Bergen Catholic 14 Don Bosco Prep 13 Saturday’s game marked the 70th all-time meeting between these two Bergen County foes and one of America’s best high school rivalries surely lived up to the hype. Bergen Catholic stymied a Don Bosco Prep drive late in the fourth quarter thanks to a game-clinching, one-handed interception by Pierson Tobia. Tight end Tyler Devera also caught a trick play touchdown before the half to give the Crusaders a lead that would never be caught. In fact, the Stateliners hadn’t lost a home game since 2016, but tonight that streak ended. The Union Farmers’ explosive offense, led by Junior QB Andrew Sanborn, took down Phillipsburg 34-24. Alston was presented the Game Ball for 152 rushing yards and a touchdown in their game against Lakewood High School. North Hunterdon 1 Hunterdon Central 1 | Double OT Tie Crosstown rivals met at Hunterdon Central High School for a matchup that is always exciting. This year it ended in a tie. Central’s goalie John Padavano had 9 saves, while Nick Fetten had 13 or North. Check out full highlights now: Delbarton 2 Chatham 0 – Boys Soccer The Delbarton Green Wave kept their spot as the top team in the Garden State after a 2-0 win at home against Chatham. Second half goals from Ryan Ruffo and Brendan McSorley secured the win. Derek Ferro scored the lone goal for East Brunswick who suffers their first loss of the season to drop to 4-1-1. Kelsey O’Kelly | Trinity Hall’s Leader on the Pitch
Kelsey O’Kelly is tasked with plenty of duties as one of the senior captains on Trinity Hall’s girls soccer team. O’Kelly might not get all the scoring chances considering her position as a center back, but she does much more for the Monarchs than score goals — she’s the heart and soul of a young team and motivates her teammates through an infectiously fun attitude on the pitch. Jersey Sports Zone brings you four games of high school soccer action from around the state including defending state champion Kearny looking to stay unbeaten in 20189 Kearny 1 Saint Peter’s Prep 1 The Pirates scored an early goal from Antonio Cellegari and got a stellar effort in goal from Ulises Rodriguez during extra time to earn a tie with the #3 team in the state. Rodrigo Valera scored the equalizer later in the first half and the rest of the game saw outstanding goalkeeping from both Marcello Medrano and Rodriguez. Watch the highlights of an outstanding early season matchup: Piscataway 4 Linden 0 – Boys Soccer Wednesday’s battle between Linden and Piscataway began as mostly a defensive game with no score from either team at halftime. In the opening minutes of the second Piscataway would get on the board with a goal from George Louis Ferdinand. He would eventually add two more scores to complete a hat trick in the Chiefs 4-0 victory over Linden. With only seconds left on the clock in a tight matchup against Manalapan on Friday night, Middletown South kicker Chris Kaldrovics stepped up to kick from 20 yards out. Kaldrovics’ cool demeanor paid off as he booted the game-winning kick as time expired to give the Eagles a 17-14 win on the road. His 204-yard, 4 touchdown performance at The Swamp pushed the Eagles past Freehold Township with a 37-0 win. Bonnies Bound: Justin Winston commits to St. Bonaventure
Justin Winston, who played his high school basketball at Montclair Immaculate, has made a verbal commitment to play Division I basketball in the Atlantic 10 for Saint Bonaventure University. Winston will play the 2018-19 season at Putnam Academy Science in Connecticut, the winners of the 2018 National Prep School championship. The 6-foot-7 power forward averaged 15.3 points per game for an ICHS team that upset Hudson Catholic and reached the state semifinals in New Jersey’s Non-Public “B” division. Ranked the #47 power forward in the class of 2019, Winston had 11 Division I offers, choosing the Bonnies over UConn, Pitt, and Seton Hall among others. Watch JSZ’s highlight reel of Justin Winston’s junior season: Saint Bonaventure went 26-8 in 2017-18 under head coach Mark Schmidt, beating UCLA in the play-in game of the NCAA Tournament before falling to the Florida Gators. St. Bonaventure has two New Jersey natives on the current roster who went to Putnam Science Academy before arriving in Western New York. Kyle Lofton (Union Catholic) and Osun Osunnyi (Mainland) will begin their college basketball careers this winter. Long Branch 4 Middletown South 3 (2 OT) – Boys Soccer Reynaldo Guzman delivered a low liner shot from 33 yards out with 7:05 to go in the second overtime period to cap off an amazing 3-1 comeback by the Green Wave. The Green Knights got a rematch of last year’s Non Public Group 3 State Final in which they lost 10-7. Alexander Rice commits to Bucknell
Former Mater Dei Prep guard Alexander Rice has committed to play Division I basketball in the Patriot League for the Bucknell Bison. Rice, who began his high school career at St. Anthony’s in Jersey City playing under legendary coach Bob Hurley, moved on to Mater Dei Prep for his junior season after the Jersey City school closed its doors. With the sudden departure of Ben Gamble, Rice elected to transfer to the Patrick School for his senior campaign. Rice will team with to Al-Amir Dawes to form one of the most dynamic backcourt duos in New Jersey high school basketball in 2018-19. Alexander’s father, King Rice, was a star at the University of North Carolina and is the current head coach at Monmouth University. Ranney’s Klatsky commits to Florida Gators
Ranney guard Alex Klatsky has made his college choice. The sharpshooting guard will join the Florida Gators basketball program as a preferred walk-on. Klatsky averaged 9.2 points per game for the Panthers and drained 66 three-pointers, good for 2.4 a game. Phillips’ Viral Run Captures First 2018 Top Football Play Award After dazzling Weequahic football fans and then over 2 million viewers around the world, Weequahic High School senior Tyler Phillips captured the first JSZ Top Football Play award this season. Phillips took a botched punt snap on 4th down for 65 yards to the house against Morris Catholic in Week Zero while breaking almost a dozen tackles on the play. The play went viral in under 24 hours and was featured on ESPN’s First Take and social media pages for House of Highlights and Bleacher Report. Here’s JSZ’s presentation to Phillips with our newest award: Winners of each week’s top football play poll will receive a Jersey Sports Zone Football Play of the Week title belt engraved with our logos. Roselle Catholic’s Pierre-Louis is Vegas bound
Roselle Catholic guard Josh Pierre-Louis has given a verbal commitment to play Division I basketball for the UNLV Runnin Rebels. Watch his JSZ highlight reel from his junior season that saw him run the floor for New Jersey’s Tournament of Champions winner Pierre-Louis averaged 8.8 points and 2 points per game for the Lions playing alongside Naz Reid (LSU), Alanzo Frink (South Carolina), Ithiel Horton (Delaware) and Kahlil Whitney (Kentucky). Whitney and Pierre-Louis are back for their senior season at Roselle Catholic as they look to defend their T of C title. The Roselle Catholic point guard chose UNLV over Georgia and Oklahoma State. We wrap up the first full weekend of high school football in New Jersey with highlights from a NJ/PA showcase at Rutgers, a last-second thriller in Colts Neck, the battle of Brick and many more games around the state. Bergen Catholic 21 Archbishop Wood (PA) 7 There was no letdown from Bergen Catholic after a stunning win against national powerhouse Grayson last weekend in Georgia. Back home in the Garden State, the Crusaders came to play and dominated an Archbishop Wood team in the first half for a commanding win. Aleka Strong | Shore Regional Remembers Beloved Teammate
The Shore Regional girls soccer team had an exciting 2017 as they powered through the playoffs and won their third straight Group I state title, but celebration was cut short 11 days later as beloved teammate Aleka Damiano, a 17-year-old West Long Branch resident, passed away after tragically falling ill. It hasn’t been an easy wound to mend, but her Blue Devils teammates have rallied to start the 2018 season and are honoring their play this season in her memory. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story about Shore Regional’s appreciation, dedication and affection for Aleka Damiano.

Fortunately for the Panthers, they have shutout their first two competitors. Phillipsburg’s defense kept them in it, but in the last 12 minutes of this game Nathan Bliss scored the only goal of the day. The second-year head coach enters 2018 after a successful 7-4 record where the Falcons made the playoffs for the first time in over a decade. Although last year’s yardage leader Ian Fitzgerald is gone to graduation, there are a stable of other athletes ready to take over in Tinton Falls. Dashawn Porter, Eli Rife and Jevauhn Garcia will be the starting receivers and the starting defensive backfield. Despite a 2-8 record, Red Bank Regional has something to build on for 2018. The Bucs won their last two games, highlighted by a 21-20 upset win of sectional champ Long Branch on Thanksgiving Eve. That big win propelled Nick Giglio’s team into the off-season. With two dynamic backs (Makai Mickens and Nigel Mitchell combined for over 1200 yards) and Kashaun Turner (17 TFL, 5 sacks) leading the defense, the Bucs are optimistic that they can get off to a good start and improve in the win column. Toms River North Ready To Right the Ship Typically known as an Ocean County public power, Toms River North took a step back last year with a 1-9 record. But head coach Dave Oizerowitz will be turning to physical and oversized linemen to set the tone on both sides of the ball. Senior Stavon Drew will anchor the offensive line and brings experience to the group. Experience will also help out a young defensive line anchored by Najae Hallenbeck and CJ Niedzielski. Hallenbeck, a 16-year-old standing at 6’7, 290 pounds, has already been offered by Rutgers. Niedzielski brings a blue collar toughness to the defense. The Mariners will also employ a fresh offense to improve on last year’s squad. Fans can expect to see Jarrod Pruitt and a stable of tailbacks run the offense in 2018. Ranney five-star recruit Bryan Antoine has given a verbal commitment to play for coach Jay Wright and the Villanova Wildcats. Antoine is considered one of the top 10 prospects in the country. He made the official announcement on Tuesday morning after informing coach Wright on Monday night on his decision to join the Wildcats. Teammate Scottie Lewis has not announced his college choice yet and has Villanova in his final five along with Stanford, Duke, Kentucky and Florida. That would set up a game winning 75-yard touchdown run from sophomore Lukkas Lonodo. AJ Wingfield was a power in the backfield, utilizing his wide receivers and throwing for 196 yards. Luke Ragone had two touchdowns as well, one receiving and the other rushing, for a total of 80 yards. Here’s a preview of our coverage and just scroll down below to watch all of our games Hillsborough 27 Colonia 25 The Hillsborough Raiders staved off a fourth-quarter comeback from Colonia thanks to a game-winning 38-yard field goal from Franklin Wasserman, a former soccer player playing in his first varsity football game, as time expired in regulation. JSZ’s Jay Cook was in Colonia to capture this special moment: West Orange 26 Montclair 19 | Dorian Rawls 3 INTs, 2 TDs | Week 0 Highlights After a disappointing season in 2017, the West Orange Mountaineers felt they had something to prove this season and today was a good start. Though the Montclair shutout West Orange 16-0 in the first half, the Mountaineers came storming back in the second. Dorian Rawls had three interceptions and two touchdowns, while Shakhi Carson rushed for over 100 yards. Talk about a comeback. Bergen Catholic four-star forward Zach Freemantle has made a verbal commitment to play Division I basketball at Xavier. Freemantle blossomed into an offensive force for the 23 win Bergen Catholic Crusaders in 2018. The 6 foot 8 junior poured in 20 points a game, playing physical and above the rim in the post, but also able to step back and knock down a jumper when needed. Zach exploded for 22 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 blocks in the Crusader’s Bergen County Jamboree Semi-Final win over Ramapo. When Nunzio Campanile left Bergen Catholic to join Chris Ash’s staff at Rutgers, the Crusaders kept things in the family when it came to his replacement. Vito Campanile, Nunzio’s brother, moves to Oradell from Seton Hall Prep and quickly settled in with his new team. Bergen Catholic is ranked #13 in the USA Today Preseason Top 25 and opens its slate with two out of state opponents beginning with 5th ranked Grayson in Georgia on August 31. Nottingham 2018 Preview
After a big loss to Allentown in their home opener Nottingham went on an 8 game win streak thanks to some of great defense and sophomore running back Diontae Nicholson. Nicholson ran for 21 touchdowns, averaged 178 yards a game and finished with 1,758 rushing yards for the year, shattering the school record. The North Stars would eventually be defeated in the first round of the group 4 playoffs by Freehold Boro and JSZ Player of the Year Ashonte Worthy. Football rivals unite to help flood victims
When a flood brought 7.83 inches of rain to the Greenbriar community of Brick, over 100 people were forced to evacuate. Two days later, the devastation was on full display as people were forced to get many essential items out of the house and onto their front lawn and driveway. For such a daunting task for an elderly community, they didn’t have to go through it alone. The Coast Guard and a host of volunteers came to the Greenbriar neighborhood and pitched in. The Brick Township and Brick Memorial football teams both had large contingents walking the streets and going house to house to lend a hand. St. John Vianney Reloaded For 2018 After 18 seniors graduated from the program, St. John Vianney has rallied and reloaded its team with some fresh faces and top talent. Former Matawan Regional High School and Kean University coach Joe Martucci is now the head coach and takes over a Lancers squad that’s a staggering 38-0 against Shore Conference opponents since the start of the 2014 season. Martucci has a career record of 197-81-1 in 28 seasons. The Lancers boast one of the most complete offensive lines in the Shore Conference. Right tackle CJ Hanson is a Rutgers University commit, and Division I prospect Paul Liseno create an intimidating presence on the right side of the offensive line. It doesn’t get much better than Montclair’s 2017 season. A perfect 12-0 with one of the most explosive offenses, the challenge to match near perfection in all three phases will be daunting. Josh McKenzie is on his way to the Ivy league and the Yale Bulldogs. The Bergen Catholic running back chose Yale over 12 other schools leading up to his senior season at Bergen Catholic. McKenzie had a number of FBS offers including Rutgers, Boston College, Vanderbilt and Virginia, but opts to head to the Ivy League.
