Old Bridge volleyball makes history with four straight TOC Titles
Old Bridge 2 Southern 1 | Tournament of Champions Final Old Bridge captured their fourth consecutive Tournament of Champions Title with a 2-1 comeback win over Southern. The Knights fell 25-20 in the first set before escaping the second with a narrow 25-23 victory. In the third Old Bridge would pull away late, leading by as many as 8, eventually taking the set 25-16. Blake Krapf finished with 13 kills while Pavlo Chernyshov had 15. With the regular season coming to a close in the softball world – and baseball soon to follow – Jersey Sports Zone is concluding its last round of RWJ Barnabas Health Game Balls for the 2021-2022 year. Take a look at who had standout games from both North and Central Jersey! Maddie Weir, Lodi Immaculate (North Jersey Softball) Lodi Immaculate’s big hitter Maddie Weir has now won JSZ Game Balls in back to back seasons. This year’s award comes after a monster game on May 10 against Paterson Charter. She went 3-4 with 3 HR and 6 RBI. Weir brought in 45 percent (2,268 votes) to bring home the award. JSZ’s Jay Cook presented Weir with her game ball after practice earlier this week: Aiden Cody, St. John Vianney (Central Jersey Baseball) Aiden Cody has been the Lancers’ staff ace all season long and delivered one of this top performances of the season last week. Cody tossed a complete game one-hitter with 14 K’s to lead St. John Vianney to a 1-0 victory over Manasquan on May 10. He commanded just shy of 40 percent of the vote to bring home the weekly honor. Ryan Rogers, Saint Rose (Central Jersey Baseball) The Saint Rose senior pitcher had a stellar complete-game shutout with 13 strikeouts against Ocean Township to win our JSZ Week 5 Central Jersey Game Ball. We stopped by Saint Rose to give Ryan his Game Ball: Dimitra & Zoe Milonopoulos, Old Bridge (Central Jersey Softball) A little bit of twin magic was at work when the Milonopoulos sisters took the field against East Brunswick on May 11. Dimitra and Zoe combined to go 5-8 at the dish and also collectively knocked in five runs in a 6-0 win. The duo edged out a fellow GMC nominee to win the awards 3,043 total votes. The “Boss'” Big Day Powers NBC To State Playoff Win
The Hounds are heating up at just the right time. Led by a productive day from Gwen Quackenboss, sixth-seeded Northern Burlington (15-8) punched their ticket to the next round of the Central Jersey Group 4 sectional playoffs with a 6-3 win over three-seed Old Bridge (14-8) in Middlesex County on Thursday. Quackenboss was a force at the plate. She was 3-3 with 3 RBI and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Her mammoth two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning was the finishing touch on a big win for NBC. The Hounds will face the winner of 10-Marlboro vs. 2-Jackson Memorial in the sectional semifinals next week. Camden 100 Woodrow Wilson 54 | Boys The High hit triple digits for the second time this season, knocking off the crosstown rival Tigers. DJ Wagner once again led the way with a game-high 31 points. Cian Medley added 21 points for Camden (11-2), while St. Joseph’s commit Rasheer Fleming scored 13 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Zoe Holman scored 17 points for Wilson (7-2) in the loss. Old Bridge’s Leena Tran Wins First Central Jersey Game Ball of the Year
Old Bridge has got off to a hot start so far in the 2021-2022 Girls Basketball season, the 6-2 Knights are one of the premiere teams in the Greater Middlesex Conference and a big contributor to that success is junior Leena Tran. Tran has already surpassed her total points from last year (112), in OB’s 61-34 win over Edison she recorded 18 points. The fans have spoken and she is our Central Jersey Week 1 Game Ball Winner.

Camden 117 Eastern 56 | Boys The Panthers poured in the points from the start, as they cruised to victory over the Vikings. DJ Wagner led The High with a game-high 17 points. Cian Medley added 14 points, while while St. Joseph’s commit Rasheer Fleming scored 13 points for Camden (6-0). Noah Payne scored a team-high 16 points for Eastern (4-5) in the loss. Camden now gets set for a showdown with national powerhouse Montverde Academy (FL) at the Metro Classic in Trenton on Thursday night. St. Thomas Aquinas 59 Old Bridge 54 | Girls No. 9 St. Thomas Aquinas (4-0) escaped a close 59-54 victory over Old Bridge (5-1) to hand the Knights their first loss of the season. Ahead 37-23 at halftime thanks to a 16 point performance from sophomore Amarilis Shubick in the first two quarters, Old Bridge rallied back to cut the deficit to 49-52 heading into the fourth. The Knights got a lift from Payton Alcorn, who ended the night with 13 points, but St. Thomas was able to hold on for the victory late, despite registering just 10 points in the final quarter. Boyer And Hopewell Valley Offense Too Much For Old Bridge
Hopewell Valley 9 Old Bridge 3 Hopewell Valley (4-2) bounced back from two straight losses with a 9-3 win over Old Bridge (1-5). The Bulldogs got off to a hot start, scores from Liam Yeoman and Joe Greenspoon gave Hopewell a 2-0 lead after the first period. Old Bridge Girls Soccer outlasts Monroe in O.T. to advance to GMC Semifinals
Old Bridge 3 Monroe 2 | Girls (5) Old Bridge (10-6-1) defeated Greater Middlesex Conference rival (4) Monroe (9-4-1) 3-2 in overtime to reach the GMC Tournament Semifinals. Monroe would take a 2-0 lead at halftime off goals from Jennifer Ward and Lauren Pascal. Old Bridge would rally back to tie the game in the second half as Lilly Zanfini and Alyssa Penn would score. The OceanFirst Bank Game of the Week features the Shore Conference 1 vs. 2 showdown between Rumson-Fair Haven and Red Bank Catholic along with all the action of Hillsborough’s shutout win of Old Bridge Red Bank Catholic 21 Rumson-Fair Haven 14 Sabino Portella ran for 144 yards and a touchdown and the Caseys defense delivered a signature performance to hand RFH (5-1) its first loss of the season. RBC (7-0) raced out to a 14-0 lead and a 21-7 lead in the third on Portella’s two-yard run. Torin Harmon had a 48-yard TD run and Rajahn Cooper added a 7-yard TD catch from Alex Brown. RFH scored on a 1-yard TD run in the final seconds in the first half by QB Colin Kennedy and made it a one-score game on a Kennedy TD pass to Aiden Cosuccio. In the end, RFH’s defense produced two turnovers on fumbles but it was the Caseys defense that locked down the victory. Middlesex County Stars Headline Week Three Central Jersey Game Ball
The race for our Week Three Central Jersey Game Ball voting came down to the wire, so much so circumstances led us to crowning two winners. Old Bridge quarterback Owen Haughney has been one of the biggest threats to come out of the Big Central 5C Division in 2021. In the Knights 40-11 victory over South Brunswick, Haughney had 151 passing yards and three touchdowns (passing, two rushing). Zaimer Wright has quickly become the go-to playmaker for Sayreville in just his sophomore season. The Bombers upset North Brunswick 35-22 in week three, a game in which Wright rushed for 158 yards and four touchdowns. After missing an entire year in 2020, New Jersey high school girls lacrosse made up for lost time with a memorable season. With 8 Under Armour All-Americans from our state, the level of play was off the charts! We continue our summer recap series with a look at the top 10 girls lacrosse games captured by JSZ cameras. New Jersey girls lacrosse has a national reputation with good reason. We saw some incredible games and some of the best high school teams in the country show their stuff in the spring. JSZ looks back on the top 10 games from the 2021 season: #10 Cherokee wins state title With a 21-2 season, Cherokee more than earned its 2021 Group 4 state championship. Jersey Sports Zone reveals the brackets for the Last Dance Baseball Tournament. We’ve got all the matchups as 222 teams try to be the last team standing in Trenton on July 30. In case you missed our live show, check out all the brackets plus interviews with players and coaches around the state. The spring sports season was taken away from New Jersey high school athletes but thanks to an extraordinary effort by the New Jersey high school baseball community, sports is coming back and Garden State diamond squads get an incredible summer tournament for One Last Dance. JSZ presents the Last Dance Baseball Tournament Selection Show. Just like the NCAA Baseball Tournament, we have all the brackets, matchups and interviews with coaches and players from around the state. Click on the video below to watch the reveal of the 222 teams that will play in 32 different regions. We will have coverage of all nine days of the Tournament starting on July 14 with pool play around the state About the Last Dance Tournament 222 teams, 32 regions. Every team is guaranteed three games in modified pool play. Regions with four teams will play round robin with the best record advancing to the 32-team