The Non-Public state quarterfinals take centerstage in high school hockey as two spots in the Non-Public final four were filled on Thursday. St. Joe’s Montvale tries to dethrone two-time champion St. Augustine in South Jersey, plus CBA and Morristown-Beard collide at Jersey Shore Arena. CBA 2 Morristown-Beard 1 | Non-Public State Quarterfinal

Dominic Szczygiel scored on the rebound off a Nick Desiderio shot with 1:02 left in the third period to give the Colts a dramatic comeback win and a spot in the Non-Public Final Four.  Morristown-Beard (19-3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first period on an Evan Redman goal and had the lead with under six minutes to go in the third before Desiderio scored his 33rd goal of the year off a feed from Szczygiel to tie the game 1-1.  Rocco Morenzi had 23 saves in goal for the Colts.  CBA (21-6) will face Don Bosco Prep for the fourth time this season with a spot in the state championship on the line.

St. Joe’s (Mont.) 3 St. Augustine 0 | Non-Public State Quarterfinal

The Green Knights used a three-goal surge in the third period to end St. Augustine’s two-year reign as Non-Public state champions. Logan Hughes scored two goals in 35 seconds off of assists from Kyle Kondratowicz to give SJR the lead for good. Gabe Florio collected 15 saves and earned a shutout in net for fifth-seeded St. Joe’s Montvale (18-4). Liam Slattery had 23 saves in the loss for fourth-seeded St. Augustine (10-9). The Green Knights will now face top-seeded Delbarton in the Non-Public state semifinals at Mennen Arena next Wednesday.
