The Road to the Rock continues in the hockey state playoffs on Tuesday. JSZ brings you two games from the opening round with wins for Hopewell Valley and Middletown North. We’ll continue to post highlights all this week leading up to next week’s state quarterfinals Hopewell Valley 7 Kearny 0 | Public “A” Opening Round Hopewell Valley (12) kicked off the opening round of the NJSIAA Boys Ice Hockey Public A Tournament with a dominating 7-0 win over Kearny (21). Michael Boyer and Trent Demers both found net twice for the Bulldogs. We’ve got a pair of Friday night hockey games on Jersey Sports Zone. Robbinsville picked up its 12th win of the season with a win over Hopewell Valley plus Freehold Boro picked up its fifth straight victory thank to a 4-2 win over Red Bank Regional at Middletown Ice World. Watch the highlights now! Robbinsville 5 Hopewell Valley 2 Robbinsville improves to (12-2) following a 5-2 victory over Hopewell Valley (8-5-1). The Ravens got ahead 4-2 entering the third following an early hat trick from senior Mitchell Ducalo. It was Ducalo’s second hat trick in two games. Robert Grimes added the other two scores. We’ve got another week of hockey! JSZ brings you plenty of puck coverage from rinks in Essex, Mercer and Monmouth counties. Stay tuned with us throughout the night for the highlights! Rumson-Fair Haven 4 Jackson Liberty 0 Ryan Croddick scored a pair of goals as RFH knocks off a 9-win Lions squad on Monday night. RFH scored three goals in the span of 3:45 in the second period to notch the win. The Bulldogs outshot the Lions 30-9. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the highlights from the Red Bank Armory: Hopewell Valley 5 St. Rose 5 St. Rose (6-0-4) had their undefeated season put to the test in Monday’s matchup with 7-4 Hopewell Valley. Following two early goals from Sean Grant, Hopewell battled back to cut the lead to 3-2 in the second period. However, as both teams traded four goals in the final two minutes St. Rose led 5-4 going into the third. With 1:31 left in regulation Roman Vitolo picking up his second score tied the game late and unfortunately there was not enough time for a thrilling conclusion. Westfield 2 Livingston 2 A McInnis Division showdown in the NJIIHL ended in a tie. Both Westfield and Livingston traded in the final 17 minutes of this game as the contest ends in a draw. New Jersey Devils Honor JSZ’s Top December Goals
For the third straight year, the New Jersey Devils are honoring the top goals captured by JSZ cameras. On a night when the Devils upset Tampa Bay to end the Lightning’s 10-game win streak, goals from Hopewell Valley, Randolph and Middletown North were showcased at the Prudential Center. Prior to faceoff, Devils center John Hayden met with JSZ’s top goal scorers outside the locker room and watched the top goals and gave his commentary. Watch a special night for this NJ high school hockey trio at the Rock: Each month, we post the top goals captured by JSZ cameras. The winner of our poll gets one of our 5 spots for the honor from the New Jersey Devils. JSZ and the Devils staff choose the other four top goals. Princeton hockey stays perfect!
Princeton 12 Hopewell Valley 4 Princeton remains undefeated in the 2019-2020 season following a dominating 12-4 victory over Hopewell Valley. The Tigers would lead 5-0 after the first period following two early scores from Captain Aiden Trainor. Rocco Salvato would add a pair goals also to help Princeton improve to 9-0-1. The hockey highlights keep coming and JSZ has in-depth coverage from three Tuesday night games: CBA vs. Delbarton, St. Rose vs. Middletown South and Princeton vs. Hopewell Valley. Check out all the highlights right now! CBA 5 Delbarton 2 Delbarton’s 11-month unbeaten streak over Gordon Conference foe Christian Brothers Academy has come to an end. CBA was unstoppable Tuesday night as four different goal scorers — Evan Brown (2), Zach Wagnon, Kyle Contessa and Simon Fitzgerald — all lit the lamp in a rousing win for the Colts. Sophomore transfer goaltender John Donohoe stopped 30 of 32 shots in the win. We’re nearing the end of the first week of the hockey season for most high schools teams and different squads around the state are stepping up early. The Big Blue have reeled off three straight wins with at least four goals scored in each contest. Watch 11.13 JSZ Girls Soccer State Semifinal Highlights
