He rushed for 1,901 yards on 229 carries and found the endzone 23 times. Allen is committed to Syracuse University. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the profile: Tommy Amankwaa, Hillsborough ATH Tommy Amankwaa was one of the most improved players in the entire state of New Jersey from his junior to senior seasons. Amankwaa was a true swiss army knife weapon for the Raiders. On offense, he tallied 99 total touches for 1,726 scrimmage yards and a combined 27 touchdowns as Hillsborough put together a perfect 13-0 season. His red-hot play this season earned him an offer from Rutgers – he verbally committed to the Scarlet Knights soon after. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the profile: Steve Angeli, Bergen Catholic QB Steve Angeli’s legacy at Bergen Catholic is undeniable after a historic season in Oradell. Angeli led the Crusaders to a perfect 12-0 season, a Non-Public A championship, and a top-five national ranking in 2021. The Crusaders’ signal-caller brought his game to a new level this season after throwing for 1,709 yards and 15 touchdowns in one of the toughest conferences in the entire country. Angeli, a natural leader and an Under Armour All-American, graduates high school in December and will be enrolled at Notre Dame after the New Year. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the profile: JoJo Bermudez, Cedar Creek WR A true speedster and the definition of a deep threat, JoJo Bermudez was a game-breaking talent for Cedar Creek in 2021. Bermudez hauled in an unsightly 91 catches for 1,662 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Pirates. Bermudez dominated defensive backfields all season long and helped Cedar Creek to a perfect 13-0 season. His blazing start to the regular season caught the eyes of coaches from Cincinnati, as he is now verbally committed to the Bearcats. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the profile: Alex Brown, Red Bank Catholic QB Alex Brown’s story throughout the 2021 postseason is well documented and will be talked about for years to come on Broad Street. Following the death of his mother, Brown delivered 12 touchdowns and no turnovers in the Caseys’ three-game playoff run to win the Non-Public B championship. The Bucknell commit ultimately threw for 1,817 yards and 22 touchdown passes with 519 rushing yards and 10 touchdown runs in his lone season at Red Bank Catholic. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the profile: Davison Igbinosun, Union ATH There are no arguments here: Davison Igbinosun is one of the most dynamic players in the entire state of New Jersey. Igbinosun was a hawking defensive back and a devastating weapon on offense for the Farmers in his final high school year. He was the top receiver and rusher for the Farmers’ offense and notched 74 tackles and three interceptions on defense. Union’s season had an unceremonious ending, but that doesn’t take away from the impact he had in a 9-2 season in Union County. Q’yaier Price, DePaul Catholic DE One of the state’s most unblockable defensive forces finished off a senior season with some eye-popping numbers. Price compiled 35.5 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks for the 9-3 Spartans in 2021. He led the way for a defense that didn’t allow a touchdown for a five-game stretch at the beginning of the season and who eventually made it to the Non-Public B title game. Price flipped commitments from Syracuse to Rutgers after emerging as one of New Jersey’s top edge defender talents during the 2021 season. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the profile: 2021 JSZ Football Plays of the Year The top plays captured by JSZ cameras were on display each week for the Top Play Belt. Our year-end plays of the year featured six winners that went head to head for the final Top Play Belt of the 2021 season:

JSZ’s Summer Recap Series of the 2020-2021 scholastic season starts with football. “Unofficial” champions were crowned, crossover games between unfamiliar opponents happened and wild finishes were a thing of the norm. Here are the Top 10 football games of the 2020 season! No. 10 : Mater Dei’s Trick Play Hits Again, This Time Taking out RFH on Late Touchdown Mater Dei Prep always seems to have a thing for theatrics. The Seraphs dug into their successful bag of tricks and pulled out this hook-and-ladder touchdown to blow past Rumson-Fair Haven late and secure a 25-19 win on Halloween. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis had the highlights: No. 9: Somerville hammers Woodbridge in High Scoring Showdown Somerville and Woodbridge both employed talented running backs and explosive offenses in 2020. These two juggernauts collided on Nov. 13 and the Pioneers – led by JSZ Player of the Year finalist Cookie Desiderio – toppled Ali Lee Jr. and his Woodbridge Barrons to the tune of 39-26. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez was on the call: No. 8: No Shortage of Drama in St. Augustine/Williamstown Thriller After a Turner Inge touchdown run in overtime, the Braves were staring down a second overtime period or the win on a two-point conversion. St. Augustine, however, wasn’t planning on going home with a tally in the loss column. The Hermits buckled down and made a goal line stop to secure one of their four wins from a tumultuous 2020 season. JSZ’s Mike Frankel had the highlights from October 30: No. 7: Bergen Catholic Spoils Party, Tops St. Peter’s Prep in Rich Hansen’s Final Game What a fitting way it was to end the 2020 season. St. Peter’s Prep looked to send longtime coach Rich Hansen out with a win in his final game. Bergen Catholic was playing to secure the unofficial No. 1 statewide ranking with a victory. A full dose of Princeton-commit Ryan Butler late in this game pushed the result into Bergen Catholic’s favor, with a close call at the end in a 22-15 final. