FREEHOLD – Over 200 athletes, coaches and parents came to iPlay America to celebrate a tremendous winter sports season on the Jersey Shore. Shore Sports Zone held its first winter sports banquet in Freehold with selections of our All-Zone teams in boys basketball, girls basketball and hockey. Following dinner, SSZ showed video highlights of every athlete who was honored culminating in our player of the year presentation in each sport.
Manaquan’s Marina Mabrey was crowned SSZ Miss Hoop Zone 2015 with Saint Rose’s Kat Phipps and Middletown South guard Stephanie Karcz on the podium
Congratulations to Rumson-Fair Haven’s Brendan Barry for capturing the 2015 SSZ Mister Hoop Zone trophy. He was joined on the podium by Toms River South’s Tymere Berry and Pat Andree of CBA
Howell’s Kyle Hallbauer was the state’s leading scorer and was named SSZ Hockey Player of the Year. He was joined by Middletown North’s Bobby Hampton and Saint John Vianney’s Matt Kidney on the big stage.
The highlight of the banquet came when SSZ presented a Brick Stars MVP trophy to Ryan Herrington. The younger brother of Point Pleasant Boro forward and SSZ All-Zone selection Owen Herrington, Ryan stole the show with an outstanding speech. The Brick Stars is a group of special needs athletes who have inspired with their play on the ice.
