Donovan Catholic nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year, but Immaculate Heart Academy held off the Griffins 2-1 to win a second straight Non-Public “A” state championship.  SSZ has the highlights from Kean University

Immaculate Heart Academy 2 Donovan Catholic 1

Just three batters into the game, IHA had a 2-0 lead and nobody out.  It looked like the defending state champs were ready to run up the score on Donovan Catholic, but a young Griffins roster that features four sophomores and six freshmen settled down and battled to the final out.  Griffins freshman pitcher Lindsey Nelson pitched five scoreless frames following the first inning with six strikeouts.  Donovan Catholic got an RBI blooper to second from Amanda MacBurnie to make it a 2-1 game.  The Griffins had runners in scoring position in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings, but IHA starter Olivia Sprofera was able to get out of every one of those jams.  The junior pitcher finished with 14 strikeouts.   Watch all the higlhights from Kean University:
