Bernards 16 Johnson 2 | Boys | South Group 1 Quarterfinal
A two-goal, one-assist day helped David Brothers eclipse the 100 point plateau this season as the Mountaineers dominated the Crusaders. Charlie Hunnewell also had a big day, notching four goals in the win for top-seeded Bernards (18-2). Eighth-seeded Johnson (16-5) saw their season come to an end, but not totally without excitement. Rob Tyra scored his 106th goal this season – yes, this season – in the loss. Bernards will host New Providence in the semifinal round.
JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights from Bernardsville:
Ridge 8 Scotch Plains-Fanwood 5 | Boys | North Group 3 Quarterfinal
While the offense did their thing, the Red Devils defense turned it up a notch and played a major role in this quarterfinal win. Second-seeded Ridge (11-7) led by two goals at the half and didn’t give that lead up despite a late flurry from No. 7 seed Scotch Plains-Fanwood (10-10). Ryan Ward and AJ Lembo had big second half goals to keep the Red Devils in front for good. They’ll host Morris Knolls next in the semifinals.
JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights from Basking Ridge:
Kingsway 8 Manalapan 7 | Boys | South Group 4 Quarterfinal
The Dragons trailed by three entering the fourth and engineered an incredible comeback to reach the sectional semifinals. Mason Bryan scored the second of his two goals with 21 seconds left in regulation to give fourth-seeded Kingsway (15-3) the lead for good. Keegan Borkowski reached 50 goals on the season as he finished with a hat trick in the win. Matt Avivi had a hat trick in the loss for fifth-seeded Manalapan (13-5). Kingsway will face top-seeded Eastern on Monday.
