Talia Schenck sets new field hockey single season goal record with 100
With a condensed junior season in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions, Lawrence’s Talia Schenck made up for lost time as she set a new field hockey single season goal record in 2021 with 97 before the Princeton University commit eventually became the first player in state history to eclipse 100 goals in a season. Schenck is also the third person in state history with more than 200 career goals. Schenck’s milestone night leads MCT semifinal comeback for Lawrence
Fourth seed Lawrence (15-2) defeated top seed Lawrenceville (9-5) 4-1 to advance to the Mercer County Tournament Final. Despite Big Red taking a 1-0 lead to begin the third quarter, Princeton University commit Talia Schenck answered back with four goals for Lawrence as they halt Lawrenceville’s hopes of a fifth straight MCT Title. Schenck became the first player in state history to eclipse 100 goals in a single season, she entered the match with 97. The Cardinals will take on third seed Princeton Day. West Windsor South Boys Win CVC Nail Biter
West Windsor-Plainsboro South 1 Lawrence 0 West Windsor-Plainsboro South (3-2-2) defeated Lawrence (4-3) 1-0 in a closely contested Colonial Valley Conference match up. Both teams with back to back losses coming in pushed the tempo early. South would take a 1-0 lead off an Aidan Grund penalty kick goal in the first four minutes of the game. From there it would be strong defense throughout, especially from Pirates goalie Shane Dowling who finished with 10 saves. It’s Selection Saturday! Watch JSZ’s Last Dance Baseball Tournament Selection Show
Jersey Sports Zone reveals the brackets for the Last Dance Baseball Tournament. We’ve got all the matchups as 222 teams try to be the last team standing in Trenton on July 30. In case you missed our live show, check out all the brackets plus interviews with players and coaches around the state. The spring sports season was taken away from New Jersey high school athletes but thanks to an extraordinary effort by the New Jersey high school baseball community, sports is coming back and Garden State diamond squads get an incredible summer tournament for One Last Dance. JSZ presents the Last Dance Baseball Tournament Selection Show. Just like the NCAA Baseball Tournament, we have all the brackets, matchups and interviews with coaches and players from around the state. Click on the video below to watch the reveal of the 222 teams that will play in 32 different regions. Jersey Sports Zone’s coverage of the Last Dance Baseball Tournament is made possible by Sterling National Bank. We will have coverage of all nine days of the Tournament starting on July 14 with pool play around the state About the Last Dance Tournament 222 teams, 32 regions. Every team is guaranteed three games in modified pool play. Regions with four teams will play round robin with the best record advancing to the 32-team single elimination tournament that begins in week two. Eight team regions will have modified pool play in the first two days. Teams with 2-0 records will meet up on the final day to determine the region winner. While all the teams are varsity baseball players, the tournament is not associated with the NJSIAA and school uniforms will not be worn. The New Jersey high school hockey season is in full swing and we’ve got a pair of mid-week games for you. Enjoy the coverage! Randolph 6 St. John Vianney 2 After falling short in the Public B state final last season, Randolph has been red hot in 2019. The Rams continued their electric play Monday by securing a blowout win over two-time Egan Cup champions, St. John Vianney. Ben Yurchuk and Matt Rogers each netted a pair of goals while captain Michael Sofia closed the game with a highlight goal. Tuesday is jam-packed with sectional semifinal action all over the state. Check back throughout the night for all of the amazing highlights! Clifton 1 Kearny 0 | North 1 Group 4 Semifinal This battle between two North Jersey county champions didn’t disappoint Tuesday as Clifton edged out Kearny. Amer Lukovic’s header in the second half proved to be the game winner in a tight, 80-minute matchup. The Mustangs are set to face No. 1 seed Ridgewood in the sectional final Friday. Christian Brothers 2 Notre Dame 1 | South Non-Public A Semifinal (2) Christian Brothers Academy defeated (3) Notre Dame 2-1 to advance to the South Non-Public A Tournament Final. Despite the Irish scoring in the first ten minutes CBA countered with goals from Brett Seig and Connor Anderko to lead 2-1 at halftime. Notre Dame continued to come close in the second act but was unable to connect on any shots thanks to goalie AJ Pinto who would finish with five saves. Goalkeeper Joe Bilgic was tremendous in net, racking up six saves to earn the shutout. Triton now hosts 9-seed Ocean City in the championship match on Friday. Rumson-Fair Haven opens state lacrosse playoffs with dominating effort
