JSZ Camp Countdown: Preseason Football Previews for the 2020 Season
Football teams in New Jersey are currently preparing for the 2020 high school season in a preseason like no other. Jersey Sports Zone’s team of multimedia journalists are back pounding the pavement to cover the state and preview dozens of football programs leading up to Opening Day on Oct. 2. From now until then, our “JSZ Camp Countdown” series will highlight a new team daily in preparation for the season. Stop back in each day for a story on your favorite team, your crosstown rival or a team on the other end of New Jersey. Today’s JSZ Camp Countdown Feature: Timber Creek Major changes took place at Timber Creek this offseason as longtime head coach Rob Hinson joined the coaching staff at Rutgers. Brian Wright takes over for Hinson after eight seasons at Cherry Hill West. Wright now presides over one of the best rosters in the state highlighted by junior DE/WR Jihaad Campbell, and junior quarterback Donovan Leary. The Chargers also added senior running back, Temple-commit Johnny Martin, who transferred from Highland in the offseason. COVID-19 Safety is No. 1 Priority for NJ HS Football Programs
Just like in year’s past, New Jersey high school football programs are in the midst of summer workouts on the practice field. But there’s one distinct difference between this preseason and the dozens of preseasons before. The COVID-19 pandemic shut down high school sports in the Garden State back in March, and as the start of the high school football season creeps closer, so does the concern about whether or not there will be a season. But by the looks of it so far, coaches and training staffs in all corners of the state are working overtime to ensure player safety in an unprecedented time. JSZ’s team of MMJ’s visited training camps in North, Central and South Jersey to see how teams are adapting to the necessary changes in an effort to allow for a safe high school football season. Jersey Sports Zone’s annual “Camp Countdown” series will begin on Monday as we will preview dozens of teams from around the state during the lead-up to Week 1 on Oct. 2. Stay tuned every day for new features on different teams daily.
