Jersey Sports Zone reveals the brackets for the Last Dance Baseball Tournament. We’ve got all the matchups as 222 teams try to be the last team standing in Trenton on July 30. In case you missed our live show, check out all the brackets plus interviews with players and coaches around the state. The spring sports season was taken away from New Jersey high school athletes but thanks to an extraordinary effort by the New Jersey high school baseball community, sports is coming back and Garden State diamond squads get an incredible summer tournament for One Last Dance. JSZ presents the Last Dance Baseball Tournament Selection Show. Just like the NCAA Baseball Tournament, we have all the brackets, matchups and interviews with coaches and players from around the state. Click on the video below to watch the reveal of the 222 teams that will play in 32 different regions. Jersey Sports Zone’s coverage of the Last Dance Baseball Tournament is made possible by Sterling National Bank. We will have coverage of all nine days of the Tournament starting on July 14 with pool play around the state About the Last Dance Tournament 222 teams, 32 regions. Every team is guaranteed three games in modified pool play. Regions with four teams will play round robin with the best record advancing to the 32-team single elimination tournament that begins in week two. Eight team regions will have modified pool play in the first two days. Teams with 2-0 records will meet up on the final day to determine the region winner. While all the teams are varsity baseball players, the tournament is not associated with the NJSIAA and school uniforms will not be worn. Carteret Boys hoops gives Rahway first loss of 2020
Carteret 56 Rahway 53 Carteret kicked off 2020 by handing Rahway their first loss of the season to improve to 4-2. The Ramblers kept a slim single digit lead throughout the night until the fourth quarter when Rahway went ahead 50-49. Holiday hoops week continues with action all around the state. Check back throughout the day for all of the highlights! Rahway 43 Westfield 42 | Kowal Tournament Final Amari Thompson knocked down a three-pointer late in the game to help the host school Indians rally from seven points down in the final three minutes to win the Butch Kowal Tournament. Thompson’s triple gave Rahway a 41-40 lead. After Westfield took the lead in the final minute, Ernest Carter sank two free throws and Rahway came up with a stop to earn the tournament title. Delran 50 Collingswood 40 | Collingswood Holiday Tournament Final Tommy Murphy scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Bears to the Collingswood Holiday Tournament title. Glen Morrison added 12 points, while Ahmed Johnson scored 10 in the victory. Mekhi Bassett led the Panthers with 16 points in the loss. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the highlights from Collingswood: Trenton Catholic 64 Franklin 42 – Girls Basketball In one of the year’s must-see girls basketball games, Trenton Catholic defeated reigning back-to-back Tournament of Champions winner Franklin 64-42. The Lady Mikes, led by University of Central Florida commit Maniya Custis and West Virginia University bound Giana Hernandez-Boulden, ended the first quarter with a 15-13 lead before going up by as many as 20. Custis had 10 points while Hernandez-Boulden finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Sectional champions squared off on Thursday night for the right to advance to Sunday’s state finals at Kean University. Check back throughout the night for all of the highlights! Clifton 3 Elizabeth 2 (2OT) | Group 4 Semifinal This head-to-head matchup of two undefeated teams delivered one of the most wild, roller-coaster games there’s been in 2019. After battling to a 2-2 score late in the second half, a fight broke out with :01 remaining in regulation. Each team had a player ejected after red cards were doled out. Clifton, however, battled through the adversity and came out with the win courtesy of a Danny Tobon golden goal (96′). The Mustangs will face Hunterdon Central in the Group 4 title game Sunday afternoon. Hunterdon Central 2 Toms River North 1 | Group 4 Semifinal The Red Devils fell behind 1-0 early before storming back to take down the Mariners. Ali Baish opened the scoring for Toms River North, before Central’s Brady Mullins tied the game before halftime. Marc Costa gave the Red Devils the lead early in the second half, and they hung on for the victory. Hunterdon Central will face Clifton in the Group 4 state final on Sunday at 12:30. Millburn will look to take home their first title since 2012 after falling to Ocean Township in the big game last season. Warm up with JSZ’s Week 6 highlights featuring eight games around New Jersey including an OT thriller in North Jersey, a streak buster by Somerville and a wild finish in Manalapan between the Braves and RBC Ramapo 35 Wayne Hills 28 (OT) Another iteration of one of North Jersey’s best rivalries means unpredictability and anxiety. Ramapo starting quarterback Charles DiPrima had two first-half touchdowns (1 run, 1 pass) yet was sidelined by a knee injury to start the third quarter. It was then that senior backup Chris Valvano stepped in and led the Raiders past a surging Wayne Hills squad with an overtime touchdown pass to Sean Clapp for the win. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights from Franklin Lakes: Somerville 28 Rahway 14 Mid-State 38 fans had Friday night’s matchup between 5-1 Somerville and undefeated Rahway circled for some time. The Pioneers fell behind 14-8 at halftime, but in the second act Somerville with 4 interceptions and touchdowns from Ethan Hillman, Jaimen Bryant and Cookie Desiderio were able to shutdown a Rahway team that had outscored opponents 242-51 coming in. Eric Bryant finished with three interceptions while brother Jaimen had two takeaways along with his score. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights: Manalapan 20 Red Bank Catholic 14 Andre Johnson had 157 yards including a 70-yard TD run that put Manalapan ahead for good in a wild game in the Shore Conference. RBC jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on TD runs by Elijah Jules and Billy Guidetti. Manalapan trailed 14-10 at the half and took the lead on Johnson’s 3rd quarter run. Down by six, RBC drove to the 18-yard line before an attempted spike to stop the clock was ruled a fumble ending hopes of a Caseys dramatic comeback. Week Three wraps up with plenty of intriguing games across the Garden State. From a triple-overtime thriller to a national out of state power coming to NJ, watch it all now! Delbarton 39 DePaul Catholic 37 (3OT) Cole Freeman had a 25-yard touchdown and a 2-point conversion in the third overtime session in a wild shootout in Morristown. DePaul Catholic rallied from a 17-9 fourth-quarter deficit to draw even thanks to an Andrew Butler TD pass to Edward Conoran followed by a two-point conversion. The Spartans had a chance to win it in regulation but Jake Jarmolowich blocked the game-winning attempt to force overtime. Jarmolowich added two TD catches in overtime while Butler hooked up with Teddy Afful for two scores. The Spartans missed the two-point conversion that would have ended the game in a tie. Rahway handed the Hilltoppers their first loss of the season as they remain perfect at 3-0. Nasir Robinson rushed for three touchdowns in the win. Kavon Lewis and Tyionn Brewer each threw a TD pass, to Torvon Ransome and Jymir Gilliam respectively. Aaron Frazier-Spencer returned a fumble for a score for Penns Grove as well. Jack Gillies connected with Mike Sirico for the Golden Hawks’ only touchdown of the day. Rahway’s Rashon Bradford wins Central Jersey Week 1 Game Ball
Rahway kicked off the 2019 season in a big way by defeating Voorhees 50-0. The Indians were led by Rashon “RaRa” Bradford who finished with three scores that included a receiving, rushing and a 51 yard defensive touchdown on an interception to cap off the night. The fans have spoken and he is JSZ’s Central Jersey Game Ball Winner for Week 1. Rahway 49 Carteret 46 – Boys Basketball Rahway remained undefeated on the year with a nail biting 49-46 win over Carteret. After trailing by six to close out the first quarter, the Indians took a 23-21 lead at halftime. JSZ brings you the final three sectional championships of the NJ state playoffs. Sunday high school championship football brings JSZ cameras to wins for Summit, Ramapo and Rumson-Fair Haven. Rumson-Fair Haven 42 Somerville 35 – Central Jersey Group 3 Championship Alex Maldjian had an epic workhorse performance with 50 carries for 281 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Bulldogs avenged last year’s sectional title loss to Somerville at Rutgers by handing the Pioneers their first loss of the season on their home field. Jalahn Dabney had 270 yards of combined offense with four TD passes and a TD run, but RFH scored on its first possession and never surrendered the lead. Summit went ahead 22-0 on three scores from running back Joe Lusardi. Rahway would counter with back to back scores of their own to make it a one possession game. However, following an interception from Jack Kelly and a touchdown a touchdown from Max Jackson the Hilltoppers would eventually walk away with a 36-14 victory. Lincoln – 46 St. Peter’s Prep – 45 in OT Donte Darby stepped into the go-ahead three pointer with just over a minute to play in overtime to give the Lincoln Lions a 46-45 win over their Jersey City rival St. Peter’s Prep. Rahway 72 Roselle 67 Rahway came into tonight undefeated (15-0), and after the first quarter of this game it seemed they would add their 16th win easily over the Roselle Rams. However, in the 2nd half the Rams came storming back to give the Indians a run for their money. Unfortunately for Roselle, they came up short and Rahway’s Keyshawn Cummings and Nick Galette teamed up to put this W away for the Indians late in the fourth. Those highlights now available: Hunterdon Central 64 Phillipsburg 55 The Phillipsburg Stateliners and Hunterdon Central Red Devils are two teams that have had similar 2017-2018 seasons; however, they each present different strengths. NJ’s best gather for 2017 JSZ Football Banquet
Jersey Sports Zone brought the top players from the 2017 New Jersey high school football season to the APA Hotel in Woodbridge for our first football banquet. Our All-Zone consisted of top position players from around the state. Our Plays of the Week and Plays of the Year winners were also honored. The night culminated with our Prep Offensive and Defensive Players of the year and the presentation of JSZ’s Zoneman Trophy, awarded to the top player in New Jersey. Freehold Boro’s Ashante Worthy captured the vote from coaches and media around the state following a 4,000 yard combined offensive season with over 60 touchdowns for the Colonials: 2017 Zoneman Trophy Balloting JSZ secured votes from head coaches and media around the state (55 total) to ask their vote for the most outstanding player in New Jersey. 1st place votes get 3 points, 2 points for 2nd and 1 point for 3rd. Union comes back to win Snapple Bowl XXIV
Union 27 Middlesex 14 A 60 minute lightning delay at the half threatened the final high school football game for all-stars from Union and Middlesex, but the skies cleared and the second half produced a great game. Union had a 7-0 lead at the half thanks to a Roselle High connection as Gerald Hairston found teammate Drew Stephens on a 26 yard TD pass play. Middlesex rallied from 13-0 down to take a 14-13 lead in the fourth quarter on a DeShai Smith 22 yard TD catch. But Cranford quarterback Brian Oblachinski guided Union to two fourth quarter scores and earned the MVP honors.