The state championship matchups are set in New Jersey high school girls soccer. The weather forced games to go from neutral sites to home fields around the Garden State. JSZ has action from four state semifinals. Hunterdon Central 1 Eastern 0 | Group 4 Semifinal Emily Mason’s header on a corner kick from Maddy Brennan in the 13th minute was the game’s lone goal as the Red Devils avenge last year’s overtime loss to the Vikings and end a 42 game unbeaten streak by the current #1 ranked team in the national polls. Mason, a junior committed to Rutgers, was able to crash the net after Brennan’s corner hit off the crossbar. Hunterdon Central will play Scotch Plains-Fanwood in the state title game this Saturday at Kean University. Freshman Kiersten Brown also scored for Wall in the win. Wall will face Parsippany Hills in the Group 2 final on Saturday. Shore Regional 6 Audubon 0 | Group 1 Semifinal Julia Eichenbaum had a hat trick, the seventh of her senior season as Shore avenged a loss to the Green Wave in last year’s state semifinal. Barbara Grimm got the scoring started in the 5th minute and Lauren Sapanaro gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 halftime lead. Sydney Sears had three assists including a cross to Meli Pekmezian to make it a 3-0 game before Eichenbaum closed out the scoring with three straight to give her 34 for the year. Shore will face Mountain Lakes in the Group 1 state championship this Saturday. Ocean City 1 Hopewell Valley 0 | Group 3 Semifinal After a dominating 23-1-1 season Ocean City advanced to their first ever Group 3 Final with a close 1-0 win over Hopewell Valley. The Red Raiders got a lift from Summer Reimet who found net in the 70th minute for the games only score. Ocean City more aggressive on offense won the shots on goal 14-8 and goalie Abbey Fenton finished with eight saves. They will take on Rampo at Kean University on 11/16. There was plenty of hardware to hand on on Thursday, with sectional champions hoisting trophies all around the state. Check back throughout the night for all of the highlights and reaction! Seton Hall Prep 5 Pingry 3 | Boys Non-Public A North Final The term “instant classic” gets thrown around quite often after a wild game, but it couldn’t fit a single game this season any better than Thursday afternoon in West Orange. Seton Hall Prep junior striker Lucas Ross netted a second-half hat trick to power his Pirates to their seventh sectional championship in program history. Pingry, who defeated top-seeded Delbarton to reach the final, fell short late in the second half. St. Augustine 1 Christian Brothers 0 | Boys Non-Public A South Final The Hermits captured their first sectional title since 2010, beating the four-time defending sectional champion Colts. Owen Kitch headed in a goal off of an assist from Antonio Matos in the first half for the only tally of the game. St. Augustine keeper Anthony Libero earned the clean sheet in net. Devyn Shapiro scored a few minutes later when her header deflected off of a Mariners defender and in. Then Rutgers commit Riley Tiernan scored off of a pass from McGroarty late in the first half. Hopewell Valley 4 Allentown 2 | Girls Group 3 Central Final A year after tasting defeat to Brick Township in the Central Jersey Group 3 final, Hopewell Valley avenged its loss to take home its first sectional title since 2016. The Bulldogs were able to beat Allentown 4-2 thanks to a big day from captain Nicola Mosionek, who would finish with two goals and an assist. A tight, defensive first half led to an all-Bulldogs second half as Haddonfield takes home the Group 2 South title. The week begins with huge sectional semifinal games all over the state. Check back throughout the night to find out which teams punched tickets to Thursday’s sectional finals! Eastern 2 Shawnee 1 (OT) | South Group 4 Semifinal It was the fourth meeting of the season between the Vikings and the Renegades, and the nation’s number one team survived and advanced. Rutgers commit Riley Tiernan finished off a long run with a golden goal for Eastern in overtime. Brooke Steel gave Shawnee the lead early in the second half, before St. Joseph’s commit Sara Brocious tied it up for the Vikings with 17 minutes left to force OT. Undefeated Eastern (24-0) will host Toms River North for the sectional title on Thursday. Hopewell Valley 2 Burlington Township 1 |Central Group 3 Semifinal Hopewell Valley (1) defeated Burlington Township (5) 2-1 Monday evening to advance to the Central Jersey Group 3 Sectional Final. Despite falling behind 1-0 at halftime, Hopewell would tie the game in the second half with a goal from Charlotte Hare that would send the game into overtime. The Pioneers fell behind 14-8 at halftime, but in the second act Somerville with 4 interceptions and touchdowns from Ethan Hillman, Jaimen Bryant and Cookie Desiderio were able to shutdown a Rahway team that had outscored opponents 242-51 coming in. Eric Bryant finished with three interceptions while brother Jaimen had two takeaways along with his score. RBC jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on TD runs by Elijah Jules and Billy Guidetti. Manalapan trailed 14-10 at the half and took the lead on Johnson’s 3rd quarter run. Down by six, RBC drove to the 18-yard line before an attempted spike to stop