Tristian Jeffries commits to Robert Morris
From Gill St. Bernard’s to St. Thomas Aquinas, Tristian Jeffries has proven himself against the best in New Jersey. Watch the highlight reel of the latest commit to the Robert Morris men’s basketball program. Tristian Jeffries is the latest from the Class of 2021 to commit to a Division I school. Jeffries has given a verbal commitment to play in Pennsylvania at Robert Morris: 100% COMMITTEDOnAMission❤️💙 pic.twitter.com/zKkl4wcb3H— Tristian Jeffries (@TristianJeffri2) August 21, 2020 Jeffries played his sophomore season at Gill St. Bernard’s and transferred to St. Thomas Aquinas as a junior helping the Trojans to a GMC title averaging 13.6 points per game in 15 games. It’s Selection Saturday! Watch JSZ’s Last Dance Baseball Tournament Selection Show
Jersey Sports Zone reveals the brackets for the Last Dance Baseball Tournament. We’ve got all the matchups as 222 teams try to be the last team standing in Trenton on July 30. In case you missed our live show, check out all the brackets plus interviews with players and coaches around the state. The spring sports season was taken away from New Jersey high school athletes but thanks to an extraordinary effort by the New Jersey high school baseball community, sports is coming back and Garden State diamond squads get an incredible summer tournament for One Last Dance. JSZ presents the Last Dance Baseball Tournament Selection Show. Just like the NCAA Baseball Tournament, we have all the brackets, matchups and interviews with coaches and players from around the state. Click on the video below to watch the reveal of the 222 teams that will play in 32 different regions. Jersey Sports Zone’s coverage of the Last Dance Baseball Tournament is made possible by Sterling National Bank. We will have coverage of all nine days of the Tournament starting on July 14 with pool play around the state About the Last Dance Tournament 222 teams, 32 regions. Every team is guaranteed three games in modified pool play. Regions with four teams will play round robin with the best record advancing to the 32-team single elimination tournament that begins in week two. Eight team regions will have modified pool play in the first two days. Teams with 2-0 records will meet up on the final day to determine the region winner. While all the teams are varsity baseball players, the tournament is not associated with the NJSIAA and school uniforms will not be worn. St. Joe’s (Mont.) 67 Bergen Catholic 61 | Bergen County Jamboree Final After suffering a pair of losses to Bergen Catholic in the regular season, St. Joe’s rebounded in a big way to score it’s first Bergen County Jamboree title since 2016. Senior guard Nazir Williams led all scorers with 26 points in the win while Daniel Lans followed right behind with 16 points. A holiday Monday provides another great slate of basketball across the state. Check back throughout the day as the highlights roll in! St. Augustine 53 Holy Spirit 46 | Boys The Hermits fell behind by by ten early but never panicked, as they beat the rival Spartans in a Cape-Atlantic League clash. Matt Delaney controlled the paint and scored a game-high 17 points. John Horner and Elmarko Jackson scored 14 points and 12 points respectively in the victory. Jack Cella went for a team-high 13 points for Spirit in the loss. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the highlight from Richland: Mainland 53 Cedar Creek 48 | Boys The Mustangs move into first place in the Cape-Atlantic League National Conference with a close win over the Pirates. Mainland never looked back after using an 11-0 run to close the first half, despite a late push by the Pirates in the fourth quarter. Luke Mazur scored a game-high 25 points to lead the way for Mainland. JSZ’s James Mooney has the highlights from Linwood: Marist 83 Matawan 30 | Boys Junior guard Keith Mency pumped in a career-best 22 points to fuel an overpowering win for Marist over Matawan from the Shore Conference. Mike Jackson finished with 15 points and Manny Toha notched 13 more in the win. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights from the NAACP Scholarship Showcase in Long Branch: Plainfield 65 Trenton 42 | Boys Plainfield (5-6) picked up its second win in a row with a 65-42 victory over Trenton (4-9). The Cardinals led by a slim margin of four at halftime before leading by as many as 20 in the fourth quarter. Tyejuan Taylor finished the afternoon with 16 points. Rumson-Fair Haven 51 St. Thomas Aquinas 35 | Girls Paige Slaven scored 24 points including nine of ten from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to give 14th ranked RFH a win over the #7 team in the latest state polls. St. Thomas Aquinas was playing without Georgetown commit Kelsey Ransom who was out with injury. The Trojans got 12 points from Emma Boslet, but scored just 10 points in the second half. Lucy Adams added 9 points and 16 rebounds in the win. St. Thomas Aquinas 74 Burlington Township 43 | Buc Classic Championship Quadry Adams and Jaquan Harris combined for 40 points to give the Trojans a convincing championship win at the Albert E. Martin Buc Classic at Red Bank Regional. Sophomore Harris had 19 points and senior Adams, a Wake Forest commit, earned MVP honors after a 21 point effort. St. Thomas Aquinas is now 5-1 with its lone loss coming to Bergen Catholic. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the highlights from Little Silver: Manasquan 78 Toms River North 63 | WOBM Christmas Classic Boys Championship Sophomore Ben Roy and senior Alex Galvan combined to score 52 points (26 points each) as Manasquan pulled away in the fourth quarter to bring home some hardware to close out 2019. Roy was named the tournament MVP while Galvan was selected to the tournament’s first team. Jerry Surrency scored a game-high 18 points in the victory. Trey Simmons added 13 points, while Jimmy Reilly chipped in with ten. Randy Butler scored ten points for Millville in the loss. Holmdel 66 Edison 38 | Huskies Holiday Classic After suffering a crushing one point loss in the Huskies Holiday Classic, Holmdel has picked up back to back wins to start the season 3-1. The Hornets defeated Edison 66-38 behind an unstoppable scoring attack led by Jack Giamanco. Giamanco finishing with 18 points helped push the deficit to 30 by the fourth quarter. It’s the holiday season in New Jersey and that means we’ve got holiday showcases all across the state. St. Peter’s Prep 56 Teaneck 27 | Boys | Jingle Bells Jubilee Sophomore sensation Mark Armstrong continued an exciting start to his season with a game-high 15 point performance against Teaneck in the annual holiday tournament. Ray Ford chipped in 13 points and William White added seven more. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights from Don Bosco Tech in Paterson: West Morris 76 St. Joe’s (Metuchen) 60 | J.P. Flynn Memorial Tournament West Morris improved to (3-0) with a 76-60 win over reigning Greater Middlesex Conference champion St. Joe’s (Metuchen). The Wolfpack trailed all but the opening moments of the first quarter before unleashing a suffocating offensive attack that pushed the lead to 20 by the third quarter. Christian Cevis finished with 17 points and 15 assists while Ryan Hillier had 32 points and five rebounds. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights: Lenape 53 Mainland 41 | Girls | Score at the Shore Semifinal The Indians used a balanced attack and plenty of timely outside shooting to beat the Mustangs and advance to the Score at the Shore championship game at Southern. Regan King paced Lenape with 11 points. Olivia Johnstone added ten points, while Dyonna Wess and Claire Zhang each chipped in with eight points. Oregon commit Kylee Watson poured in a game-high 26 points for Mainland in the loss. Madison Ruddy paced Aquinas with 14 points. St. Joseph’s commit Emma Boslet and Georgetown commit Kelsey Ransom each scored 12 points in the victory. Bergen Catholic gets neutral court win over St. Thomas Aquinas to reach 2-0
The Hoop Group Tip Off Showcase wrapped up on Sunday at the Dunn Center in Elizabeth. JSZ brings you highlights of Bergen Catholic’s 81-70 win over the school formerly known as Bishop Ahr Bergen Catholic 81 St. Thomas Aquinas 70 Will Richardson scored 29 points to lead the Crusaders to its second win of the young season. Julian Brown added 23 points and Notre Dame commit Matt Zona added 16 points and 15 rebounds in the win. The Crusaders trailed by one at the half but used a 22-point third quarter to get the victory. Antoine and Miller take home top honors at 2019 JSZ Hoop Zone Banquet
Nearly 90 high school basketball players around the state came to the Renaissance Hotel in Woodbridge to celebrate a fantastic 2018-19 season. Ranney’s Bryan Antoine is JSZ’s 2019 Mister Hoop Zone and Franklin’s Diamond Miller is Miss Hoop Zone 2019. Jersey Sports Zone thanks everyone for attending from every part of the state! All-Americans Antoine and Miller Steal the Show with Top Awards Villanova-commit Bryan Antoine and future Maryland Terrapin Diamond Miller decisively won the Mister Hoop Zone and Miss Hoop Zone awards, respectively. Both players take their newly-minted honors with them to Atlanta next week when they’ll both compete in the McDonald’s All-American Game. Bryan Antoine wins 2019 JSZ Mister Hoop Zone With a podium featuring three McDonald’s All-Americans, Ranney’s Bryan Antoine won the vote among coaches and statewide media. The Villanova signee closed out his high school career as the Shore Conference’s all-time leading scorer with over 2,500 points and teamed with fellow finalist Scottie Lewis to lead the Panthers first ever Tournament of Champions title. The McDonald’s All-American will represent New Jersey in the national