finals in the previous two years. Both pitchers were dominant against potent lineups. Leiter, who came into the game with 8 consecutive no-hit innings, was able to put up four more hitless frames before Kevin Easie had an infield single to lead off the 5th. Easie moved to third base following a pair of outs. A squeeze attempt failed, but with Easie off the bag at third the throw went into left field which resulted in the only run of the game. Watch the highlights of an outstanding game on Saturday night in Hamilton: Gloucester Catholic 10 DePaul 3 – Non- Public B Final The Rams raced out to a 4-0 first inning lead and built an 8-0 advantage as freshman Anthony Solometo pitched five shutout innings with 11 strikeouts to give Gloucester Catholic a second straight Non-Public “B” state championship. Luke Lesch hit a two-run HR in the first inning and had three RBI’s to lead Gloucester Catholic’s 10-hit attack. JSZ has the highlights and post-game reaction from Hamilton Veteran’s Park: Middlesex 3 Park Ridge 0 – NJSIAA Group 1 State Championship Middlesex captured their second consecutive Group 1 State Title with a 3-0 win over Park Ridge Saturday afternoon. It was clear from the beginning it would be a close game as both teams were unable to score in the first three innings. In the fourth the Blue Jays would score a run off an error on a bunt to lead Park Ridge 1-0. Ryan Vollmer would then send a 2 RBI shot to center to make it a three run game. Starting pitcher Kyle Nepton dominated on the mound, throwing a one hit shutout to lead Middlesex to it’s fifth State Championship. Watch the highlights now:

Toms River South – 6 Brick Twp – 5 Legendary Coach Ken Frank and The Toms River South Inidians found themselves in a rare position on Monday afternoon, winless through the first 3 games of 2018. Tied at 5 with Brick Township in the bottom of the 7th, South got a clutch double down the line in left by Jordan Erbe, followed up by an infield single off the bat of Shane Gibson to give the Indians a 6-5 walkoff win. Monmouth University commit TJ Scuderi continued his hot streak at the plate, going 2 for 3 in the win, while John Coppola hit a double & a triple in the loss for the Dragons. Middletown South 6 Colts Neck 3 The Eagles scored three runs in the 4th inning highlighted by a Robby Zega RBI double and Danny Minze pitched five strong innings allowing just one run to lead the Eagles to their second win of the season. Hunterdon Central 3 Wayne Hills 2 – Public A Semifinal Hunterdon Central trailed 1-0 in the second period; however, Alex Ahern tied the game up in the first, while team captain Scott Schnell gave the Red Devils the lead during the start of the third. The first goal of the night was score by Tsubasa Koninshi and things only got better from there. Woodbury 63 Paulsboro 50 Junior Aaron Estrada scored his 1000th career point as part of a 22 point effort to lead the Thundering Herd to a road win. Woodbury is now 6-1 with the victory. JSZ 2017 Football Plays of the Year
Special thanks from Jersey Sports Zone and an announcement We are overwhelmed and grateful to the incredible turnout for our 2017 JSZ Football Plays of the Year. With over 150,000 votes, we realize that many of our nominees were spreading the word around the state to watch our videos and vote for your favorite player. As a way of saying “thank you”, we are going to honor the top two vote getters in each category at the Jersey Sports Zone Football Banquet on December 7 at the APA Hotel in Woodbridge. Thank you again to everyone who voted and here are the winners of the JSZ Football Plays of the Year for 2017: TD Run: Eddie Morales, Howell and Bill Hackett, Trenton TD Pass Play: Michael DeSantis/Travis Thomas, South River and Cameron Carti/Andrew Perez, Seton Hall Prep Special Teams TD: Sean Spina, Ridge and Mack Byrne, Holmdel Defensive TD of the Year: Jordan Morant/Javontae Jean-Baptiste Bergen Catholic and Caleb Stokes, Ewing Sack of the Year: Anthony Corbin, Bergen Catholic and Nick Densieski, Saint John Vianney Stick of the Year: Liam Donohue, Rumson-Fair Haven and Markus Bagley, St. Peter’s Prep All of our Plays of the Year winners will be presented with JSZ Game Balls at our Football Banquet on December 7. We will be sending the information to coaches. Players and head coaches will be on our guest list. Anyone who voted for the Plays of the Year can come join us for our ceremony in Woodbridge. One Shore baseball team remains in hunt for state title
The Shore Conference went one for three in the state semifinals. SSZ has finals of Gloucester Catholic’s 9-4 win over Saint Rose at Monmouth University. Southern Regional fell to Hunterdon Central and Manasquan is on its way to the Group 2 state championship Gloucester Catholic 9 Saint Rose 4 The Rams broke a 4-4 tie with a five run fourth inning to advance to the Non-Public “B” state championship. Gloucester Catholic scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Saint Rose answered in the third inning with four runs. Brendan Hueth drove in a pair with a double down the third base line and Joe Volpe followed with a two run single, but the Rams loaded the bases and manufactured five runs to put the game away. An outstanding season for the Purple Roses comes to an end with a 24-4 record: Group 4 Semifinals Hunterdon Central 5 Southern Regional 2 Group 2 Semifinals Manasquan 2 Governor Livingston 1 Group 2 State Championship Manasquan vs. Whippany Park, Saturday in Toms River TBD
