JSZ closes out the first full week of high school football with some great matchup from all over the Garden State. Check back as the highlights are posted throughout the evening!

St. Joseph’s Metuchen 37 Ridge 34 | Big Central Conference

It was the season opener for both teams during this Week 1 matchup between St. Joseph’s Metuchen and Ridge. The Big Central Conference opponents went back and forth for the majority of the game. Down 21-7 in the first quarter, it looked like Ridge was coming away with their first win of the 2024. St. Joe’s found their rhythm in the second and held onto the lead they built until the very in. Senior TE/DB Ashton Irving was getting it done on both sides of the ball. Irving had two touchdowns and one critical touchdown down the stretch in this one. Junior QB Justin Scaramuzzo controlled the offensive tempo all game long with one rushing touchdown of his own. On defense, Senior LB Javon Hudson was huge for the Falcons with two tackles that resulted in fumble recoveries.

JSZ’s Mackenzie Bruno has the highlights and post-game reaction:

Paramus Catholic 49 Pope John 29 | Super Football Conference

Paladins’ running back Xavier Williams had a career day, rumbling for a remarkable 264 yards and six touchdown runs in a masterful performance against the Lions on Saturday afternoon. He added on a 55-yard catch to finish with 319 total yards of offense. All of Williams’ touchdowns came from the second quarter on, playing through both perfect weather conditions and torrential downpours in the fourth quarter. Paramus Catholic (2-0) has now strung together back-to-back wins heading into their bye week, while Pope John (0-2) will look forward to Week 2 to get their first win of the year.

JSZ’s Jay Cook has the wild highlights and reaction from Sparta:

Glassboro 22 Haddon Heights 12 | West Jersey Football League

The Bulldogs stormed out to an early 22-0 lead but had to fend off a furious rally from the Garnets to bring home a season-opening victory. Amari Sabb got things going with an 89-yard touchdown and finished with 141 total yards in the win. Xavier Sabb made a house call on a 50-yard punt return touchdown, while Davon Barr added a rushing touchdown for Glassboro. Camaj Matthews was tremendous defensively, and Damier Outterbridge-Ali hauled in a touchdown in the loss for Haddon Heights.

JSZ’s James Mooney has the highlights and post-game reaction from Haddon Heights:
