The sudden and tragic deaths of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau have shaken the hockey communities both near and far from New Jersey.
NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and his younger brother, Matthew, 29, were both tragically killed on the evening of August 29 in New Jersey. The brothers were riding bicycles at approximately 8:30 p.m. in Salem County Jersey when they were fatally struck by a drunk driver, according to New Jersey State Police.
The Gaudreau brothers lived and breathed hockey. Johnny got his start at Gloucester Catholic and evolved into a star forward who played 11 seasons with the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets. He was an electric offensive dynamo who appeared in 763 NHL games and won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy after the 2016-17 season.
Matthew Gaudreau was continuing the family legacy of supporting Gloucester Catholic hockey. Until his death, he served as the Rams’ head coach for the last two seasons.
