Hunterdon Central Dominates to Repeat as HWS Champions
Hunterdon Central 12 Pope John | HWS Final No. 10 Hunterdon Central cruised to a 12-3 victory over third seed Pope John to capture a second consecutive Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament Title. The top seeded Red Devils began with a four run first inning and added three more in the third for an early commanding 7-0 lead. Central scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Logan Mason, Chase Moskowitz and Christian Petino all had two RBI’s. MVP honors went to senior catcher Brandon Padre who went 3-4 with an RBI. Pitcher James Scott got the win as he went four innings and despite giving up a three run home run in the third, allowed just 3 hits and finished with 7 strike outs. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights: Thank you to RWJ Barbara’s Health Group for sponsoring our Hunterdon Central coverage.

Hunterdon Central Dominates Pope John in HWS Title Rematch
After losing last year’s Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex championship game to Pope John, Hunterdon Central had revenge on their minds. It didn’t take the Red Devils long to impose their will in the 2022 rendition of this title game. Junior FOGO Sean Creter, a Maryland commit, led the way for Hunterdon Central (13-0) with a hat trick in a 10-3 win over the Lions. Brendan Lehrer had a four point game and Dylan Johnson also chipped in a pair of goals to upend Pope John. The Lions (8-7) only trailed 3-2 after an eventful first quarter. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights and reaction from a rainy day in Flemington: Jersey Sports Zone’s coverage of Hunterdon Central is brought to you by Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerville.

Watch Sunday 2.16 JSZ State Championship Wrestling Highlights
Jersey Sports Zone is in Toms River for the Wrestling Group Championships. We have in-depth coverage and extended highlights of every single match from Sunday afternoon. Enjoy the coverage — we’ll see you in A.C.! Delbarton 54 St. Augustine Prep 7 | Non-Public A Final For almost a decade the team state title has eluded the Green Wave of Delbarton. After a win over Bergen Catholic en route to a Sectional Championship, Delbarton knew this was their season to regain the title. A sound victory for the Green Wave laid their final claim to the #1 team in New Jersey. Delbarton won 12 out of 14 bouts as Nicholas Nardone won by pin while Anthony Clark and Andrew Tryoczynski won by major decision. Alex Marshall won by major for the Hermits. The highlight of the match came at 195 lbs as it was a #1 vs #2 showdown. Luke Chakonis (1) from Delbarton defeated Mike Misita (2) of St. Augustine 6-4 in Sudden Victory to cap off the win for Delbarton. JSZ’s Kenneth Bradley has the highlights from Toms River: Camden Catholic 51 Pope John XXIII 15 | Non-Public B Final The Fighting Irish are on the top of the mountain in Non-Public B once again after a convincing victory against the Lions. Pope John briefly took the lead after a pin by Eddie Ventresca at 126. However, the Irish got back on track when Danny McKennon picked up a pin at 132 and they would not cede another bout the rest of the way. Bonus points were crucial in this match as Camden Catholic racked up seven pins, including four in the final six bouts. JSZ’s James Mooney has the highlights from Toms River: Coverage of Camden Catholic is brought to you by NJM Insurance. Paulsboro 50 Delaware Valley 9 | Group 1 Final Less than 48 hours after receiving an ICD surgically placed in his chest, Brandon Green was in Toms River to see Paulsboro win a fifth straight state championship and the 33rd mat title in the program’s rich history. Green, the 2019 state champion at 170 lbs. collapsed on February 3rd and saw his career come to an end due to scar tissue around his heart. Paulsboro and the entire wrestling community rallied and Green received a standing ovation and stayed on the bench to root his teammates on. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the highlights and post-match reaction: High Point 38 West Deptford 28 | Group 2 Final High Point has returned to the peak at Group 2. The Wildcats captured their sixth team state title — and third in the last four years — after rolling their way through West Deptford in the final. High Point studs Nick Douma, Josh Gervey and Billy Talmadge all wrestled back-to-back-to-back in the lineup and each delivered bonus points. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights from an emotional win: Montville 34 West Essex 33 | Group 3 Final A rematch from earlier in the month that went in favor of the Mustangs would prove to be no different the second time around. Though close, Montville prevailed once again over the Knights. A 7-7 split in the bouts, it was the four pins that set the Mustangs above the Knights. Aaron Kurzer, Brandon Teresa, Noah Fox and Michael Conrad all won by pin for Montville. Carson Barry, Alex Jones, and Samuel Carsillo won by major decision for the Knights in the loss. Montville wins their first ever Group Title. JSZ’s Kenneth Bradley has the highlights from Toms River: North Hunterdon 34 Kingsway 22 | Group 4 Final Does is get any better than perfection? Just ask North Hunterdon. The Lions completed the 20-0 undefeated season Sunday on the heels of yet another rousing performance. The Lions won seven-straight bouts from 170 pounds to 106 pounds to power a comeback win. Sophomore heavyweight Liam Akers clinched the win with a first-period pin via cradle. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights: Southern Regional 38 Manalapan 24 | Group 5 Final Freshman Nick Bennet got a 4-2 sudden victory at 126 pounds that sparked the Rams to a second straight Group 5 state championship. Following Bennet’s comeback victory, Southern had back to back pins from Matt Brielmier and Eddie Hummel to build an insurmountable lead. Robert Woodcock clinched the state title with a pin at 170 pounds. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has all the action from Toms River:

