8:30 Hun | Mid-Atlantic Prep League

Hun coming off a 9-0 season will look to Texas A&M commit Miles O’Neil to lead their offense at quarterback in 2023. O’Neil is just one of the Raider’s many high profile college prospects that also include Michigan commit Owen Wafle and four star recruit Kamar Archie that holds interests from Clemson and Georgia, but the list of talent at the national powerhouse goes on.

JSZ’ Nery Rodriguez has previews Hun:

8/30: Phillipsburg | Big Central Conference

Phillipsburg stunned their fellow Group 5 opponents in 2022, going a perfect 8-0 in the regular season with an offense that averaged 30 points per game behind sophomore quarterback Jett Genovese. The Stateliners made it to the North 2, Group 5 Final, falling to West Orange, but after winning their famous Thanksgiving game vs. Easton to cap off the year there was still much to celebrate and look forward to in P-Burg.

JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez previews Phillipsburg:

8/29: Rutherford | North Jersey Interscholastic Conference

The two-time defending NJIC champions are ready to rumble in 2023. Rutherford returns 18 of 22 starters from last year’s team and looks to have the talent to challenge for a third-straight conference title this season. Beyond that, though, is head coach Steve Dunn’s desire to “get over the hump” this fall considering the Bulldogs are 0-2 in sectional finals in each of the last two seasons. With North Carolina commit Ryan Ward leading the way, Rutherford will have be a very tough out.

JSZ’s Jay Cook previews the Bulldogs:

8/29: Marlboro | Shore Conference

The Mustangs won a playoff game for just the third time in program in history thanks to a dramatic come from behind fourth quarter rally against Washington Township.  Matt Cassidy is one of the state’s top two way players and will look to build upon last ear’s 6-4 mark.  Marlboro opens the season this Saturday at home against St. John Vianney.

JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the preview of the 2023 Mustangs:

Jersey Sports Zone’s coverage of Marlboro is brought to you by Ramapo College

8/29: Old Tappan | Super Football Conference

The Golden Knights brought golden hardware back home to northern Bergen County after a magical 2022 season. Old Tappan ended the year at 12-1 and defeated Delsea to capture the first Group 3 state championship in New Jersey history. Head coach Brian Dunn, who enters his 24th season, has made it a point to have this team turn the page coming into this fall. Old Tappan will once again be talented as Duke commit Jack Small and Evan Brooks return to star on both sides of the ball.

JSZ’s Jay Cook previews the 2023 Golden Knights:

8/28: Delbarton | Super Football Conference

A 6-6 year does not quite define the year Delbarton had. The Green Wave started on a three game losing streak before winning four in a row and pulled off a shocking 35-12 road playoff win over St. Peter’s Prep at Caven Point before an exit from State Champions Bergen Catholic in the Non-Public A Semifinals. With playmakers like Navy Lacrosse commit Ryan Trafford, who rushed for over 1600 yards and 20 total touchdowns returning, Delbarton could be an interesting Non-Public team in the mix come playoff time.

JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez previews the Green Wave:

Thank you to Jag-One Physical Therapy for sponsoring our Delbarton coverage.

8/28: Hillside | Big Central Conference

9-2 may sound may sound like a good season but for Hillside Head Coach Barris Grant, it was just another year if it didn’t involve hardware. The Comets made it to the North 1, Group 3 Final, falling to eventual Regional Champs, Old Tappan. Hillside. Coach Grant will lean on seniors leaders like lineman Diego Rodriguez, a UConn commit on game day.

JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez caught up with the Comets at BCC Media Day:

8/28: Ramapo | Super Football Conference

The Raiders are one of North Jersey’s most successful programs of the last 20 years and will look to build on a rich tradition in 2023. Landon DePrima, James Magerko, Zach Schnorrbusch and Jack D’Avanzo are the ones in command of this team this fall.

JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story from MetLife Stadium:

JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez previews the Red Raiders:

8/24: Wayne Valley | Super Football Conference

2022 was a season of ups and downs for Wayne Valley as the Indians went undefeated in the regular season, but would get a late bounce in the North 2, Group 4 Semifinals to finish 10-1. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez previews Wayne Valley:

Jersey Sports Zone’s coverage of Southern Regional is brought to you by Ramapo College.

