The state playoffs are underway in boys soccer.  JSZ brings you two games that went to PK’s and a golden goal from the Shore Conference. Check out all the action!


Newark East Side 2(3) vs. Ridge 2(0) Shootout | North 2 Group 4 First Round

The third-seeded Red Raiders had to battle tooth and nail to win their opening round playoff matchup. Newark East Side (12-2-1) rallied from a two-goal deficit at halftime to win via a shootout over fourteenth-seeded Ridge. Thierry De Souza and Lucas Zuleta scored both second half goals for Newark East Side and Rui Rosete made a pair of saves in the shootout round to lock up the win. Matias Hornos scored both goals for Ridge (10-5-2) in the loss. Newark East Side will face Hunterdon Central in the sectional quarterfinals.

Cedar Creek 0(5) Middle Township 0(3) Shootout | South Group 2 First Round

Offside traps and great goalkeeping from Kyle O’Connor kept the 5th-seeded Panthers off the board through 100 minutes, before 12th-seeded Creek completed the upset in penalty kicks. After missing a PK in regulation, Josh DiFilippo found redemption from the spot to send the Pirates through to the sectional quarterfinals.

Holmdel 5 Raritan 0 | Central Group 3 First Round

Stepan Kapranov scored a pair of goals to reach the 18-goal mark in his sophomore season to lead the Hornets into the second round of the Central Jersey Group 3 state playoffs.  David Weiner, Colin Hynes and Luke Brand also found the net for Holmdel (15-2-1) who will face Shore rival Rumson-Fair Haven in the quarterfinals.  RFH beat the Hornets 2-1 in the regular season.

Ocean Township 3 Middletown South 2 (OT) | Central Group 3 First Round

Stavros Fay’s second goal of the game came 1:02 into overtime to give the #9 seed a golden goal and a matchup with top seed Robbinsville in the Central Jersey Group 3 quarterfinals.  JSZ got to Middletown just in time to capture the game-winner and an interview with Fay:
