The state’s most disruptive and physically imposing defensive lineman is officially off the board – and he’s headed to the Lone Star State.

Class of 2023 Bergen Catholic defensive lineman Sydir Mitchell announced Sunday evening that he verbally committed to the University of Texas.

Mitchell, a towering presence who stands at 6’5″ and 335 pounds, is the latest in a long list of Bergen Catholic products to commit to top-level Power 5 college football programs.

Mitchell’s decision to commit to the Longhorns comes after a productive junior season with the Crusaders. He logged 40 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and even snagged one interception. His play along the defensive line was instrumental to Bergen Catholic putting together a 12-0 season and winning the Non-Public A state championship last December.

A who’s who of elite college football programs recruited Mitchell. According to 247Sports, he collected 21 offers and chose Texas over Georgia, Miami and Texas A&M, among others. His recruitment initially exploded after a productive sophomore season in which he assumed a starting role along Bergen Catholic’s defensive line after Tywone Malone (current Ole Miss defensive lineman) went down with a season-ending injury.

Mitchell, who was a JSZ All-Zone Non-Public team selection from the 2021 season, will once again be a centerpiece for Bergen Catholic’s defense this upcoming fall.
