Catholic tri-op upsets Rumson-Fair Haven with late third period goal

The tri-op of St. Rose/Donovan Catholic/Red Bank Catholic came to the Red Bank Armory and scored an upset win over state-ranked Rumson-Fair Haven. Watch all the action and post-game reaction now! Catholic 3 Rumson-Fair Haven 2 Aidan Grant’s goal with 1:07 left in the third period gave the trip-op of St. Rose/Donovan Catholic/Red Bank Catholic an upset win over the state-ranked Bulldogs. The third period saw great back and forth action with Brendan Shaughnessy giving Catholic a 2-1 lead with 4:23 to go. Dominick Panke tied the game at 2 with 2:33 to go before Grant’s game-winner. Catholic (6-5-1) gets a critical win as it looks to qualify for the state playoffs while RFH saw a six-game unbeaten streak snapped. Even though there was a maximum of 15 games and no state playoffs, it didn’t stop great players from around the state to shine and make the most of their limited opportunities. It’s Selection Saturday! Watch JSZ’s Last Dance Baseball Tournament Selection Show

Jersey Sports Zone reveals the brackets for the Last Dance Baseball Tournament. We’ve got all the matchups as 222 teams try to be the last team standing in Trenton on July 30. In case you missed our live show, check out all the brackets plus interviews with players and coaches around the state. The spring sports season was taken away from New Jersey high school athletes but thanks to an extraordinary effort by the New Jersey high school baseball community, sports is coming back and Garden State diamond squads get an incredible summer tournament for One Last Dance. JSZ presents the Last Dance Baseball Tournament Selection Show. Just like the NCAA Baseball Tournament, we have all the brackets, matchups and interviews with coaches and players from around the state. Click on the video below to watch the reveal of the 222 teams that will play in 32 different regions. Jersey Sports Zone’s coverage of the Last Dance Baseball Tournament is made possible by Sterling National Bank. We will have coverage of all nine days of the Tournament starting on July 14 with pool play around the state About the Last Dance Tournament 222 teams, 32 regions. Every team is guaranteed three games in modified pool play. Regions with four teams will play round robin with the best record advancing to the 32-team single elimination tournament that begins in week two. Eight team regions will have modified pool play in the first two days. Teams with 2-0 records will meet up on the final day to determine the region winner. While all the teams are varsity baseball players, the tournament is not associated with the NJSIAA and school uniforms will not be worn. Saint Rose guard commits to Lafayette

Abby Antognoli has been a fixture in the Saint Rose girls basketball machine over the last three years. The point guard has given a verbal commitment to play in the Patriot League. Watch her JSZ highlight reel now! Saint Rose point guard Abby Antognoli has given a verbal commitment to play Division I basketball at Lafayette. Antognoli averaged 10.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.4 steals a game in her junior season for a Purple Roses team that went 22-8. Abby has been a key contributor for one of New Jersey’s most powerful girls basketball programs over the last three years. The Colts ran the table from the beginning of the postseason to the end, scoring wins in the Gordon Cup and the Non-Public State Championship. The man at the center of it all was goaltender John Donohoe. The sophomore transfer from Pennsylvania had a .928 save percentage and made seven shutouts against the likes of Bergen Catholic, Delbarton and Don Bosco Prep. He is JSZ’s 2020 Player of the Year. It was Non-Public sectional final night in the Garden State. JSZ has you covered with all of the highlights and reaction! Roselle Catholic 59 Gill St. Bernard’s 58 | Boys | Non-Public B North Final For a third straight year, Roselle Catholic (3) faced Gill St. Bernard’s (1) in the Non-Public B North title game. Despite being the two-time reigning champs, Roselle Catholic was considered an underdog coming in and things seemed grim for the Lions late in the fourth quarter when they fell behind by ten. However, Xavier commit C.J. Wilcher would answer with three consecutive makes from beyond the arc for nine points and then the eventual go-ahead score on a free throw with 1:04 left in regulation. RC denied the Knights any potential buzzer-beater glory with a tough defensive stand in the closing moments to celebrate a third consecutive sectional championship. Wilcher finished with 22 points. Catholic made it a mission to get back to Jackson Liberty, and the Crusaders jumped on the Argonauts from the start to win their first South Jersey title since 2007. West Virginia commit Taj Thweatt led the with a game-high 28 points. Martin Anguelov added 17 points in the victory. Otega Oweh scored 27 points for Rutgers Prep in the loss. Saint Peter’s Prep got a 28 point effort from sophomore guard Mark Richardson and rallied from 9 down in the 4th quarter to force overtime. After knocking off Bishop Eustace and top-seeded Paul VI, St. Augustine hoisted the Non-Public A South sectional trophy after defeating two-time defending champions, Camden Catholic. Keith Palek caught fire for a team-high 18 points in the win. St. John Vianney 67 St. Rose 54 | Girls | Non-Public A South Final A rematch of last years Non-Public A South girls final, the Lady Lancers sought out to avenge last years loss. All season SJV has been dominant in the state of New Jersey and they were on their game once again as they withered the Purple Roses to capture the Sectional Title. Maddie St. Rose paced the Lancers with 21 points, 4 rebound and 4 assists while Katie Hill poured in 15 points and 7 rebounds. However, it was the contribution of Christina Whitehead that lifted the Lancers to victory as she netted 13 points in the second half, 9 of which came from beyond the three point line to stretch the lead and give SJV the victory. Despite the loss, Brynn Farrell of St. Rose surpassed the 2000 point mark for her career as she scored 21 points for the Purple Roses. Watch Friday 2.28 JSZ Playoff Hockey Highlights

The high school hockey playoffs are down to the quarterfinals following Friday’s action on the ice. JSZ has a pair of first round match-ups with Gloucester Catholic hosting Saint Rose and Rumson-Fair Haven battling Halvorsen Cup champ Mendham. Rumson-Fair Haven 6 Mendham 0 | Public “C” First Round The Bulldogs busted open a 2-0 game with four third period goals to earn a spot in the state quarterfinals and a much-anticipated showdown with fellow Shore Conference rival Manasquan. RFH got first period goals from Ryan Croddick and Sam Catalano to take a 2-0 lead. Ronan Hickey had a 16 save shutout and kept Mendham off the board setting the stage for four more RFH players to score in the third. St. John Vianney 70 St. Rose 63 | Girls | Shore Conference Semifinal The Lancers stay red-hot as they top the Purple Roses to reach its fifth-straight Shore Conference Tournament Final. Madison St. Rose turned in another star-making performance, scoring a game-high 36 points in the win. Florida-commit Brynn Farrell scored a team-high 32 points in the loss. St. Rose advances to Shore Conference Tournament Semifinals!

St. Rose 72 Rumson-Fair Haven 41 | Shore Conference Quarterfinals St. Rose advanced to the Shore Conference Tournament Semifinals with a dominating 72-41 win over Rumon-Fair Haven. The Purple Roses got out to an early 13 point lead after the first quarter before eventually leading by as many as 30. Lafayette College commit Makayla Andrews finished with 24 points. Block Party in O.T. Sends Midd. South to Handchen Cup Final

It seems like whenever there’s a big moment, Middletown South delivers. The Eagles took a 3-3 tie with the St. Rose/Donovan Catholic/RBC tri-op into overtime with a trip to the Handchen Cup finals on the line. After a flurry in the defensive zone, sophomore Nate Block blew past two defenders and scored the game-winning goal in O.T. Michael Ferlanti also scored twice for the Eagles, who will face top-seeded Rumson Fair Haven in the final on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Jersey Sports Arena in Wall.
