Princeton High School’s varsity soccer team played for a greater cause in 2023.
The Little Tigers celebrated a Group 4 state championship win on Saturday and the sidelines were covered with one familiar phrase: #FreeEvan.
Evan Gershkovich, a former PHS star soccer player, has been in national headlines for the majority of the year. Gershkovich is a Wall Street Journal journalist and has been detained in Russia since March 2023 after being arrested on espionage charges. Both the WSJ and the U.S. government both vehemently deny those charges.
Gershkovich captained Princeton’s last state championship soccer team in 2009. Fourteen years later, this year’s championship group is paying it forward by making sure he comes home safely.
