A jam-packed day in high school baseball sees Pierce Coppola take the mound for Verona, Anthony Solometo in action for Bishop Eustace in a Diamond Classic thriller, and Williamstown upsetting St. Augustine to reach the Diamond Classic semifinals. Check back throughout the night as the highlights roll in!

Williamstown 6 St. Augustine 4 | Diamond Classic Quarterfinals

The seventh-seeded Braves jumped out to a big lead and hung on late to pull off the upset over the second-seeded Hermits. Bryant commit Caden Dulin and Greg Zerbe each had a pair of RBIs in the win for Williamstown (14-2). Zerbe also got the win on the mound, pitching six strong innings, and kept the deep Hermits lineup in check for most of the afternoon. Kyle Neri, Ryan Weingartner, Austin Sofran, and Cole Frye each knocked in a run in the loss for St. Augustine (18-2). Williamstown faces Cherokee in the Diamond Classic semifinals on Saturday.

Maryland commit Ian Petrutz powered the offense with a two-run homer to help send Eustace (16-0) into the Diamond Classic semifinals to face Gloucester Catholic. Steven Maiers struck out six in relief on the mound for the Dragons (12-6-1) and drove in Kingsway’s only run of the ballgame.

Verona 12 Caldwell 2 (5 Innings)

Typically, when left-hander Pierce Coppola takes the mound, he’s the highlight of the day for Verona. However, that wasn’t totally the case Tuesday as the Hillbillies’ offense came to life for their best performance of the year. Propelled by a six-run first inning and a four-run fifth inning, Verona (8-6) scored their first mercy-rule win of the year to top Caldwell (9-5). Coppola threw 79 pitches in the complete game and struck out eight batters, while also flashing some fielding prowess.
