Triton snaps a six-game losing streak to rival Highland
Triton 61 Highland 52 | Boys The Mustangs had their mojo working on Friday night, topping the Tartans to snap a six-game losing streak in this Tri-County Conference rivalry. Bobby Beecher hit four three-pointers on his way to a game-high 29 points in the win. Jarett White had a busy night, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for Triton (2-3). Jaeden O’Neal scored a game-high 29 points in the loss for a shorthanded Highland (1-4), which was without two starters for this game. It’s the final weekend of the regular season, and JSZ braves the elements to bring you action from all over the state! Rutherford 27 Park Ridge 20 | NJIC Championship A three touchdown performance from Pat Cerulli and a catch-of-the-year candidate from Doug Russell highlighted the Bulldogs’ second NJIC championship crown on their home turf at Tryon Field. Rutherford (7-1) has now won seven consecutive games and heads into the postseason with a head full of steam. Park Ridge (7-1) was paced by a career-best performance from Matthew Manning, who notched 195 rushing yards and three scores. St. Augustine 35 Holy Spirit 21 The Hermits close out the regular season by knocking off rival Holy Spirit and head into the postseason on an eight-game winning streak. Princeton-commit Nasir Hill turned in a phenomenal all-around performance, scoring three touchdowns, and added a pair of interceptions in the win. Senior Kanye Udoh rushed for a pair of touchdowns for St. Augustine (8-1). Senior Trevor Cohen scored a pair of touchdowns in the loss for Holy Spirit. Justin Doughty and Kenny Smith also rushed for scores, while the Blue Devils D pitched a shutout. Triton falls to (7-3), but both teams should be playoff-bound next week. Tri-Cape Wins its First Phillies Carpenter Cup Title
Tri-Cape knocks off Mercer County in an all-New Jersey Carpenter Cup final in our OceanFirst Bank Game of the Week! Tri-Cape 5 Mercer County 3 The best of New Jersey baseball was on full display in the finals of the 2021 Phillies Carpenter Cup. Tri-Cape (players from the Tri-County Conference and Cape-Atlantic League) made it a day to remember, defeating Mercer County to win its first Carpenter Cup championship in tournament history. Highland’s Adam Aquilino capped off a four-run, two-out rally in the third inning with a two-RBI single. Hammonton’s Jared Beebe, Holy Spirit’s Trevor Cohen, and Ocean City’s Gannon Brady each knocked in a run in the win. Hun’s Ben Petrone hit a solo home run in the loss for Mercer County. Woodstown’s Chase Swain was named the tournament’s most valuable player. It’s Selection Saturday! Watch JSZ’s Last Dance Baseball Tournament Selection Show
Jersey Sports Zone reveals the brackets for the Last Dance Baseball Tournament. We’ve got all the matchups as 222 teams try to be the last team standing in Trenton on July 30. In case you missed our live show, check out all the brackets plus interviews with players and coaches around the state. The spring sports season was taken away from New Jersey high school athletes but thanks to an extraordinary effort by the New Jersey high school baseball community, sports is coming back and Garden State diamond squads get an incredible summer tournament for One Last Dance. JSZ presents the Last Dance Baseball Tournament Selection Show. Just like the NCAA Baseball Tournament, we have all the brackets, matchups and interviews with coaches and players from around the state. Click on the video below to watch the reveal of the 222 teams that will play in 32 different regions. Jersey Sports Zone’s coverage of the Last Dance Baseball Tournament is made possible by Sterling National Bank. We will have coverage of all nine days of the Tournament starting on July 14 with pool play around the state About the Last Dance Tournament 222 teams, 32 regions. Every team is guaranteed three games in modified pool play. Regions with four teams will play round robin with the best record advancing to the 32-team single elimination tournament that begins in week two. Eight team regions will have modified pool play in the first two days. Teams with 2-0 records will meet up on the final day to determine the region winner. While all the teams are varsity baseball players, the tournament is not associated with the NJSIAA and school uniforms will not be worn. Sectional champions squared off on Thursday night for the right to advance to Sunday’s state finals at Kean University. Check back throughout the night for all of the highlights! Clifton 3 Elizabeth 2 (2OT) | Group 4 Semifinal This head-to-head