Week 8 marks the final week of the regular season in public high school football as JSZ brings you five matchups from the Thursday slate. Check back throughout the night as the highlights roll in!

Livingston 41 Bloomfield 34 | Super Football Conference

In what was a do-or-die game for both squads’ Group 5 playoff lives, Livingston RB Abel Paul delivered one of the most memorable performances in JSZ’s recent history in one of the craziest games you’ll see all year. The senior had 501 rushing yards and five touchdowns to lead the Lancers (5-4) to a 41-34 victory over Bloomfield (3-6). This marks the most yards in a game for any RB in New Jersey this season.

Paul started off the night with four straight touchdowns (22, 81, 8, 92) in the first half to give the Lancers a 27-0 lead with 2:30 remaining in the half. Then, Bloomfield stormed back with three unanswered scores: a 55-yard double pass from WR Michael Mickens to Christian Cradle, a 70-yard hook-and-ladder to Aaron Varner, and a last-second 28-yard TD pass from Brandon Plummer to Mickens to make it 27-20 at the break. In the 3rd, Plummer and RB Aiden Ruiz then had touchdowns of 75 and 44 yards, respectively, for five unanswered scores to give them a 34-27 lead.

Midway through the 4th, Livingston answered with a short TD pass from Troy Naylor to Shai Peled to tie it up. Then, Ryan Doherty’s ensuing pooch kick was recovered by Peled, and Paul scored his 5th TD from 38 out to give the Lancers the decisive lead.

Caleb Brown-Mason closed out his his high school career with a dominant performance topping 400 yards and five total touchdowns to give the Scarlet Fliers (2-7) a big boost to close out the season and erase a six game losing streak.  Brown-Mason had 16 carries for 275 yards and four touchdowns on the ground to go along with 128 passing yards and a TD pass.  Raritan took a 28-21 lead in the third quarter on Eric Berg’s second touchdown of the game befre Brown-Mason took over in the fourth.  The Neptune QB broke a 28-28 tie with a 39-yard pass to Daaron Lynch and put the game away with a 58-yard run.  Raritan (4-5) needs some help on Friday to get a spot in the Group 2 state playoffs.

Vineland 34 Highland 0 | West Jersey Football League

Quay’Shawn Davis intercepted a pass on the first play from scrimmage, setting the tone for what would be a strong performance by the Fighting Clan. George Figueroa III added two rushing touchdowns, while CJ Thomas also found the end zone. Thomas entered the game just 272 yards shy of breaking Super Bowl champion Isiah Pacheco’s single-season rushing record at Vineland (5-3). The Fighting Clan will likely hit the road for their first-round playoff matchup next week.
