Rumson-Fair Haven field hockey plays for a Group 2 State Championship on Saturday and a big reason is the anchor of the Lady Bulldogs defense

RUMSON – Rumson-Fair Haven’s Catie Ebner had a Wednesday to remember.  In the morning, she signed a national letter of intent to play Division I field hockey at Villanova.   Later that evening, she assisted on the game winning goal in RFH’s 2-1 win against West Deptford in the Group 2 State Semifinals.

At 6-foot-1, everyone expected Catie to play basketball, but she was drawn to field hockey, where the senior is able to get low and use her big reach advantage to anchor the RFH defense.  “She’s unstoppable back there,” RFH field hockey coach Julie Vaccarelli said.  “She comes up with huge play after huge play to keep us in games.   It’s gonna be huge shoes to fill next year.”

To be a Division I athlete, Catie knew she had to put in extra work both on and off the field.  It all paid off when she put pen to paper and signed to play in the Big East for Villanova.  “It totally symbolizes all the hard work that I put in, all the stresses that came with it, and all the great successes,” Ebner said.  “It was a really emotion moment for my parents, for me, and all my coaches.”

Rumson-Fair Haven takes on Madison this Saturday at 12 noon at Bordentown High School for the Group 2 State Championship.