the clock was ruled a fumble ending hopes of a Caseys dramatic comeback. We’ll have highlights from Notre Dame’s thrilling double-OT win along with a North/South battle in Union County. Notre Dame 2 Hopewell Valley 1 (2OT) Tuesday’s much anticipated Colonial Valley Conference matchup between Notre Dame and Hopewell Valley more than lived up to expectations. Both teams entered 8-2 and after one half of play there would be no score. Bordentown transfer Aiden Hoenisch would draw first blood for the Irish at the 50’ mark before Hopewell countered to tie it approaching the end of regulation. In double overtime Danny Bensch would find net for Notre Dame to bring home a W on a golden goal. (5) Don Bosco Prep 11 (4) Bergen Catholic 10 – Non-Public A Quarterfinal Don Bosco Prep had revenge on their minds — the Ironmen lost a 7-6 heartbreaker to Bergen Catholic in early April. That left Don Bosco seeking revenge, and it was exacted by freshman Koleton Marquis when he scored the game-winning goal with only :14 seconds remaining in regulation to push Don Bosco Prep into the sectional semifinals. (4) Westfield 9 (5) Bridgewater-Raritan 8 – Boys – North Group 4 Quarterfinal Round No. 20 in the NJ Top 20 Westfield advanced to the North Group 4 semifinal round with a tight 9-8 win over Bridgewater-Raritan. The Blue Devils got ahead early to take a 6-3 lead at halftime. However, Bridgewater-Raritan thanks to a pair scores from Jarrett Fought in the third cut it to an 8-6 deficit entering the fourth. The Panthers would eventually come within one score, but Westfield was able to hold their ground on defense and hang on for the victory. Devon McLane and Jake Engelke both finished with hat tricks. Notre Dame Claims Ninth Mercer County Crown
No. 13 Notre Dame 9 Hopewell Valley – Mercer County Tournament Final No. 13 in the NJ Top 20 Notre Dame won its ninth Mercer County Tournament Title with a 9-3 win over fourth seeded Hopewell Valley. After falling behind 3-1, the third seed Irish opened things up in the bottom of the fifth inning off a Jake Kmiec RBI single to eventually go ahead 7-3. Kmiec would end the day 3-3 with 2 RBI’s including two triples. MVP honors went to West Point commit Robbie Buecker who after giving up two runs early on buckled down to end the evening with three hits allowed and six strikeouts. Hopewell Valley baseball advances to Mercer County Semifinals!
Fourth seed Hopewell Valley advanced to the Mercer County Tournament Semifinals with a 3-1 victory over fifth seed Allentown. The Bulldogs went to work early going ahead 3-0 following an error and a 2 RBI single from Tony St. John. Pitcher Dylan Joyce cruised into the seventh inning allowing just three hits and accumulated three strikeouts. However when down to their last out with a man on second Allentown scored on an RBI from Jack Nitti before Hopewell would force a ground out to second to end the game. We have everything from extra innings walk-offs, to close games down to the wire, to a pair of blowout wins. Enjoy the highlights! Hopewell Valley 3 Robbinsville 2 (10 innings) Seven innings wasn’t enough for Colonial Valley Conference division rivals Hopewell Valley and Robbinsville. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first a pitching error allowed Robbinsville to tie the game in the top of the third. We’d remain at that score until the tenth when the Ravens scored on a sacrifice fly. Following a double play in the bottom of the inning Hopewell Valley was down to it’s last out with the bases loaded. Manasquan 18 Ocean 3 – Boys Lacrosse Canyon Birch is rewriting record books. Birch broke the Shore Conference all-time career goals record with an eight-goal game in Manasquan’s season-opener against Ocean. The record, which was 274 goals, was previously held by Southern’s Dylan Jinks. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the highlights from a record-setting day: Hopewell Valley 7 East Brunswick 6 – Boys Lacrosse Hopewell Valley picked up its second straight win of the season with a close 7-6 victory over East Brunswick. Spencer Bell and Kenny Abey found net twice in the opening quarter to put the Bulldogs ahead 4-1. East Brunswick would score two goals of their own in the second to cut the lead to 4-3 at halftime. After taking a four goal lead in the third, the Bears rallied back to cut it to 7-6 in the closing seconds of the game. Unfortunately there was not be enough time remaining to force overtime. Robbinsville 10 Hopewell Valley 8 – Boys Lacrosse Robbinsville started the lacrosse season 1-0 after an en exciting 10-8 win over Hopewell Valley. It’s the girls turn to take center stage as JSZ brings you three sectional soccer semifinal battles. We’ve got Middletown North in North 2 Group 3, an impressive effort in South Jersey by Delsea, plus Burlington Township tangling with Hopewell