Numerous county tournaments are coming to a close this weekend and JSZ has cameras around the state as teams vie for regional supremacy. We’ll have highlights tonight from Bergen Catholic’s historic win in the Bergen County Jamboree, Jack Cavanaugh’s second-half efforts to deliver an H/W/S title for Sparta and an official four-peat from St. Joe’s (Metuchen) in the GMC finals. St. Joseph (Metuchen) 49 Piscataway 46 – Greater Middlesex Conference Final
St. Joseph’s (Metuchen) claimed its fourth straight Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament Title with an exciting 49-46 victory over Piscataway. A back and forth battle continued all the way down to the final six seconds when up by a point Tyree Ford’s put back on a missed free throw secured the victory for the Falcons. Ford’s clutch performance along with his 13 points earned him MVP honors. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights:
Bergen Catholic 54 Don Bosco Prep 41 – Bergen County Jamboree Final
Bergen Catholic’s Doug Edert was laser focused and connected for 21 points and Xavier-commit Zach Freemantle notched a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double to help drive the Crusaders to its 10th-overall Bergen County Jamboree title. A bit of history came from this one, too — it was Bergen Catholic’s first win over Don Bosco Prep in the championship game, after going 0-5 all-time. Sparta 56 Phillipsburg 53 – H/W/S Boys Championship
Jack Cavanaugh overcame a scoreless first half to catch fire in the final two quarters to score 22 points as the Spartans wiped out a 12 point halftime deficit to claim its first H/W/S title. Richie Manigault scored 23 to lead all scorers in a losing effort. Dante Joefield earned tournament MVP honors and sank three critical free throws in the final seconds to preserve the victory.
