9/3: Caldwell | Super Football Conference

Caldwell had a stellar 9-1 season in 2023 in the American Gold Division of the Super Football Conference. The Chiefs made it to the semifinal round of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 2 tournament but fell to Lakeland 33-28. The team loses their top passer in Louie Anemone, top rusher in Joey Marinello, and top receiver Jake Gruzas all whom graduated last year. Now, with a chip on their shoulder, Caldwell returns some key pieces to last years roster who will take lead the way for this team in 2024. Junior RB and LB Michael Mignone was not far behind Gruzas with 323 receiving yards. Mignone carries that experience into 2024. With an OL and DL led by seniors Aidan Hartney and Cole Bazerman, the Chiefs look to make a deeper playoff run this season.

9/3: Shabazz | Super Football Conference

From the outside, Naz Oliver’s first season leading the Bulldogs was a success – he guided the program to its third-ever sectional title. But the ultimate goal of winning a group state championship fell short a week later to the eventual Group 1 champions, Mountain Lakes. Turning the calendar to 2024, Shabazz brings a loaded roster into the season as they jump up to Group 2. Stanford commit Omari Gaines is one of the best defensive players in the whole state – he’ll be paired with star junior Zaiden McDonald on defense. Former Clifton QB Romelo Tables and former St. Peter’s Prep RB Jalen Cline are now in the black and yellow for their final high school seasons.

9/3: Phillipsburg | Big Central Conference

The Stateliners have only lost three games in the last two seasons and a heavily-productive group of seniors looks to leave their mark on this historic program. QB Jett Genovese, WR Matt Scerbo, OL/DL Ben Coury and a host of other Phillipsburg players want two things this fall – to win the school’s first-ever group state championship and to beat Easton (PA) in the annual Thanksgiving Day game. The Stateliners are now in Group 4 and own a two-game win streak over their Turkey Day rivals.

8/28: North Brunswick | Big Central Conference

North Brunswick had an impressive 8-1 record last season. Ultimately falling to Freehold Township in the quarterfinal round of the Central Jersey, Group 5 tournament by one, the Raiders enter this season hungry to go further in the playoffs. Luckily for North Brunswick they return som exceptional talent. Senior QB Al Trevelise threw for over 1,000 yards last season. On both sides of the ball, Jahir Dawud, a senior WR and DB had 68 tackles last season and is a key target on offense. Senior RB and LB Abdul Kargbo is known as the defensive anchor of this North Brunswick team. The Raiders are solid on both sides of the ball and their agressiveness and newfound culture when it comes to leadership can make them dangerous this upcoming season.

8/28: Hammonton | West Jersey Football League

While they may look a bit different from a season ago, expect to see the same hard-nosed brand of football that has come to be associated with the Blue Devils in 2024. Hammonton will lean on its experience in the trenches led by Princeton commit Anthony Liahknovich on both sides of the football. DeAndre Clemons and Josiah Miller form the one-two punch at running back and will play key roles at linebacker. Ethan Peterson anchors the secondary and will be a versatile option at receiver.

8/27: Montgomery | Big Central Conference

The Cougars had an impressive 8-1-1 season in 2023, but ultimately lost in the quarterfinal round of the Central Jersey, Group 4, Section 2 tournament to Sayreville. Offensively, Montgomery loses some key seniors in QB Mike Schmelzer who threw for almost 2,000 yards, RB Brady Post who ran for over 600 yards and WR Matthew D’Avino who racked up over 1,000 receiving yards. Most of Montgomery’s key returners come on defense. Senior LB’s Landen Dikker and Eamonn Kyler combined for 87 tackles last season. 8/26: Hillside | Big Central Conference

Usually, a 6-3 season with a playoff berth isn’t viewed as a rebuilding year. But that is the case in Hillside. Barris Grant’s team is ready to take off in 2024 and they’ll do it with NJ’s No. 1 ranked recruit Darren Ikinnagbon leading the way. Ikinnagbon, a 6-5, 250 pound defensive end, is a Georgia commit who is lifting the profile of Hillside football this fall. Rutgers commit Talibi Kaba is returning from injury and will play this fall and will help returning QB Zion Risher on offense.

8/26: Verona | Super Football Conference

Despite a 2-8 record last season, Verona returns an elite duo in Senior QB Connor DeMasi and Junior RB Bodie Maisano. DeMasi threw for over 2,000 yards last season and has the experience as a starting QB under his belt. Only a junior, Maisano led the team in rushing last season and still has two more years left to grow. The Hillbillies lose a 1,300 yard receiver in senior Zach Garmont who is now playing at Monmouth University. Verona has the returners and a new head coach to create a new identity in 2024. Manj Singh, a Montclair native who won a state championship in 1994 at Montclair High School takes over for Verona. Singh began his coaching career at NJ powerhouse Don Bosco Prep where he was the freshman defensive coordinator from 2016 to 2018, then the varsity and JV coach at Saint Joseph Regional High School from 2018 to 2020 and then the head coach in Glen Ridge in 2021 and 2022.

The Trojans were just three points and one possession away from upsetting DePaul Catholic in the Non-Public B semifinals last year. Chase Young rushed for 1,000+ yards and 16 touchdowns last year – he’ll return to the offense with senior QB Roman Blanks and junior wideouts Josiah Zayas and Anthony Perez. Two-way lineman Elijah Thomas will hold it down in the trenches for the championship hungry Trojans.