Valley Hopewell Valley 1 Burlington Township 0 – Central Group 3 Semifinals Tuesday’s matchup in the Central Group 3 Semifinals between Burlington Township and Hopewell Valley was an 80 minute defensive battle. Despite coming off an upset win against No. 1 ranked Allentown in the previous round, Hopewell Valley was able to limit the Falcons thanks to a 10 save effort by sophomore Braylee Walters. Late in the first Emily Cooke scored the only goal of the game for the fifth seeded Bulldogs to send them to the sectional final where they will face second seed Brick Township on 11/9. The girls state soccer tournament is underway and JSZ brings you four first-round matchups plus we check in on the number one high school soccer team in the nation, the St. Benedict’s Gray Bees boys who played in the Prep state semifinals. St. Benedict’s Prep 7 Lawrenceville 0 | Boys Prep A Semifinals A four-point performance from Celio Pompeu and a two-goal game from Ronald Mafunzwaini pushed St. Benedict’s Prep to a 7-0 win over Lawrenceville in the Satte Prep A semifinals. The Gray Bees are ranked as the consensus No. 1 ranked high school soccer team in America. They’ll play the Prep A state finals on Nov. 1 at 4:00 p.m. at Riverfront Park in Newark against the winner of Pennington vs. Hun, played Tuesday night. Sunshine Football Classic 2018 Jersey Sports Zone was at TCNJ where the best in central Jersey football met one last time this year for the 22nd Annual Sunshine Game Classic. The All-Star game brings together the best from Mercer, Burlington, Hunderton and Monmouth county showcasing talent from the central part of the garden state. The East team was led by long time Nottingham Head Coach Jon Adams who went up against a tough Trenton influenced defense behind Greg Hyslop. Allentown – 12 Jackson Liberty – 4 | Central Jersey Group 3 Semi-Finals Allentown High School is on a quest to defend it’s Central Jersey Group 3 Championship from 2017, and the 3rd seeded RedBird’s latest test was on the road at Jackson Liberty. 8 of 9 batters in the Allentown lineup reached base at least once, as the RedBirds posted 12 runs on 11 hits and came away with a commanding 12-4 win. Hopewell tops rival Nottingham 4-2 for first ever County Title!
After rain delays postponed the 2018 Mercer County Tournament two weeks fans were finally treated to an epic 4-2 showdown between NJ Top 20 teams (3) Nottingham and top seeded Hopewell Valley. The Bulldogs got behind Ace pitcher Andy Blake who would keep the game scoreless through four innings before scoring the first run of the game. Following a 2 RBI double from Liam Cleary, Blake then drove in a run to extend the lead to 4-0. After surrendering a 2R HR to Nottingham’s Nick Houghton he would also buckle down for the last six outs and finish the day with 7 strike outs to lead Hopewell Valley to its first ever County Title. Hopewell Valley baseball takes down rival Nottingham to reach Semifinals!
(4) Hopewell Valley 9 (5) Nottingham 2 – Central Group 3 Quarterfinals It was the match up everyone in the Colonial Valley Conference has been waiting for all season. Originally scheduled as the Mercer County Tournament Title Game, rain forced two of NJ’s Top 20 teams to square off in the Central Group 3 quarterfinal round instead. Fourth seed Hopewell Valley got ahead early following a six run fourth inning started by Drew Brodine. Nottingham would counter with a pair of runs on the board in the fifth, but the Bulldogs repeated their performance in the bottom of the inning to hold on for a 9-2 win. (8) Somerville 9 (12) Hopewell Valley 8 – South Jersey Group 2 Semifinals – Boys TJ Sanchez scored two of his three goals in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner with 1:13 left in the game as the Pioneers outscored Hopewell Valley 3-0 in the 4th quarter to get to the South Jersey Group 2 Finals. Nolan Crognale had a stellar six-goal effort for the Bulldogs and his sixth tally gave Hopewell Valley an 8-6 lead after three quarters. But Somerville’s defense did not yield any goals in the fourth and the Pioneers will face the winner of Rumson-Fair Haven and Wall for the South Jersey Group 2 championship. Hopewell Valley Boys Lacrosse stuns Robbinsville to reach Group 2 Semifinals