single elimination tournament that begins in week two. Eight team regions will have modified pool play in the first two days. Teams with 2-0 records will meet up on the final day to determine the region winner. While all the teams are varsity baseball players, the tournament is not associated with the NJSIAA and school uniforms will not be worn. Roselle Catholic 45 Manasquan 43 | Boys | Hoop Group Boardwalk Showcase CJ Wilcher’s basket with 1.1 seconds left gave Roselle Catholic its first lead since 2-0 in the first quarter as the Lions avoided a spirited upset bid against the Warriors. Manasquan took a 30-25 lead at the end of three quarters after a Tim McEneney three-pointer. The Warriors had two chances to take the lead in the final minute. Ben Roy’s floater in the lane fell short and Corey Floyd Jr. was able to throw a long pass to Wilcher who came through. Freshman Simeon Wilcher had 11 points to lead the way for Roselle with Cliff Omoruyi providing 6 points, 8 rebounds and 8 blocked shots. The state playoffs are officially underway on the girls side, with opening round action all across the Garden State on Monday. JSZ has you covered with some fantastic match-ups to kick off the postseason! Clearview 1 Jackson Memorial 0 – Group 4 South It didn’t take very long for the upset of the postseason to happen. Clearview entered the playoffs as the No. 15 seed with a sub – .500 record, but none of that mattered as the Pioneers knocked off No. 2 seed Jackson Memorial on their home pitch. Giovanna Castorina added a goal in the second half, as Township advances to face third-seeded Rancocas Valley in the S.J. Group 4 quarterfinals. JSZ has plenty of exciting action for you, including both semifinal games from the South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association Tournament. Freehold Township 2 Manasquan 2 (FT wins 4-3 on PKs) – Boys Shore Conference Tournament Final John Wilhlem turned away three penalty kicks to give Freehold Township the 2019 SCT championship. The Freehold Township keeper had a PK stop in regulation and then stopped the final two Manasquan attempts setting the stage for Josh Leonetti to kick the game winner. Zach Orrico scored both goals in regulation for Freehold Township while Manasquan got goals from Drew Greenblatt and Tyler Gaugenty. The championship game did not disappoint. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the highlights and post-match reaction from Shore Regional: Red Bank Catholic 2 Toms River North 0 – Girls Shore Conference Tournament Final Junior Emma Bruther came off the bench and delivered a goal and an assist to give RBC the seventh Shore Conference title in school history. Bruther’s long left foot from 30 yards out hit the crossbar that allowed Morgan Cupo to head in the rebound to give the Caseys a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. Five minutes later, Bruther ran down a ball in the left corner and delivered another lethal left foot. In the ninth round of PKs, Quakers keeper Kevin Muhic made a diving save, before Alex Lopacinski coverted to end it. Cleary found the back of the net again in the 79th minute to force overtime. Clearview trailed 3-2 in penalty kicks but were able to get goals from Pearse Costello and Cody Scully. Rumson-Fair Haven 21 Mater Dei Prep 16 Jack Kelly grabbed a blocked pass from Gordon Forsyth and rumbled 50-yards for a score to break a 14-14 tie and give Rumson-Fair Haven a huge home win. The Seraphs raced out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter on TD’s by Clarence Lewis and Malik Ingram, but RFH responded with a 68 yard TD run by John Volker. Geoff Schroder’s 32-yard TD run on the first play from the scrimmage set the stage for Kelly’s game-winning pick-six. The Falcons shut out Colonia in the second half, limiting them to only 90 yards of offense all night long. K’Shawn Schulters’ pick-six in the fourth quarter ending up being the game-winning play. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights from Colonia: West Deptford 28 Haddonfield 14 The Eagles, dominant through much of the game, survived a late scare against the rival Bulldogs. West Deptford led 28-0 heading into the fourth quarter when Haddonfield rallied with 14 points in less than two minutes to cut the lead in half. Tyshawn Bookman led an effective rushing attack for the Eagles, carrying the ball 14 times for 140 yards. Quarterback Aaron Graeber rushed for two touchdowns on the night, including a 22-yard scamper just before halftime. Gavin Shields contributed on both sides of the ball for the Eagles, scoring on a tough five-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and adding a 18-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the third quarter. Old Bridge prepares for “Battle of Route 18” in season opener