Pope John Prepping For Bounce-Back Season
Pope John’s football program has been one of the most consistent in North Jersey, taking trips to the Non-Public Group 3 semifinals in each of the last three seasons. But 2018 was marred by the lowest win total (two wins) under head coach Brian Carlson, and his Lions are intent on changing that. Seniors Mike DeNucci, David Heath and Connor Milks are returning for Pope John as they look to get back above the .500 mark and beyond. JSZ’s Jay Cook took the trip to Sparta to preview the 2019 Pope John Lions: Pope John 2019 Schedule Friday, Aug. 30 — at DePaul Catholic Saturday, Sept. 7 — vs. Paramus Catholic Saturday, Sept. 14 — vs. Iona Prep (NY) @ MetLife Stadium Friday, Sept. 20 — at Livingston Saturday, Oct. 5 — vs. Don Bosco Prep Saturday, Oct. 12 — at Delbarton Saturday, Oct. 19 — vs. Bergen Catholic Saturday, Oct. 26 — at St. Peter’s Prep Saturday, Nov. 2 — vs. Seton Hall Prep

JSZ Year in Review: Top Wrestling Matches of 2018
Jersey Sports Zone is about capturing great video highlights. As we get ready to turn the page towards the 2019-20 school year, we take one more look back at the top games captured by our cameras. Our series continues with wrestling. Plain and simple, New Jersey high school wrestling never disappoints. The state produces legit Division I talent year in and year out, and the 2018-2019 season was no different. Our list is a mix of the most viewed dual meets and state championship bouts from the season. #10: St. John Vianney’s Dean Peterson wins the 113-Pound State Championship It was a year to remember for Dean Peterson. The super sophomore rolled through his opponents all season long to a 39-0 record and his first state title. #9: Hunterdon Central’s Brett Ungar win the 106-Pound State Championship Brett Ungar and Tyler Klinksy each hadn’t lost a match all season long, but that would change when Ungar earned a major decision on his way to a state title. #8: Wall’s Rob Kanniard wins the 160-Pound State Championship Rob Kanniard might have had the most dominating season ever in New Jersey high school wrestling. He completed an undefeated 46-0 season, did not allow a single offensive point to be scored on him and won his first state. Kanniard now heads to Rutgers University to wrestle. #7: Howell 30 South Plainfeld 28 Howell and South Plainfield boast two of the most storied public school programs ever in New Jersey. The two powers clashed for bragging rights as the top public team in the Garden State. #6: Bergen Catholic’s Jacob Cardenas wins the 195-Pound State Championship Jacob Cardenas became the seventh wrestler in Bergen Catholic history to win multiple state championships after defeating Paramus’ Kyle Jacob, 6-3, in the state final. #5: Pope John’s JoJo Aragona wins the 138-Pound State Championship JoJo Aragona was ranked as the consensus No. 1 138-pound wrestler all season long and proved it once more by winning his first state championship. #4: Bergen Catholic 48 Delbarton 17 | Non-Public A North Sectional Final Bergen Catholic won 10 bouts and cruised through Delbarton to win its eighth-straight sectional crown. #3: Camden Catholic’s Lucas Revano wins the 145-Pound State Championship Anyone that’s seen Lucas Revano wrestle knows he has a thing for theatrics. Revano won his second consecutive state championship with an overtime pin. #2: St. Joseph (Mont.)’s Sammy Alvarez wins the 126-Pound State Championship It was the most heart-pounding, tense bout of the night in Atlantic City and it did not disappoint. In the first overtime period, Alvarez blocked, shrugged and spun for two against Robert Howard to win his first ever state championship. Alvarez, now committed to Rutgers University, also was named Most Outstanding Wrestler. #1: Blair Academy 45 Bergen Catholic 20 Bergen Catholic’s defeat of Blair Academy in 2018 was one of the most wild wins in all of America. The Bucs, however, used that loss as motivation to get revenge on Bergen Catholic at Lehigh University and secure their spot as the No. 1 high school team in America.

