It might not feel like spring yet, but the turn of the calendar into April means baseball season is here. JSZ takes you around the state for some standout Opening Day performances as we kick off our 2022 baseball coverage. Stay tuned as all the highlights come in!


Mainland 9 Clearview 8 | Coaches vs. Cancer Classic

The Mustangs trailed by five runs twice in the game, but battled back to beat the Pioneers. Mainland plated four runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, including a walk-off RBI single from Christian Elliott. Nick Wagner hit a two-run home run in the victory for the Stangs. Mike Flax hit a three-run homer for Clearview in the loss.

Middletown South 6 Freehold Twp. 0

Ben Schild throws a 16 strikeout no-hitter and the Eagles use a five-run 5th inning to secure an impressive opening day win. Schild threw 95 pitches and walked just one batter. The Eagles committed two errors in the infield but Schild was able to shut down the Patriots lineup. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has highlights and post-game reaction from Opening Day in Middletown:

Hun School 14 Bergen Catholic 6

It was opening day for NJSIAA teams, but Hun already has games under their belt and looks to be hitting its stride. The Raiders (3-0) brought fireworks from the opening pitch to the final in a big win against a perennial North Jersey power. Ryan DiMaggio led the way on the bump with eight strikeouts and no walks across five innings of work. Michael Chiaravallo knocked in four RBI – including a three-run home run – while Carson Applegate notched a pair of RBI.

Robbinsville 10 Nottingham 6

Robbinsville defeated Nottingham 10-6 to begin the 2022 high school baseball season. It was a tight 3-3 battle until the bottom of the fourth when Robbinsville scored four runs. Wake Forrest commit Luke Billings added a pair of RBI’s in the sixth, Billings also pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs while collecting five strike outs.