showcase in Atlanta. Miller is signed with the University of Maryland. Bishop Ahr 62 Carteret 58 Bishop Ahr picked up its second straight win with a 62-58 overtime victory against rival Carteret. The Trojans never trailed once during the game, keeping a small lead at the end of the first three quarters. However, Carteret stayed alive in the closing minute of the fourth to leave us tied at 50 entering OT. Watch our preview of coverage then scroll down to watch all the action St. Joe’s (Mont.) 24 DePaul 17 After beginning 2018 1-1 St. Joe’s (Montvale) faced arguably their toughest opponent of the season in just Week 2 when they squared up with DePaul Catholic. The Green Knights got a rematch of last year’s Non Public Group 3 State Final in which they lost 10-7. This time around SJR’s defense was a turnover machine and with Junior quarterback Michael Alaimo under center and a late game interception from Jimmy Ciarlo Jr. they came out victorious against the number three ranked team in the state. Top 10 Girls Lacrosse Games: The 2018 high school girls LAX season saw sensational performances in the cage, incredible web gems, and goals of the year. Jersey Sports Zone captured the best of the best, and here are the Top 10 most viewed games on Jersey Sports Zone from last season in New Jersey high school girls LAX: #10. Ridgewood 12 Clearview 9 | Group 4 State Final After being eliminated in the first round of the Group 4 state playoffs following their Sectional Title win last season, No. 1 Ridgewood bounced back to win their third State Championship in four years against Clearview. The maroons jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks to Lillie Kloak who would wound up with an early hat trick in the first half, but Clearview countered to cut the lead 8-4 at the break. In the second half the Pioneers would keep it a close game, coming within 3 goals, but Ridgewood led by Marley Scala who scored 4 times would hold on to win 12-9. #9. Notre Dame 9 Princeton 8 Notre Dame coming off two impressive blowout victories to begin their 2018 year had a bit more trouble when they ran into Colonial Valley Conference rival Princeton. The Irish were locked into a head to head battle that saw multiple lead changes. Princeton took a late 2 goal lead and thanks to the heroics of Danielle Losier who ended the day with 5 goals, she tied it up and then helped Notre Dame take the lead in the final minutes to come away with the victory. #8. Allentown 7 Notre Dame 3 The match up between the Colonial Valley’s two Top 20 did not disappoint as the first half of Allentown and Notre Dame was a defensive battle that left us knotted up 1-1 at halftime. However, the tides shifted in favor of Allentown for the second half. Rutgers commit Marin Hartshorn led the Red Birds to a 7-3 victory and handed ND their first loss of the season thanks to a four goal performance. Your second look at this exciting rivalry has now arrived: #7. Notre Dame 13 Holy Cross 2 Notre Dame kicked off the season with an impressive 15-3 win over conference rival Hopewell Valley. The Irish rolled into their next meeting with Holy Cross Academy, coming off an upset to reigning Group 2 Champ Haddon Township with that same momentum. With great transitional play Notre Dame was unstoppable in the 13-2 victory over the Lancers. ND was led by second year transfer Danielle Loser, who put on a spectacular four goal performance. #6. Allentown 15 Hightstown 2 | MCT Quarterfinals Following a tough loss to No. 12 Bridgewater- Raritan, Allentown entered the Mercer County Tournament with some extra momentum. The second seed Red Birds coming off a 10 goal win in the opening round continued their success against No. 7 Hightstown. Freshman Alyssa Castellano was the difference maker, her 5 goal performance propelled Allentown to a 15-2 victory and a trip to the MCT Semifinals. #5. Bishop Ahr 11 vs Edison 8 Cassidy Veltre scored 4 goals in the 2nd half as The Trojans of Bishop Ahr were in prime position with a commanding 11-5 lead late in the 2nd half. Edison responded with 3 goals to make it a 11-8 game with just 1:30 remaining, but Bishop Ahr got a key save in net by Sydeny Samuelson and was able to hold off the Edison comeback for a 11-8 win on the road. #4. RBR 8 vs Shore Regional 7 | 1st Round SCT Meghan Murray scored the Bucs final two goals including the game-winner with :37 left in the game to give the Bucs a spot in the SCT quarterfinals. Murray finished with a hat-trick and freshman goalie Emily Dee made eight saves including three critical stops in the final five minutes. Shore was led by Ohio State signee Mary Kate George who had five goals. Red Bank Regional went on to face #1 seed Rumson-Fair Haven in the quarterfinals. #3. Moorestown 14 vs Ridgewood 9 | Tournament of Champions Kara Rahaim made 10 of her 16 saves in the second half and Ridgewood scored five straight goals in the second to reach the Tournament of Champions final. Red Bank Regional had a 4-3 lead at the half and took a 6-5 lead in the second half before RBC strung together three straight goals capped off by Pezzullo’s second tally of the game. Mackenzie Boyle led the RBC attack with three goals. #1. RFH 11 vs Manasquan 7 | SCT Girls Final Gill Curran scored three first-half goals and freshman Chase Boyle added a pair of scores in the second half to give RFH a remarkable sixth consecutive SCT title. Manasquan rallied from 5-2 down in the first half to tie the game at 6. Curran’s third goal of the game gave Rumson a 7-6 lead at the half. Nine-run 4th gives Bishop Ahr a spot in “A” South semis