He is one of five New Jersey players selected to play in the 2019 All-American Bowl and is committed to play for Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide. Alfano dominated his competition in the Greater Middlesex Conference with 79 tackles and 10 sacks this season, along with a staggering 28 tackles for losses. JSZ’s Jay Cook gives you the inside-look at what makes Alfano such a highly-touted prospect: Jada Byers, St. Joseph (Hamm.) Running Back Byers was as electric as they come in the Garden State during his junior campaign. He looked like he was shot out of a cannon with the ball in his hands, rushing for 1,741 yards and 29 touchdowns on the season, all while helping power his St. Joe’s Wildcats to yet another Non-Public Group 2 championship. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez takes you down to Hammonton for a behind-the-scenes look at South Jersey’s most electrifying runner: Jalahn Dabney, Somerville Quarterback Dabney took over the starting quarterback job in Somerville at the end of the 2017 season and showcased his dynamic playmaking ability well throughout 2018. He compiled 3,444 yards from scrimmage this season and reached the end-zone 56 times to lead one of New Jersey’s most dangerous offenses. JSZ’s Courtney DuPont tells us what makes this dual-threat quarterback tick: Nick Kargman, Woodrow Wilson Quarterback Kargman will graduate from Woodrow Wilson with plenty of state records compiled during his senior season. The decorated South Jersey passer broke the state record single season passing mark with 3,963 yards and his 41 passing scores rank atop the state lists, as well. But what’s even more impressive is Kargman’s character off the field, as it’s made him an important part of the Woodrow Wilson community. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez tells us what makes Kargman so special: Rahmir Johnson, Bergen Catholic Running Back Johnson became the first Bergen Catholic rusher to break the 1,000-yard mark since 2008, a true testament to the level of competition that the Crusaders face on a week-to-week basis. After teammate Josh McKenzie went down with a torn ACL, Johnson assumed the full-time starting role and showcased his elite speed and craftiness all season long. He closed 2018 with 1,334 yards and 11 rushing scores. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story about this humble teammate and Nebraska commit: Steve Lubischer, Red Bank Catholic Quarterback Intelligence and athleticism is the blend of characteristics that has made Lubischer one of New Jersey’s most talented signal callers. At Red Bank Catholic, Lubischer blossomed into a premier dual-threat passer who had the ability to break the game on any down. JSZ’s chief operating officer Rich Chrampanis followed Lubischer’s trajectory all season long and tells us why this Boston College commit is so special: Other Top Vote-Getters Only the top-six vote-getters are on our Zoneman podium, but there were other plenty of players around the Garden State who had great seasons and garnered votes from coaches and media around the state. Those players were: 7th Place: Taquan Roberson, DePaul Catholic quarterback: Roberson, a Penn State commit, closed out his senior season in masterful fashion for the Spartans. He threw 29 touchdowns for 2,432 yards and will go down as one of the most decorated quarterbacks to play in New Jersey. 8th Place: Jalen Berger, Don Bosco Prep running back: Berger led one of New Jersey’s most talented backfields at Don Bosco Prep by displaying elite patience and explosiveness. Only a junior, he holds offers from top-tier Power 5 college football programs and has plenty more in the tank for his senior year. 9th Place: Juwon Jackson, Piscataway running back: Jackson was a main reason why Piscataway reached a 13-0 record and won both a sectional title and a newly-minted “Bowl Game” at MetLife Stadium. He rushed for 1,898 yards and 31 touchdowns on the season. 10th Place: Ronnie Hickman, DePaul Catholic wide receiver/defensive back: Hickman was arguably the most dangerous two-way player in New Jersey. Committed to Ohio State, Hickman was one of five New Jersey football players selected to the 2019 All-American Bowl. His senior season was unfortunately cut short due to a torn ACL late in the year. Josh Henderson wins JSZ 2018 Prep Player of the Year Hun running back and University of North Carolina commit Josh Henderson was named JSZ’s 2018 Prep Player of the Year. Don Bosco had to overcome a 79 save performance from Pope John goalie Matt Schoer and battle for a 2-1 OT win in the NJSIAA Non-Public Qtr Finals despite out-shooting the Lions 81-16 on goal. TJ Schweighardt tied the game at 1 with just 0:30 remaining in regulation, and Tristan Frese completed the comeback with a game-winning goal with just 0:45 to play in OT. #2: Don Bosco Prep 3 Delbarton 0 Mickey Burns, Michael Forgione and Tsubasa Konishi found the net as the Ironmen scored the first win in an eventual four-game showdown against the Green Wave: #1: Delbarton 2 Don Bosco Prep 1 (OT) – Gordon Cup Finals As the saying goes.. Andrew Bosland took a pass from Michael Balzarotti and sent home the game-winning goal for Delbarton in the sudden death overtime period at Codey Arena in West Orange. With one stroke, Bosland gave the Green Wave a 2-1 win, ended Don Bosco’s hopes for a perfect season, and brought the Gordon Cup back to Delbarton Schoo Jersey Sports Zone teams up with New Jersey Devils to honor NJ HS Hockey Jersey Sports Zone’s partnership with the New Jersey Devils gave us the chance to honor athletes from New Jersey high school hockey in a special way.