The boys state lacrosse playoffs are underway. JSZ’s road to the state championship begins in Rumson where RFH opened the South Group 2 bracket with a dominating effort against Lawrence. Rumson-Fair Haven 19 Lawrence 3 – South Group 2 First Round Drew Shaw led the Rumson offensive explosion with four goals and three assists and Sam Mannino added a three goal three assist effort as the Bulldogs scored 15 first half goals to earn a spot in the South Group 2 quarterfinals and a matchup with Shore Conference foe Holmdel. Friday night baseball takes the JSZ team around the Garden State. Holy Spirit and Buena battled to the end in South Jersey, Ridge gets a pitching gem for a home win over Phillipsburg, CBA breaks out the bats and a shutout from Evan Mahns, plus Lawrence and Steinert can’t settle a winner. Holy Spirit 7 Buena 6 Steven Petrosh hit a solo home run to break a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. Petrosh went 3-4 in the game. Jimmy Pasquale, Shane Solari, JJ Spots and Brandon Castellini also drove in runs for the Spartans in the win. Juice Del Valle drove in a pair of runs for the Chiefs in the loss. Friday’s matchup Colonial Valley Conference division matchup saw eight lead changes and nine innings, yet it still wasn’t enough to decide a winner. Lawrence took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning before Steinert would eventually go ahead 4-3 in the fourth. The slug fest would continue into extra innings and after the Spartans tied the game in the bottom of the ninth officials claimed it would be too dark to finish. A rainy Friday in New Jersey did not prevent some big time boys lacrosse matchups. JSZ brings you Manasquan’s dominant effort vs. CBA plus a big win for the Lawrence Cardinals against Mercer County rival Steinert Manasquan 15 CBA 4 Ryan Anderson scored a career high five goals and Canyon Birch added four more to his staggering career total (290) as the Warriors stake claim as the undisputed top team in the Shore Conference with a home win. Manasquan used a seven goal second quarter to race out to a 10-2 halftime lead and controlled the game for all four quarters. JSZ has the highlights from the Shore Conference showdown: Lawrence 8 Steinert 6 The Lawrence Cardinals and the Steinert Spartans have gone head to head many times before. The Cardinals are two-time defending CVC Patriot Division Champs, and defeated Steinert in a couple of games last year to claim the title. The Cardinals walked away with the win on Friday night after a back and forth first half of play. Lawrence’s Alex Everman scored the game-high with a hat trick. Justin Krisak scored the second highest with two goals. Emet Baria, Jude Bidle and Grayson Dalton each scored one goal. The Cardinals improved their record to 4-1, and will take on Monroe on Tuesday. A special night in Rumson! Rumson-Fair Haven’s senior night was a dream come true for Bulldogs manager Jack Velcamp. The 4-foot-2 senior, who represented the United States at the World Dwarf games in basketball, got to achieve his dream of suiting up for the Budllogs. Velcamp got the start and made this layup to bring the house down. JSZ’s Jay Cook will tell the inspiring story in detail on Friday in JSZ. For now, watch the big basket and see the incredible emotion! Ocean Twp. 61 Red Bank Catholic 53 At the start of the fourth quarter we saw Ocean Township take a 36-32 lead over the Casey’s. However, Red Bank Catholic quickly rallied back to regain the lead in the opening minutes. As RBC led for most of the fourth, The Spartan’s Andrew Seager managed to tie the game at 47 in the closing seconds to send it to over time. Red Bank Catholic was no match for OT’s scoring in extra time as the Casey’s were outscored 14-6. Seager with 26 points in the upset victory helps propel Ocean Township to 11-8 on the year. Trinity Hall 77 Keyport 50 16-0 Trinity Hall put their undefeated record to the test on Thursday evening as they took on a 9-6 Keyport, a team that has had its fair share of success in the Shore Conference this year. The Monarchs led Keyport 33-19 at the end of the first half, but when Keyport finally found momentum one of their go-to players had to leave due to injury. This caused the Monarchs to go on a scoring frenzy in the third including Nicole Ventura who along with her teammates Bridget Andrew and Caitlin Wingertzahn finished with a double double to put this one out of reach early in the fourth. Dan Finn Classic – Jersey City Armory Hudson Catholic 67 Patrick School 59 Louis King had 26 points and seven boards as the Hawks pulled away in the fourth quarter after trailing 46-43 at the end of three quarters. King had 16 in the first half and his thunderous dunk early in the 4th started the Hawks quest to beat a Celtics team that handed them two losses last year. Valdir Manuel was outstanding for the Patrick School with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Luther Muhammad added 15 and Jahvon Quinerly had 10 points and 8 assists for Hudson Catholic who are now 6-3. North Hunterdon came into this game with a 4-4 record, but right out of the gate the Lions were moving the ball well and had Westfield 40-28 by halftime. Pemberton opens NJ football slate with last second win
Pemberton 20 Lawrence 17 Tyshene Williams caught a game winning TD pass with nine seconds left in the game and sealed a victory with an interception as Pemberton came back to top Lawerence 20-17 in a thrilling final minute. Deon McLean’s 5-yard touchdown gave Lawerence a 17-13 lead with 48 seconds left, but Pemberton was able to march down the field and set the stage for the game winner. Sophomore quarterback Octaveous Sharkey fired a perfect slant to Williams with nine ticks left on the clock.
