There’s just no stopping them. Hopewell Valley used a 33-point outburst over the final six bouts to take control, clinch a win and secure yet another Colonial Valley Conference Valley Division title in a 45-22 win over Robbinsville Tuesday night. That nearly three-dozen point run was sparked by pins from Brandon Bowman at 182 pounds, heavyweight John Snyder and Jacob Venezia at 113 pounds. The Panthers continued their dual-meet dominance over crosstown rival Point Beach Friday night with a 41-26 win before a sold-out crowd at Memorial Middle School. Point Pleasant Boro gave a valiant effort despite having just eight skaters. Eddie Coyne tied the game on a power play goal on a two-man advantage in the third period to tie the game at 2. The Panthers appeared to take the lead 26 seconds later on an Aidan Zielaznicki goal, but the officials ruled a no-goal after it went off his skate and into the net. Fran Robbinsville 4 Notre Dame 3 Robbinsville picked up its third win in a row with an exciting 4-3 victory over division rival Notre Dame. Despite being down 2-1 entering the third period the Ravens scored three times, including a must see goal from Jeremy Van Duren. SJR’s Smith Vilbert Commits to Penn State
One of New Jersey’s top remaining uncommitted Class of 2019 prospects has a new home. Smith Vilbert, a senior defensive end for St. Joe’s (Mont.), announced Friday he will be signing his national letter of intent to play Division I football at Penn State University. Vilbert made the announcement via his personal Twitter account. In 2018, the 6-7, 251-pounder collected 43 tackles, 17 tackles for a loss, had 11 quarterback hurries and notched nine sacks, second only behind Notre Dame commit Howard Cross III. The Rebels tacked on another “W” to extend their lengthy win-streak to 67-straight dual meet wins on the heels of a 30-28 instant classic against South Plainfield Thursday night. Daniels, who scored 15 points including five-three pointers against Highland Regional is already over 100 points this season and Jones, who had 38 points against LEAP Academy is currently averaging 23.5 points a game. Morris Knolls came to the Jersey Shore and scored an impressive win at RBC plus Marlboro and Freehold Township duked it out in Middletown. Morris Knolls 6 Red Bank Catholic 0 Dylan Idland scored a pair of goals and Sean Murray notched his 15th of the season to give Morris Knolls a fourth straight win to reach 8-8-1 on the season. Christian Brothers Academy 2 Delbarton 2 This is as even a game we’ve seen all season long. Both teams lit the lamp twice, both offenses ripped off 29 shots and both net-minders wrangled in 27 saves. Unranked Madison knocks off Randolph!
Madison 3 Randolph 2 Madison picked up its sixth consecutive win with a 3-2 upset victory over the current No. 7 team in New Jersey, Randolph. The Dodgers suffered a 3-0 shutout in the first matchup this season but made adjustments to hang with the defending Public B State Champions this time around. Randolph scored in the opening four minutes of the first period but Madison retaliated to tie it at 1-1 heading into the second. It was much of the same story in the second as the Dodgers would trail before tying it at 2-2 at halftime. Madison would take a 3-2 lead in the final period off a Jett Tom goal and a great performance from Matt Ubertaccio not only secured the victory but helped him set the school record for most wins as a goalie. NJ Devils + Damon Severson Honor JSZ’s Top December Goals
Jersey Sports Zone and the New Jersey Devils are teaming up for the second consecutive year to honor the Garden State’s rich crop of hockey talent. NJ Devils defenseman Damon Severson met Adriana Crepaldi (Trinity Hall), Jack Werther (Marlboro), Demitri Forand (Middletown South) and Sam Charlat (Millburn) to recognize their next-level scores from December. The players were treated with a VIP experience, watched their goals on the largest in-arena scoreboard in the world and were treated with a timely scoring outburst from the Devils as they scored season-high eight goals in an 8-5 rout over the Chicago Blackhawks. JSZ brings you Monday night high school basketball frorm South Jersey as Penns Grove scores a road win at Kingsway. Penns Grove 77 Kingsway 59 Penns Grove posted five players in double digits in a balanced attack to score a Tri-County road win at Kingsway. Roselle Catholic moves to 12-0, Ranney suffers first loss at Empire Invitational