Following a Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division Championship in 2017, Old Bridge failed to repeat success last year finishing with just three wins. The Knights under Coach Anthony Lanzafama in his 10th season will look to senior defenders Manny Joseph and Sam Kamara III as well as sophomore quarterback Owen Haughney to lead the way this year. It’s a championship Sunday on the diamond. The Hun Raiders made it four straight NJ Prep “A” state championships and Old Bridge topped South Brunswick to claim the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament title. We’ve got highlights and post-game reaction from both championship games! Old Bridge 2 South Brunswick 1 – Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament Championship Old Bridge captured its first Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament Title since 2011 with a thrilling 2-1 victory over rival South Brunswick. The Knights fell behind 1-0 in the first off a balk, but quickly regrouped on offense to go ahead 2-1 on a fielder’s choice and error in the second inning. Senior Matt Baker who technically allowed the Viking’s only earned run had a different persona after shaking off the early blunder. Baker allowed just five hits and finished with six strikeouts. Old Bridge 8 Monroe 2 It’s never a dull moment when Greater Middlesex Conference rivals Old Bridge and Monroe get together. Thursday’s matchup saw the Knights hand Monroe their first loss of the season. OB got things started at the plate early putting up five runs in the first inning. Both teams would trade blows in the fourth and fifth inning each adding two runs. For the Love of the Game: A Tribute to Zach & Jude Attianese
In the summer of 2018 the Old Bridge community suffered a huge loss when the lives of Zach and Jude Attianese were tragically taken in an automobile accident. Zach, 20, a rising pitcher in the NCAA and MLB prospect at the University of North Carolina, Jude his father and number one fan. Aside from being New Jersey’s 2014 Gatorade Player of they Year Old Bridge high school, Zach Attianese personified what it was to be a good sport as he worked tirelessly to achieve his dream of being a professional baseball player. The community organized a 10 team softball tournament entitled “For the Love of the Game” with all proceeds to be put in a scholarship for a high school athlete that exemplifies the character of not only being a star athlete, but a caring person like Zach Attinese. Tight end Tyler Devera also caught a trick play touchdown before the half to give the Crusaders a lead that would never be caught. Old Bridge takes down Southern to win first volleyball State Championship!
Old Bridge 2 Southern 1 – Volleyball State Championship Jersey Sports Zone is proud to bring you the exciting conclusion to the volleyball season with an all out State Final thriller from South Brunswick high school. Third ranked Old Bridge defeated defending Champions No. 1 Southern 2-1 to capture their first ever volleyball State Title. The Knights took the first set 25-22 before Southern answered back to win the second 25-21. In the third and final set they relied on captain Elan Dorkhman to keep the game close and Junior Andrew Zaleck scored the game winning kill to lead Old Bridge to glory. Jackie Ventricelli erupted for a career high 35 points in Sayreville’s 59-39 win over Old Bridge. Jackie was awarded JSZ’s North Jersey Game Ball for her performance. Watch the following games: Red Bank Catholic 2 Wall Township 2 RBC goalie Ciaran McNelis had an amazing 50 save game as the Caseys earned a tie with a state power. Wall remains unbeaten with an 11-0-2 record. A wild game that saw a shattered glass in the opening minute, a must see end to end rush from Wall defenseman Bobby Seelinger and some unbelievable saves from the Caseys goalie. Watch all the action and post-game reaction: Notre Dame 4 Princeton 3 Billed as one of the “must see games this week” Princeton and Notre Dame did not disappoint. The Little Tigers lead the Colonial Valley Conference and Notre Dame in the mix sits at 4 so this one had big expectations to possibly shake things up for the CVC. Princeton took the lead in the first but the Irish countered to make it 2-2 entering the third. With an early goal in the final period it looked as though the Little Tigers would take this one 3-2 but after a game tying score from Vinny Giangrasso, Ben Killian set up the golden goal with 42 seconds remaining to lead the Irish to a 4-3 victory. St. Joe’s Metuchen 4 Old Bridge 2 The Greater Middlesex Conference put on a fantastic show Wednesday afternoon as conference leader St. Joe’s Metuchen paid Old Bridge a visit for a quick scoring shoot out. The Falcons jumped ahead 3-0 at the end of the first, but OB countered with two fast scores of their own in the second. Ultimately St. Joe’s would prevail to improve to 6-5-1 as the number one spot in the GMC still rests in Metuchen. Watch the highlights now! Mahwah – 3 Ramapo – 0 Bergen County Tournament Opening Round Kevin Johnston led the way with a hat trick, and Jared Moss recorded a 9 save shutout, as The 6th seeded Thunderbirds of Mahwah high school opened the bergen county tournament with a 3-0 win over 11th seeded Ramapo. Morris Knolls – 3 Southern Regional – 0 Southern Regional made the trip north to Wayne to face off with Morris Knolls, and the Golden Eagles protected their home ice. Ty Franchi recored a shutout in net, and Ryan Martinez scored an incredible goal, as Morris Knolls came away with a 3-0 win over Southern. Knolls improves to 7-4-1 on the season with the win.