matchup of two undefeated teams delivered one of the most wild, roller-coaster games there’s been in 2019. After battling to a 2-2 score late in the second half, a fight broke out with :01 remaining in regulation. Each team had a player ejected after red cards were doled out. Clifton, however, battled through the adversity and came out with the win courtesy of a Danny Tobon golden goal (96′). The Mustangs will face Hunterdon Central in the Group 4 title game Sunday afternoon. Hunterdon Central 2 Toms River North 1 | Group 4 Semifinal The Red Devils fell behind 1-0 early before storming back to take down the Mariners. Ali Baish opened the scoring for Toms River North, before Central’s Brady Mullins tied the game before halftime. Marc Costa gave the Red Devils the lead early in the second half, and they hung on for the victory. Hunterdon Central will face Clifton in the Group 4 state final on Sunday at 12:30. The Crimson Knights girls’ soccer team reached Kean University on a golden goal one day earlier and now the boys are heading to Union as well. Wall picks up its 16th shutout of the season. Millburn will look to take home their first title since 2012 after falling to Ocean Township in the big game last season. Clifton 1 Kearny 0 | North 1 Group 4 Semifinal This battle between two North Jersey county champions didn’t disappoint Tuesday as Clifton edged out Kearny. Amer Lukovic’s header in the second half proved to be the game winner in a tight, 80-minute matchup. The Mustangs are set to face No. 1 seed Ridgewood in the sectional final Friday. Christian Brothers 2 Notre Dame 1 | South Non-Public A Semifinal (2) Christian Brothers Academy defeated (3) Notre Dame 2-1 to advance to the South Non-Public A Tournament Final. Despite the Irish scoring in the first ten minutes CBA countered with goals from Brett Seig and Connor Anderko to lead 2-1 at halftime. Notre Dame continued to come close in the second act but was unable to connect on any shots thanks to goalie AJ Pinto who would finish with five saves. Triton 1 Mainland 0 (2OT) | South Group 3 Semifinal Sophomore Maxwell Hawk’s double-overtime golden goal sends Triton to the South Group 3 Final. Ocean Township 0 Lawrence 0 (Spartans win 5-4 in Pks) | Central Group 3 Semifinal Isaac Greenspan made a save in the 6th round of PK’s setting the stage for Eli Brandimarte to make his second penalty of the round and give the Spartans a spot in the sectional championship for a third straight year. JSZ has another full slate of soccer for you. We’ve got four games from around New Jersey including more from the Shore Conference Tournament plus a golden goal from the Delsea girls! Middletown South 4 Barnegat 0 – Boys The Eagles scored three second-half goals to cruise into the second round of the Shore Conference Tournament. Aaron Oliveira gave Midd. South a 1-0 lead at the half. Matt Glynn, Danny Minze and Alex Sigua all found the net in the second. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the highlights from Middletown: Delsea 1 Triton 0 (2OT) – Girls Ava Szwed scored a golden goal in double overtime to lift the Crusaders over the Mustangs. Old Bridge 1 Monroe 0 – Girls The last time Monroe and Old Bridge faced off 100 minutes led to a 0-0 tie between the two bitter Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division rivals. Following a scoreless first half Jillian Orzol would score the game’s only goal in the 68’ to put the Knights on a three game win streak as Old Bridge improves to 9-3-3. It was a combination of hot goalkeeper play and struggles inside the 18, but Steinert and Hillsborough both missed on big chances to notch the scoreless tie. The two goalies, Trevor Giordano and Daniel Guerrero Niteo, combined for 21 saves. This was a non-tournament game, thus no trip to penalty kicks to decide a winner. Our cameras were on hand for a pair of games in the Tri-County Conference, as Glassboro took on Pitman, and Williamstown squared off against Triton. Glassboro 3 Pitman 2 (OT) The defending Group 1 state champion Bulldogs edged the Panthers thanks to a golden goal from Gorkem Ozdemir. Ozdemir also scored in regulation for Glassboro, along with Aaron Harrison. Jonny Zubert scored both goals for Pitman in the loss. R.J. Johnson kept the Panthers in the game, making 14 saves. The Bulldogs remain undefeated with the victory at (5-0-2). JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the highlights and reaction from Glassboro: Williamstown 1 Triton 0 Williamstown shut out Triton 1-0 in Tri-County Conference play. The Braves found themselves out-shot and out-chanced in the game but a stingy defensive performance, and a couple key saves from goalkeeper Gunnar Hoffman, helped preserve the road win. Senior Cole McNellis scored the lone goal in the game for Williamstown. The Braves improve to 3-2-1 on the year while the Mustangs drop to 5-2. The second week of the season begins with some fantastic match-ups all over the state. Check back throughout the night for all of the highlights! Bergen Catholic 3 Don Bosco Prep 2 (2OT) After overcoming a 2-0 deficit and a red card to put them a man down, Bergen Catholic’s Nick Shannon delivered one of the biggest goals of the early 2019 season with a Golden Goal to beat Don Bosco Prep in double overtime. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the highlights from this key Tri-County Conference rivalry game: CBA 3 Manalapan 1 After a two day 15 inning marathon won by the Braves, CBA turned around and handed Manalapan its first loss of the season thanks to a 2-hit masterpiece courtesy of Joe Escandon. Manalapan used a hit and an error to set up a sacrifice fly to strike in the top of the first, but Escandon put up six straight scoreless frames walking just two batters and striking out six. The first round of the playoffs come to a close with Saturday action around the state. JSZ brings you more post-season highlights including Edison’s first playoff win in 18 years, a revenge win for the Brick Memorial Mustangs plus emphatic shutouts from Seton Hall Prep and Montclair along with a dominating performance from Piscataway. Watch our Saturday Week 9 Preview and then scroll down to watch nine games of action from around New Jersey: Randolph 34 Colonia 27 – North 2 Group 4 First Round Anthony Sofia’s 12-yard TD run with 3:18 to go in the 4th quarter broke a 27-27 tie as the 2nd seeded Rams held off an upset bid from the Patriots. Colonia stormed back from a 27-13 halftime deficit to tie the game at 27 in the 4th quarter. Randolph caused a fumble on defense and then avoided a turnover with a fumble recovery on offense to set the stage for Sofia’s game winning run. JSZ has all the exciting moments from this Saturday night thirller: Seton Hall Prep 17 Paramus Catholic 0 – Non-Public Group 4 First Round For the first time in eight seasons Seton Hall Prep won a playoff game. With just a field goal after one quarter of football quarterback Aidan Gilman would link up with Matt Colantuono for a touchdown to lead 10-0 at halftime. Gilman would throw another touchdown in the fourth quarter to lead the Pirates to a 17-0 victory in the first round of the Non Public Group 4 playoffs. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights: Edison 14 South Brunswick 7 – Central Jersey Group 5 First Round Tyler Montford’s 37-yard touchdown with under three minutes to go in the 4th quarter proved to be the difference as Edison’s defense produced three interceptions and two goal-line stands to give the Eagles their first playoff win since 2000. Noah Stansbury had an 8-yard TD catch and his seventh interception of the season in the win. The 6th seed travels to #2 North Brunswick this Friday night in the semifinals. JSZ has the highlights and post-game reaction from the upset: Montclair 35 West Orange 0 – North 1 Group 5 First Round After falling to West Orange to open the 2018 season, Montclair was able to deal a bit of revenge Saturday as the Mounties dominated from sideline to sideline in a 35-0 shutout against the Mountaineers. Quarterback Charles Murphy accounted for 208 yards and three total touchdowns while the Montclair defense allowed only 75 yards of offense on the afternoon. JSZ’s Jay Cook has all the highlights from the win: Piscataway 42 Bridgewater-Raritan 0 – North 2 Group 5 First Round Juwon Jackson ran for 100 yards and two TD’s in just one half of action and the Chiefs cranked out 367 yards of offense in one half to cruise into the North 2 Group 5 semifinals and a home game against Ridge in the semifinals. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the highlights: Manasquan 40 Delaware Valley 21 – Central Jersey Group 2 First Round Canyon Birch ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns as the Warriors scored 40 straight points after falling behind 6-0 in the first quarter. The Warriors will host Cinnaminson in the Central Jersey Group 2 semifinals next Saturday. JSZ has the highlights from Manasquan’s offensive explosion: Penns Grove 40 Woodstown 6 – South Jersey Group 1 First Round Tyreke Brown, Penns Grove’s Swiss-army knife athlete, accounted for over 100 yards and a trio of scores on the day as Penns Grove won it’s 10th straight game.
