Bergen Catholic 52 Smyrna (DE) 6

Steve Angeli was nearly flawless throwing for 360 yards and five touchdown passes and DJ Samuels led a defensive onslaught with a three-sack game to give Bergen Catholic a second straight dominating win against an out-of-state opponent.

Donovan Catholic 54 Archbishop Stepinac (NY) 14 | Rumble on the Raritan

In a game originally scheduled to be played at Rutgers, the Griffins lit up their home scoreboard to open the season. Kyree Drake took home MVP honors, as he caught a pair of touchdown passes and rushed for a score off a fake punt. Jalin Butler finished with three TD passes, while Donovan Catholic finished with three defensive touchdowns. Dante Vernieri returned two INTs for TDs, and Caron McNair had a pick-six as well.

JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the highlights and reaction from Toms River:

Don Bosco 21 Iona Prep (NY) 7 | Rumble on the Raritan

A dangerous combination of running back Ronnie Heath and Don Bosco’s relentless front seven set the tone early for Don Bosco to secure their first win of the 2021 season. Heath notched 124 yards and a pair of scores while the defense shut out the Gaels of New Rochelle, New York in the second half.

JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights and reaction from Ramsey:

DePaul Catholic 40 Cardinal Hayes (NY) 19 | Rumble on the Raritan

It seems fair to say that the Nick Campanile era at DePaul Catholic got off to a good start. Senior QB A.J. Rodriguez passed for 176 yards and four touchdowns in his varsity debut for the Spartans. Rodriguez was surrounded by two talented backs – Tyler Brown (TD catch, TD run) and Anthony Almeida (three TD catches) – while the defense stifled Duke QB commit Henry Belin.

JSZ’s Jay Cook has highlights from Wayne:

Winslow Twp. 42 Camden Catholic 20

The Eagles put together a 36-point explosion in the first half and cruised to a victory over the Fighting Irish. Senior QB Hamas Duren was nearly perfect in the first half, throwing for three touchdowns on the night. Freshman WR Cam Miller scored a pair of big touchdowns in the win, including a 50-yard catch-and-run to cap off the big first half.

JSZ’s James Mooney has the highlights from Winslow Township:
