Holy Spirit 35 St. Joseph Academy 24

In a game that featured four lead changes, Gavin Roman took over in the second half to lead the Spartans to victory. Roman rushed for a touchdown, caught a TD pass and had a crucial interception. Sean Burns and Michael Weaver also scored, while Trevor Cohen threw a pair of touchdown passes and rushed for a TD in the win for Spirit (1-1). Jahmeer Cartagena was outstanding for the Wildcats (1-1) in the loss, catching a TD pass and finishing with a pair of interceptions, including a pick-six.

Bridgewater-Raritan 17 Sayreville 14

Both teams in this Big Central Conference matchup opened with scores in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7 early. With the game knotted at 14 late in the fourth quarter, Sam Valeira’s 21 yard game-winning field goal with time expiring led Bridgewater-Raritan to a 17-14 win over Sayreville in week one.

Colts Neck 28 Toms River North 21

Tommy Fallon’s six-yard TD pass to sophomore tight end Eric Loueiro with :17 seconds left capped off a 14 play, 77-yard drive that took up 7:50 of the clock to give the Cougars a come from behind win on the road. Toms River North had a 14-0 lead in the first half and took a 21-14 lead at the end of three quarters following sophomore QB Micah Ford’s second TD run of the game before Fallon answered with a 39 yard TD run and engineering the game-winning drive. Ramapo 28 West Essex 6

Welcome to the Jack Grusser era of Ramapo football. Grusser, a junior transfer from Bergen Catholic, lit up West Essex with three passing touchdowns and another score on the ground as the Raiders thumped the Knights in the first-ever meeting between these two traditional SFC public powers.

Shawnee 38 Kingsway 0 | Rumble on the Raritan

The Renegades kicked off its 2021 season with a bang by shutting down the Dragons in a “Rumble on the Raritan” matchup. Senior QB Matt Welsey led the way for Shawnee, rushing for three touchdowns on the night and earned the game’s MVP award. Senior RB Dean Bialous added a rushing touchdown of his own in the victory.
