Jersey Sports Zone spent the day with Lakewood on the first day of training camp and saw firsthand the dedication and closeness of a group of young men who are willing to do whatever it takes to represent their community. The Lakewood School District was $14.7 million in debt and facing massive budget cuts in 2017. With sports and after school activities on the chopping block, the fate of Piner Football was looking grim. It took $84,000 from the Lakewood Township Committee on June 22 to keep the Piners on the gridiron in 2017. LJ Clark has guided the Piners to 30 wins and four playoff appearances over the last five years. Facing low numbers for a Group 3 school, the players have overcome hardships off the field and have used football to improve their lives. JSZ takes you inside Lakewood Training Camp with coach L.J. Clark to learn how heart, determination and a timely loan from the Township Committee got the Piners back onto the field