8/24: Linden | Big Central Conference

5-5 could be considered a good year when you take into account that in Linden’s second game of the season the Tigers suffered tragedy when sophomore Xavier McClain was taken to the hospital following a hit. In few weeks time McClain would pass away and the same week Linden would take the field to earn a 13-0 victory over Perth Amboy. Head Coach Al Chiola and the players returning from that team reflect on how the experience brought them closer.

JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez caught up with the Tigers at BCC Media Day:

Thank you to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (Rahway) for sponsoring our Linden coverage.

The Griffins are coming off a 6-4 record in 2022 and will look to take a step forward with plenty of talent returning this season. Senior Todd Lambertson is back under center for his second season at quarterback. Fordham commit Adam Yevchak leads a veteran offensive line that returns four starters. JSZ’s coverage of Donovan Catholic is brought to you by Community Medical Center in Toms River.

8/23: South Brunswick | Big Central Conference

The return of coach Joe Goerge to South Brunswick would see the Vikings go 5-5 in his first season back with the program after a brief coaching hiatus from 2019-2021. The once Middlesex County power opened with two losses before winning three in a row, losing three in a row and finally ending with back to back victories to cap things off with a South, Group 5 Title in the consolation playoff tournament. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez previews the Vikings:

Thank you to Princeton Orthopedic Associates for sponsoring our South Brunswick coverage.

8/23: Westwood | Super Football Conference

The Cardinals are laying it all out on the line this fall. Westwood went 11-1 and won a sectional championship last season, but a tough loss to Caldwell in the Group 2 state semifinal left this group yearning for more. Armed with a talented defense that logged six shutouts, a high-caliber offense guided by senior dual-threat QB Robbie Carcich and a first year head coach in Bobby Guy, Westwood has some serious state championship aspirations this season.

JSZ’s Jay Cook previews Westwood from SFC Media Day at MetLife Stadium:

The Cougars coming off a 7-3 year will look to senior quarterback Michael Schmelzer to lead the way in 2023. Northern Highlands has won three-consecutive sectional championships (not counting the COVID-shortened 2020 season) and this battle-tested group wants more hardware in 2023. Northern Highlands was the runner-up in Group 4 last season and they have goals of getting back to the state final. Danny Smiechowski is back after a breakout season where he set program receiving records and dominated on defense. A talented core of senior leaders hope 2023 is a different story. Syracuse commit Jayden Brown, Georgia commit Jordan Thomas and Monmouth commit Lamont Lester headline a talented defense, while Logan Bush returns to anchor the offense after rushing for over 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns a season ago.

8/12: Bergen Catholic | Super Football Conference

There’s no question about it – Bergen Catholic is established as New Jersey’s elite high school football program. The Crusaders capped off their incredible 2022 season with a lopsided win over rival Don Bosco, giving the program it’s second-straight Non-Public A championship. Georgia commit Nyier Daniels, Rutgers commit Kaj Sanders, West Virginia commit Elijah Kinsler and national 2025 recruit Quincy Porter are just some of the top-end players on this roster looking to drive Bergen Catholic to another state title.

JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story from Oradell:

8/11: Red Bank Catholic | Shore Conference

The Caseys are coming off a 10-2 season that saw them reach MetLife Stadium and the Non-Public “B” state championship game for a second straight year.  After falling to Depaul 19-17 in the finals, the Caseys quest to return to the title game brings its toughest schedule in program history starting with nationally ranked Bergen Catholic coming to Red Bank for the season opener.  With Stanford commit Emmanuel Ross at WR and Pitt pledge Davin Brewton at linebacker, the Caseys will have plenty of challenges both out of conference and in the Shore’s American Division.

JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis previews the Caseys:

8/11: Mainland | West Jersey Football League

Mainland captured its first sectional title since 2008 last season, but the sting of a state semifinal loss is fueling the Stangs in 2023. Mainland features a small but talented senior class, which includes two-way standouts Jamie Tyson (WR/DB), Cohen Cook (RB/LB), JJ Sinclair (LB/RB), Stephen Ordille (RB/DB), Hunter Watson (LB/TE) and Zach Hodges (OL/DL). Sophomore QB John Franchini returns under center for the Stangs.