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis and Jay Cook teamed up to tell this story on Nov. 28: No. 6: Lenape Downs Rival Cherokee in OT Playoff Thriller For anyone who think special teams doesn’t matter at the high school level – watch this game. Lenape kicker Dylan Shank’s 48-yard field goal in overtime was the deciding factor in a South Jersey Pod A semifinal game between two longtime rivals. JSZ’s Mike Frankel had the highlights on Nov. 15: No. 5: Becton’s Perfect Season Realized with First NJIC Title Win Only one conference played a true, official championship in 2020. The Becton Wildcats ran the table with a 6-0 record and captured the first NJIC championship in program history with a commanding 41-12 win over Waldwick/Midland Park in the title game on Nov. 20. JSZ’s Jay Cook was on the call: No. 4: Don Bosco Downs Rival Bergen Catholic on Last Play Touchdown Throw out the records when Don Bosco and Bergen Catholic take the field because these two rivals always play their best games when they’re on the field together. The Crusaders held a commanding lead going into halftime, but senior QB Jake Robbins turned it up late and brought the Ironmen back in for the win in the fourth quarter. A last-second touchdown pass to Ethan Acevedo and a game-winning extra point from Thomas Sawicki sealed a victory for the ages. JSZ’s Jay Cook had the highlights from this Nov. 14 showdown: No. 3: Wall’s Defense, Last Stand Cement Unofficial Shore Conference Championship Wall proved to be not only the best team in the Shore Conference in 2020, but was certainly among the state’s elite when the season ultimately came to a close. The Crimson Knights won their “unofficial” Shore Conference championship on Nov. 20 when a goal line stand preserved an 18-15 win. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis was on the call: No. 2: Holy Spirit Does It’s Thing, Claims Unofficial South Jersey Championship Holy Spirit’s win in the unofficial South Jersey championship was hardly a surprise. The Spartans were powered by JSZ Player of the Year finalist Patrick “Cheeks” Smith all year long and a magical ride concluded on their home field on Nov. 20. Smith rushed for 232 yards and two scores, closing out Holy Spirit’s perfect 8-0 season with a 21-7 victory over Lenape. JSZ’s Mike Frankel was on the call: No. 1: Seton Hall Prep Stuns Undefeated St. Peter’s Prep in OT Seton Hall Prep has certainly made it clear over the years that you can never count them out of any game. The last case? This unforgettable, overtime win over previously-undefeated St. Peter’s Prep on Nov. 23. Myles Thomason scored a game-tying touchdown in overtime and special teams ace Nick Conforti buried the game-winning extra point to cap off one of the most wild games of the 2020 season. JSZ’s Jay Cook was on the highlights:

Inge Commits to Villanova
Turner Inge has been toting the rock for Williamstown since his sophomore season, churning out tough yards and scoring touchdowns in bunches for the Braves. During a shortened junior campaign, Inge rushed for over 500 yards and nine TDs. The rising senior announced his college decision on Tuesday, making a verbal commitment to the Villanova Wildcats. The Somerville bruiser exceeded every and all exception in this wild season with 1,569 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns on only 152 carries. That comes out to 10.3 yards every single time Desiderio took a handoff. You know what makes those numbers so impressive? It’s the fact that Desiderio did it in only seven games and that he surpassed every single benchmark he previously set in his junior season. Desiderio becomes the second player in Somerville history to be nominated for the award (Jalahn Dabney, 2018.) The recognition is well-deserved. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the feature: Audric Estime, St. Joe’s (Mont.) RB Audric Estime put in an offseason for the ages to deliver one of the most dominant single season efforts anyone has ever seen in North Jersey. While playing in arguably one of the toughest divisions in the entire country, the St. Joe’s (Mont.) product ran roughshod over the competition for 190 carries, 1,857 yards and 22 touchdowns. All of those were career highs in only eight games played. The Michigan State commit was also the only player in the state to account for 2,000 scrimmage yards and finished 2020 with a total 2,042 yards and 24 touchdowns. The Big 10 better be ready for what’s coming. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story: Casey Larkin, Wall ATH Both the soul and heartbeat of Wall’s undefeated 2020 team is, without question, Casey Larkin. A starter on both sides of the ball for the Crimson Knights, Larkin shined in every game he played. At running back, he rushed for 870 yards and 13 touchdowns on only 97 carries. At defensive back, Larkin anchored the Crimson Knights defense with 32 tackles, five pass defenses and a fumble recovery. Wall won the unofficial Shore Conference championship this season and finished the year 7-0. Larkin delivered two standout performances in the semifinal and finals. Some in New Jersey consider Wall to be the state’s top-ranked team – if they indeed are, then Larkin had a major say in that decision. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the story: Patrick “Cheeks” Smith, Holy Spirit RB If you ask any high school football fanatic in South Jersey who the area’s top player was this season, the answer would be short and quick: Cheeks. Patrick Smith, the Holy Spirit standout, was an absolute force to be reckoned with every time the rock was in his hands. Smith concluded an unforgettable 2020 campaign with 1,719 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on a workhorse-like 221 carries this season. Holy Spirit ended the season at 8-0 after becoming the unofficial South Jersey champions with a 21-7 win over Lenape in the WJFL Bracket A Final. Smith’s incredible top-end speed and vision helped drive the Spartans to the upper echelon on New Jersey high school football in a crazy season. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the feature: JSZ Plays of the Year The JSZ Football Plays of the Year will wrap up on December 21st with the six winners of each category vying for the top overall play of the year. We’ll interview the winner on December 23rd! A Night and a Season Cut Short; Williamstown vs. Ocean City Game Stopped at Halftime
It was an ending suitable for 2020, but that didn’t make it any easier to accept for the Braves and the Red Raiders. Williamstown and Ocean City came in as two of the top teams in South Jersey. The Braves raced out to a 28-6 halftime lead, before the news came down. A Williamstown player, not present at the game, had tested positive for COVID-19, and the game would have to be abandoned. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the story from Ocean City: JSZ would also like to send its condolences to the family and friends of former Ocean City student-athlete Anthony Kenny. The OCHS football family is crushed to learn that 2017 grad and football alum Anthony Kenny was killed in a car accident tonight. Ant was an all-conference player and a better person – always smiling, laughing, lighting up the room. A horrible end to an already-bizarre evening. pic.twitter.com/MP73DAxobh— Ocean City High School Football (@OCHS_Football) November 26, 2020

Football Early Signing Day has dozens of JSZ All-Zoners sign to play college football
It used to be that the first Wednesday in February was the biggest day in the high school football recruiting cycle, but the December early signing day has become even more important to college football programs. Jersey Sports Zone has full coverage of athletes around New Jersey making their college decisions official. We’ll continue to update this page throughout the day. Don Bosco Prep Kyle Monangai held over 25 D-1 offers but was longing for more attention from Power 5 programs. Monangai, a 2019 JSZ Zoneman Finalist, caught the eye of Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano and has announced his commitment to play with the Scarlet Knights in the Big 10. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story from Ramsey: Red Bank Catholic The Caseys have a tradition of turning out college football talent and it continues with Kevin Bauman signing at Notre Dame and Charlie Gordinier heading to the ACC and the Boston College Eagles: Paramus Catholic Devin Willock followed his gut. After decommitting from Penn State last week, Willock quickly made the decision to head to the SEC and sign his NLI with the University of Georgia with family as the deciding factor. Willock is one of three N.J. players to commit to SEC programs so far this season. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story from Paramus Catholic: Ocean Township Trebor Pena was voted Shore Conference Player of the Year by multiple media outlets and the Ocean Township running back had the numbers to back it up with over 1500 yards on the ground and 19 TD’s. Pena was an original commit to Temple but made the switch in November to Syracuse University. He’s ready to make the transition from running back to slot receiver. Watch a great signing day ceremony from Ocean Township High: Cedar Creek Malachi “Max” Melton made a verbal commitment to Purdue over the summer. But after a coaching change at Rutgers, Melton flipped to the Scarlet Knights. Melton’s older brother Bo will be a senior wide receiver for Rutgers next fall. In fact both of their parents were athletes for the Scarlet Knights as well. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the story from Egg Harbor City: Williamstown Aaron Lewis led Williamstown to back-to-back South Jersey Group 5 titles. Now Lewis is heading to Michigan, to try and help the Wolverines capture a Big Ten title. Meanwhile, fellow Braves seniors Jon Wood and Quinn Hart will remain teammates at the next level, as both sign with Sacred Heart. In the third quarter the Farmers would get a stop that eventually led to 14 unanswered points and proved to be a deciding factor entering the fourth quarter. Union quarterback Andrew Sanborn finished with 265 passing yards and four touchdowns while Bridgewater-Raritan quarterback Alex Fromberg had 274 yards and four touchdowns as well. Watch Tuesday 4.9 JSZ Baseball Highlights