Bishop Ahr 10 Red Bank Catholic 2 – Non-Public South “A” Quarterfinals The Trojans overcame a 2-0 deficit with a nine-run 4th inning to improve to 22-1 on the season. Bishop Ahr faces #2 ranked and undefeated Saint John Vianney next Tuesday in the semifinals. Bishop Ahr – 11 Edison – 8 Cassidy Veltre scored 4 goals in the 2nd half as The Trojans of Bishop Ahr were in prime position with a commanding 11-5 lead late in the 2nd half. Edison responded with 3 goals to make it a 11-8 game with just 1:30 remaining, but Bishop Ahr got a key save in net by Sydeny Samuelson and was able to hold off the Edison comeback for a 11-8 win on the road. Pingry 54 Blair – 52 Girls – Prep A Tournament The prep school season is coming to a close and for the teams in Prep A Tournament bracket the last school you want to match up with is 18-3 Blair Academy. The top seeded Buccaneers have three division 1 prospects in their starting line up: Onome Akinbode-James (Duke), Sydney Brown (Columbia) and Katie Douglas (Dartmouth). Blair was without Akinbode-James in the semifinal round against fourth seeded Pingry. Despite being an underdog Big Blue played like with no fear to begin the game to lead 14-8 at the end of the first. In the second Blair would begin to gain momentum thanks to remaining stars Brown and Douglas to pull within 25-22 but Pingry would go into halftime leading 32-24. Big Blue would continue their dominance in the second half and in the final quarter they relied on Kelsey Ransom to get the job done for them as she knocked down to clutch free throws with 2 seconds left to help them pull out a 54-52 upset. St. Benedict’s Prep – 64 Upper Room Christian (NY) – 53 Carlos Lemus was spectacular for Upper Room scoring 24 points, but Lester Quinones and the Gray Bee’s of St. Benedict’s Prep prevailed with a 64-53 win over the Long Island School. Quinones finished with 22 as St. Benedict’s improved to 19-0 on the season, holding onto their USA Today No. 3 National Ranking. Watch Highlights of St. Benedict’s Prep vs Upper Room below! Allentown 50 Steinert 47 The Colonial Valley Conference saw a great match up Friday night when 11-2 Allentown fresh off a loss to conference favorite Ewing took on 12-3 Steinert who was riding a nine game win streak. The Red Birds led for three quarters thanks to Senior Marin Hartshorn. However, in the fourth Steinert began to pick up their play and even gained the lead with five to go in regulation. Carteret 70 Bishop Ahr 62 Carteret dominated the first half of this one leading the Spartans 32-20 at half, but in the second half Bishop Ahr fought back. Late in the fourth the Spartans closed in on the Ramblers 56-55, but could not keep up after that. Carteret wins this one 70-62. Bishop Ahr 74 South Plainfield 66 The Bishop Ahr boys basketball team came into tonight at the top of the GMC – Blue division. Tonight they faced the South Plainfield Tigers, who on the flip side are currently winless in the blue division. However, the Tigers would give the Bishop Ahr a run for their money. In both the 2nd and 3rd quarter South Plainfield outscored the Trojans, but in the end it was Bishop Ahr who came out on top. Leading scorer for the Trojans was number 33, Quadry Adams, who scores 29 points tonight. Check out full highlights now: Metuchen 38 Carteret 53 Carteret and Metuchen are another GMC – Blue division matchup JSZ has for you tonight. In this game, the Ramblers took an early lead over the Metuchen Bulldogs and road that all the way through. Carteret defeated Metuchen 53-38 outscoring the Bulldogs every quarter. Their two key players tonight where Isiah Daniels-Porter and Jahlil Nix. Nix scored 19, while Porter scored 16. The Blue Devils were unstoppable on offense thanks to Highpoint University recruit Mya Grimes, who put on a scoring showcase with 24 points. Notre Dame 55 Nottingham-80 Fresh off their holiday tournament championship at the ESCIT, undefeated Nottingham was able to remain perfect against Colonial Valley Conference rival Notre Dame and scoring threat Cartier Bowman, who is averaging 28 points a game. Darell Johnson who scored 41 in the tournament repeated a similar performance as he grabbed 31 in the victory.