8/11: St. Joe’s (Mont.) | Super Football Conference

Is 2023 finally the year for the Green Knights? Four full seasons have gone by since their last state championship, but Joe’s may have the players to get over the hump this fall. Star running back Yasin Willis (Pitt commit) is the motor on this team and eyes his third-straight 1,000 yard season. Joe’s will have to improve defensively if they want to be playing in the final game of the season and there’s excitement that this group is improved across the board.

8/10: Rumson-Fair Haven | Shore Conference

The Bulldogs entered the 2022 playoffs with a 4-4 record and peaked at the best possible time that resulted in the school’s 7th section football title and a spot in the first ever Group 2 state championship game.  RFH will once again play in the Shore Conference’s top division and look to take the final step to win a state title led by the dynamic passing duo of QB Owen O’Toole and WR Nick Rigby along with another vaunted defensive unit.

8/10: Clifton | Super Football Conference

After a crushing loss in the Group 5 Bowl Championship in 2021, last season would see Clifton take a step back to finish 5-5 behind a sophomore quarterback, a tough schedule and lack of varsity experience. The Mustangs reload with a veteran team under Head Coach Ralph Cinque that looks to return the program to that high standard of success.

8/10: St. Augustine | West Jersey Football League

After a rare 1-4 start last season, the Hermits rattled off five straight wins before falling to Don Bosco in the Non-Public A state playoffs. The 2023 St. Augustine squad is still relatively young, but will count on several seniors in key spots. That list includes QB Ryan Gambill, DL/OL Vincent Isom, and ATH Tristan McLeer. Junior RB Julian Turney projects as one of South Jersey’s top running backs. St. Augustine once again faces a tough schedule, which includes an opener on the road against Donovan Catholic.

8/10: Passaic Tech | Super Football Conference

Stifling defense helped power the Bulldogs on their push to reach the Group 5 state championship game a year ago. As the calendar turns over to 2023, PCTI hopes every unit on their team follows last year’s defense on the path to realizing its full potential. Twin brothers Trashon and Travon Dye – a pair of Syracuse commits – are both two-way threats and have emerged as the lifeblood to this talented Passaic Tech squad. A revamped offense behind QB Ma’Kao Taylor, WR Jovan Tyrell and ATH Cashmere Jones have the Bulldogs excited for Week 0 and beyond.

8/9: Seton Hall Prep | Super Football Conference

The Pirates are hoping a unique start of the 2023 season will catapult their team to the next level. An overseas trip to play in Dublin, Ireland on Aug. 25th is a rare and exciting opportunity for head coach Bill Fitzgerald and his squad. Seton Hall Prep is aiming for more consistency this season and they will lean on Ohio State commit Jaylen McClain to be the leader on and off the field for a hungry team. Offensively, fans can expect more cohesion as QB Liam Londergan and WR Julius Vicari will make up one of top all-senior pass catching combinations in North Jersey.

8/9: Mountain Lakes | Super Football Conference

The Herd reached the first ever NJ Group 1 state championship game and is looking to take that final step after a tremendous 11-2 season. Ben Miniter is back running the Wing-T offense and returning All-State linebacker Marco Dzamba leads the defense.

8/9: Manchester Twp. | Shore Conference

The Hawks are digging in for the 2023 campaign as they look to make a playoff run for the first time in 13 years. Manchester Township returns nine starters on each side of the football and has the pieces in place to make some waves in the Shore Conference Liberty Division in year two under head coach Tommy Farrell. Seniors Josh Love and Manny Swain, juniors Dante Mortellite and Aidan Lunn, plus sophomore Kurtis Mayer will be among the players to watch for the Hawks this season.

8/9: Millville | West Jersey Football League

The Thunderbolts are on the brink of a true dynasty after winning the inaugural Group 4 state title in 2022, and a regional title in 2021. Millville returns more than enough talent to make another run at the ultimate prize in 2023. Senior QB Jacob Zamot led the state in passing a year ago. His top targets include highly-recruited junior WR Lotzeir Brooks, and senior Syracuse commit Ta’Ron Haile. Junior Marcus Offer will help anchor the offensive and defensive lines, while senior RB Na’eem Sharp should see plenty of touches.

8/9: East Orange | Super Football Conference

After going 13-0 and finishing as North, Group 5 Champions a season prior, East Orange went 4-6 last year. Head Coach John Jacob in his second year will have a more experienced group returning that hopes to bring another title to Essex County.