(12) Hopewell Valley 6 (4) Robbinsville 5 – South Group 2 Quarterfinal The first meeting between twelfth seed Hopewell Valley and fourth seed Robbinsville ended with the Bulldogs suffering a 16-4 defeat. This time around in the South Group 2 quarterfinals they came out with a different mindset to take a 4-2 lead over Robbinsville at halftime. The Ravens would come roaring back to eventually take a 5-4 lead, but Hopewell answered right back to go ahead 6-5 and would finish the upset thanks to goalie Harry Meredith, who finished with 14 saves. The North Stars relied on Monmouth University bound Ace Nick Houghton at the mound. Houghton served up 10 strike outs and allowed just 2 earned runs on 5 hits on top of an RBI blast in the bottom of the sixth to send Nottingham to the Mercer County Tournament Championship Game. Hudson Catholic – 95 Marist – 43 Hudson County Tournament Quarterfinals Luther Muhammad poured in a season high 32 points while grabbing 8 boards, and Villanova bound point guard Jahvon Quinerly dished out 11 assists to go along with 15 points as Hudson Catholic came away with a 95-43 win over Marist in the Hudson County Tournament QuarterFinals. Notre Dame 91 Steinert 70 – Mercer County Tournament Quarterfinals Saturday’s game between fourth seed Notre Dame and fifth seed Steinert was the match up most knew was inedible at some point in the Mercer County Tournament. These two were some of the Colonial Valley Conference’s best in the 2017-2018 season. The Fighting Irish took a 22-16 lead at the end of the first then Notre Dame began piling on the points from beyond the arc thanks to Kayla Burnett who had 17 to take a 48-33 lead at half time. ND would continue it’s stunning performance in the second half to eventually walk away with a 91-70 win to send them to the Semifinal round to face number one seed Trenton Catholic on 2/20. Trenton 66 Hopewell Valley 40 – Mercer County Tournament Quarterfinals It was the second meeting for third seed Trenton and sixth seed Hopewell Valley in a little over a week and the Tornadoes were able to put on another spectacular performance against HVC, this time in the Mercer County Tournament quarterfinals. Trenton got ahead early to go into halftime leading 33-12. In the second half Reggie James would take over to rack up 12 points, six rebounds and five assists in the 66-40 win against the Bulldogs. North Hunterdon 79 Voorhees 65 – Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Boys Semifinals North Hunterdon trailed their district rivals, the Voorhees Vikings, early in this game; however, that seems to be a trend with these Lions. They made a comeback last week against the Vikings and did it once again during the HWS Semis. Paul Woolhouse came up big for the Lions with 22 points and a complete domination under the basket. However, Aaron Clark for the Lions shined, scoring 29 points, while Eddie Davis contributed 22. The two guards provided enough momentum to pull off the upset late in the fourth quarter. Amanda Kix not only led the team in scoring, but she made the last second shot that sealed the deal for the Terriers. Hart had four three-pointers as the Caseys had a total of 10 triples. Rose Caverly scored 13, Katie Rice added 11 and Hayley Moore scored 10 as the Caseys improve to 20-4 and secured a spot in the SCT semifinals. Trenton 57 Hopewell Valley 37 With the regular season coming to a close the Colonial Valley Conference is getting set for the upcoming Mercer County Tournament. Trenton came into Friday’s match up against 17-3 conference rival Hopewell Valley needing to win the next two games to obtain their first division title in four years the Tornados took a lead at the end of the first quarter but really turned it on in the second to go ahead by 10 at half time. The lead would eventually rise to 20 thanks to a 15 point effort from Reggie James to help Trenton earn a 57-31 over Hopewell Valley. The Little Tigers looking to do some upsetting of their own took a 13-7 lead over Steinert at the end of the first quarter. However, after trailing for most of the second the Spartans relied on the three point shot of Natalie Mehl to help give them a 22-17 lead going into half time. Paul VI blanks Hopewell Valley to advance to MCT Semifinal
Paul VI 5 Hopewell Valley 0 Mercer County Tournament Quarterfinal Paul VI who leads the Colonial Valley Conference Valley Division entered Wednesday’s Mercer County Tournament quarterfinal matchup with Hopewell Valley ready to advance to the next round. The Eagles got ahead early and led 2-0 at the end of the first. Bailey Guetens added two goals (3:32) and (13:04) to help take down the Bulldogs 5-0. Notre Dame 5 Hopewell Valley 2 With the hockey season coming to a close in the upcoming weeks the tight race for supremacy for the Colonial Valley Conference could be determined by one loss. Notre Dame who has played a tough schedule this season out of conference play has also had given the CVC some memorable games. While there was no last minute heroics there was some great scoring goal action in Tuesday’s matchup with Hopewell Valley that was worth the price of admission. The Irish scored three goals in the first period to give them an 3-1, Hopewell would counter late in the second to bring them within one, but Notre Dame was able to answer back with two more goals including a mile long shot from TJ Turkvan-Sinchak to lead them to a 5-2 vitocry over their conference rival.
