Massive news from New Jersey basketball as the two time defending state champs will be without their head coach and the top rated recruit in New Jersey for the 2026-27 season
Mike Gordon, Jr. has resigned as the head boys basketball coach at Plainfield and his son Micah Gordon is set to transfer for his senior season to a prep school as first reported by NJ.com’s Mike Kinney. Coach Gordon spent eight seasons guiding the Cardinals winning back to back Group 4 state championships with his son leading the way. Gordon posted a record of 117-77 in his tenure as Plainfield head coach while Micah won Jersey Sports Zone’s Mr. Hoop Zone award in 2026 and leaves as the Cardinals all-time leading scorer with 1,841 points despite only playing three years.
Coach Gordon made a post on social media to thank the community for his special tenure leading the Cardinals:
After eight incredible years, I have made the decision to step down as Head Coach of the Plainfield High School Boys Basketball program.
This has been one of the most meaningful and rewarding experiences of my life. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to lead this program and to work alongside such dedicated student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and members of the Plainfield community. Together, we built something special.. Defined not just by wins, but by accountability, resilience, and character.
I’m extremely proud of what we accomplished. The journey started off with a lot of adversity, but we were able to weather the storm and right the ship. Over the past two seasons, we earned back-to-back Union County Conference Co-Championships, won a Union County Tournament Championships, and achieved back-to-back Group IV State Championships. Being recognized as the #1 team in the state and the top public school program reflects the hard work and commitment of everyone involved.
More than anything, I’m proud of the way our players and coaches represented Plainfield with pride and discipline.
Thank you to the administration, staff, players, families, and the entire Plainfield community for your unwavering support. The relationships and memories we’ve built will stay with me forever.
I am committed to helping with a smooth transition in any way I can.
Plainfield will always be home and will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Gordon is set to join an elite prep program for his final season of high school basketball. The dynamic guard who drew huge crowds to his games here in New Jersey has picked up offers from Providence, Rutgers, Tennessee, Oklahoma State and West Virginia among his 17 current offers. His sensational junior season has helped vault him as a top recruit in the class of 2027. Plainfield won the 2025 Group 4 state championship with Micah and Najai Hines teaming up to take the state by storm. Hines won JSZ’s Mister Hoop Zone award in 2025 and went on to Seton Hall before transferring to play for Danny Hurley and UConn. Gordon was the headliner on the 2026 team that went 25-6 and topped Montgomery for a second straight year at Rutgers for a Group 4 state championship.