Bad weather certainly had no effect on NJ’s pitchers Tuesday afternoon. JSZ was on hand for four games and captured some thrilling performances on the hill, including Howell throwing a combined 19 strikeout no-hitter and Mike Walter and Jacob Denner throwing complete games with 11 and 9 strikeout performances, respectively. Enjoy all the highlights! Bernard was amazing throwing six innings with just two walks and a staggering 17 strikeouts. The senior left hander was at 106 pitches through six innings and with the NJSIAA pitch limit at 110, there was no chance of going the distance for the no-hitter. Bearse struck out two more to seal the no-hitter. Feretic completed his performance by striking out the last three batters to secure the W. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights: Sponsor! He is one of five New Jersey players selected to play in the 2019 All-American Bowl and is committed to play for Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide. Alfano dominated his competition in the Greater Middlesex Conference with 79 tackles and 10 sacks this season, along with a staggering 28 tackles for losses. JSZ’s Jay Cook gives you the inside-look at what makes Alfano such a highly-touted prospect: Jada Byers, St. Joseph (Hamm.) Running Back Byers was as electric as they come in the Garden State during his junior campaign. He looked like he was shot out of a cannon with the ball in his hands, rushing for 1,741 yards and 29 touchdowns on the season, all while helping power his St. Joe’s Wildcats to yet another Non-Public Group 2 championship. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez takes you down to Hammonton for a behind-the-scenes look at South Jersey’s most electrifying runner: Jalahn Dabney, Somerville Quarterback Dabney took over the starting quarterback job in Somerville at the end of the 2017 season and showcased his dynamic playmaking ability well throughout 2018. He compiled 3,444 yards from scrimmage this season and reached the end-zone 56 times to lead one of New Jersey’s most dangerous offenses. JSZ’s Courtney DuPont tells us what makes this dual-threat quarterback tick: Nick Kargman, Woodrow Wilson Quarterback Kargman will graduate from Woodrow Wilson with plenty of state records compiled during his senior season. The decorated South Jersey passer broke the state record single season passing mark with 3,963 yards and his 41 passing scores rank atop the state lists, as well. But what’s even more impressive is Kargman’s character off the field, as it’s made him an important part of the Woodrow Wilson community. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez tells us what makes Kargman so special: Rahmir Johnson, Bergen Catholic Running Back Johnson became the first Bergen Catholic rusher to break the 1,000-yard mark since 2008, a true testament to the level of competition that the Crusaders face on a week-to-week basis. After teammate Josh McKenzie went down with a torn ACL, Johnson assumed the full-time starting role and showcased his elite speed and craftiness all season long. He closed 2018 with 1,334 yards and 11 rushing scores. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story about this humble teammate and Nebraska commit: Steve Lubischer, Red Bank Catholic Quarterback Intelligence and athleticism is the blend of characteristics that has made Lubischer one of New Jersey’s most talented signal callers. At Red Bank Catholic, Lubischer blossomed into a premier dual-threat passer who had the ability to break the game on any down. JSZ’s chief operating officer Rich Chrampanis followed Lubischer’s trajectory all season long and tells us why this Boston College commit is so special: Other Top Vote-Getters Only the top-six vote-getters are on our Zoneman podium, but there were other plenty of players around the Garden State who had great seasons and garnered votes from coaches and media around the state. Those players were: 7th Place: Taquan Roberson, DePaul Catholic quarterback: Roberson, a Penn State commit, closed out his senior season in masterful fashion for the Spartans. He threw 29 touchdowns for 2,432 yards and will go down as one of the most decorated quarterbacks to play in New Jersey. 8th Place: Jalen Berger, Don Bosco Prep running back: Berger led one of New Jersey’s most talented backfields at Don Bosco Prep by displaying elite patience and explosiveness. Only a junior, he holds offers from top-tier Power 5 college football programs and has plenty more in the tank for his senior year. 9th Place: Juwon Jackson, Piscataway running back: Jackson was a main reason why Piscataway reached a 13-0 record and won both a sectional title and a newly-minted “Bowl Game” at MetLife Stadium. He rushed for 1,898 yards and 31 touchdowns on the season. 10th Place: Ronnie Hickman, DePaul Catholic wide receiver/defensive back: Hickman was arguably the most dangerous two-way player in New Jersey. Committed to Ohio State, Hickman was one of five New Jersey football players selected to the 2019 All-American Bowl. His senior season was unfortunately cut short due to a torn ACL late in the year. Josh Henderson wins JSZ 2018 Prep Player of the Year Hun running back and University of North Carolina commit Josh Henderson was named JSZ’s 2018 Prep Player of the Year. Makai Mickens had a 21 yard TD run, an interception and a blocked extra point in overtime. Long Branch played from behind the entire game, scoring late in the first half to draw even 7-7 and then scoring with under four minutes to go on a Jermaine Corbett 3 yard TD run to tie the game at 14 and force overtime. The Green Wave got the ball first in OT and La’Qym Morris scored from six yards out, but Mickens was able to block the extra point.