Two New Jersey basketball powers journeyed to the Bronx for the Empire Invitational. JSZ has the highlights of Roselle Catholic facing Stepinac in a matchup of last year’s top-ranked squads from NJ and NY in addition to Ranney’s battle against New England Prep school power Macduffie out of Massachusetts. MacDuffie 79 Ranney 75 Wake Forest signee Ismael Massoud scored 26 points and UConn pledge James Bouknight added 17 points and 11 rebounds to hand Ranney their first loss of the season. The Panthers were playing their second high profile game in the span of 24 hours after beating Bergen Catholic at the Hoop Group Showcase before turning right around to play in the Bronx. Bryan Antoine had 29 points and Scottie Lewis had 25. Antoine had a three-point attempt for the lead in the final seconds, but the shot was off the mark. SPP Hockey, Pezzolla Dazzle in Dominant Win over Seton Hall Prep
Go ahead and call St. Peter’s Prep forward Ty Pezzolla “The Magician.” Pezzolla had three points, highlighted by a dazzling top-shelf backhand goal as he was falling to the ice, to help St. Peter’s Prep capture a 5-3 win over Seton Hall Prep Wednesday night at Codey Arena. The victory marks the first time since the 2015-2016 season that the Marauders captured a regular season sweep over the Pirates. St. Peter’s Prep outscored Seton Hall Prep, 10-4, in two games this season. The Marauders (6-3) are now well in control of first place in the Gordon Conference’s National Division as the Pirates (9-5-1) sit in third place. The Gray Bees led by seven in the second half, but the Lions forced overtime. St. Benedict’s Prep weathered through the overtime period – and a late push by MI – to lock up the win. A big second quarter gave Seton Hall Prep a 32-31 halftime lead, but St. Mary’s poured it on in the second half. Phil Brown led the way with 16. Millburn wins second straight at Essex County Holiday Tourney
Millburn 2 Madison 1 The Millburn Millers defeated the Madison Dodgers 2-1 on Thursday afternoon for the second game of the Essex Holiday Tournament. Millburn’s Sam Charlat scored both goals for the Millers. He now has 10 goals for the season, and the Millers improved their overall to 7-1-2. Heading into halftime we were tied at 25 before TCA took a 12 point lead to end the third. University fought back in the final quarter to tie the game at 45-45 with 38 seconds remaining. Zrada’s 22 leads Moorestown past Notre Dame 63-48
The Moorestown Quakers defeated Notre Dame on Friday night, improving their overall record to 3-0 for the season. Senior Jagger Zrada played a big role in the Moorestown victory, scoring 22 points for his team. The comeback came in the third quarter when the Quakers scored 27 points. Monarchs on Ice: Trinity Hall’s New Girls Hockey Team Nets 8 in Thrilling Debut
Welcome to the New Jersey hockey community, Trinity Hall. The Tinton Falls all-girls high school is now the 14th team in the Garden State to offer varsity girls hockey. Rigorous early morning practice schedules before school have certainly paid off as the Monarchs opened their inaugural season with an explosive 8-2 over Westfield in its first ever game. The team is made up of seven freshman and two juniors, and an all-freshman top line of Adriana Crepaldi, Elisabeth Clements and Molly Riggi combined for 13 points in the win. Phillipsburg was dominant in their first dual meet of the season, scoring bonus points in 12 of 14 matches on their way to a 68-0 takedown of the Hillsborough Raiders. The Stateliners benefitted from four pins and three forfeits, but wrestlers grinded out last-minute wins and controlling tech falls. Top NJ Football Recruits Put Pen to Paper
Congratulations to the dozens of New Jersey high school football players who inked their National Letters of Intent Wednesday morning. Jersey Sports Zone has coverage from the St. Joe’s (Mont.) and Newark Central signing days as their top recruits make their college choices official. State Champs Grieco, Cross III Highlight SJR Signing Day Two of New Jersey’s most feared defensive players have made their college choices. Both JSZ All-Zone team members, defensive back Connor Grieco officially signed with Boston College and defensive lineman Howard Cross III will join Notre Dame. Grieco was one of the highest ranked uncommitted recruits coming into this week after decommitting from Rutgers mid-season. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story on the eight SJR signees: Central High School’s Mohammad Kamara Chooses Temple University Newark’s Mohammad Kamara made his decision public and official on National Signing Day at Central High School in front of his friends, family members, teammates and coaches. The Top 50 Linebacker was between Rutgers and Temple. However, Kamara signed with Temple University, and will further his athletic and academic career in Philadelphia next fall. JSZ’s Madison Bess was there to watch him sign his name on paper: Four Pleasantville Greyhounds Sign Meanwhile at Pleasantville High, four Greyhounds football players signed Division I letters of intent. Keyport’s Gigi Piccini Scores 1,000th Point vs. Ranney
Keyport High School’s Gigi Piccini scored her 1,000th point early on in the season during her game against Ranney on Tuesday night. This was the Red Raider’s second game of the season. Livingston picks up first win on the ice
Livingston 3 Westfield 2 Jacob Fuhrman scored a pair of goals and Matt McLaughlin had a goal and an assist as the Lancers picked up their first win of the season. Excitement Galore After NJ’s First-Ever Girls Wrestling Match
After months of conversation and planning, girls wrestling in the Garden State has finally arrived. A pair of Shore Conference teams — Jackson Memorial and Manalapan — took part in the first-ever girls wrestling match Friday night before a packed house at Manalapan High School. The excitement was through the roof. Coaches and wrestlers from both programs said afterwards they hoped to have kickstarted some momentum into more girls coming out for wrestling. The latest numbers show about 125 girls will wrestle throughout the season. Pennington’s Higgins scores 1,000th point despite loss to Hun
Hun 57 Pennington 44 Pennington Senior Patrick Higgins needed six points to reach 1,000 on his career, he finished with 20. In a local rivalry matchup with Hun, the Raiders crept by the first half with a 25-21 lead at the break. Higgins would achieve his milestone early in the third quarter, but it was the Raiders who would capitalize on the energy. 6’7 forward Andrew Seager ended the game with 20 points while Eric Flemming had 13. Shadon Willis Is The Heart of Hillside
Make no bones about it — Shadon Willis is the unquestioned Heart of Hillside. Albeit a talented football player, it’s the tribulations and challenges Willis overcame in an early life without parents and through the foster care system that make him one of his town’s most beloved young men. It’s also the main reason why Willis was presented the 2018 Heart of a Giant award, a collaboration between the New York Giants, USA Football and the Hospital for Special Surgery. Phelps (PA) 67 Peddie 61 – Peddie School Invitational Tournament Final The Phelps School of Malvern, PA won the 46th annual Peddie School Invitational Tournament after defeating the hosting Falcons 67-61. Although Peddie had success from beyond the arc early it was no match for the Lions tough defense that would ultimately keep them ahead the entire matchup. Luckily for them they made the right call getting Ocean Township graduate Andrew Seager. In Saturday’s Peddie School Invitational Tournament game against Solebury (PA), Seager stepped up big time with a 33 point performance that featured defense, a three point game and a couple dunks to help the Raiders walk away with a 70-58 victory. Arjun’s Faceoff: Hillsborough Youngster Fighting Cancer With Hockey
Arjun Jain is not your typical hockey brawler. Instead of being a fourth-liner who drops his gloves, Jain is a centerman battling the biggest faceoff of his life. The 10-year-old Hillsborough native and ultra-hockey enthusiast has recently reached the 100-day mark in his fight against Leukemia. To support and honor his fight, the Hillsborough Raiders are dedicating their 2018-2019 season to him. Bergen Catholic’s Robert Howard Commits to Penn State
Robert Howard is the real deal. The Bergen Catholic junior is on the heels of a 2017-2018 year where he collected some major hardware. And he how has one more accomplishment to tout. He announced yesterday on Twitter his decision to commit to the top-ranked collegiate wrestling program, Penn State, for legendary head coach Cael Sanderson. N I T T A N Y L I O N 🦁 #WeAre pic.twitter.com/1ZFlepqlc6 — Robert Howard (@Robbie__Howard) December 5, 2018 Howard is the No. 1 nationally-ranked wrestler at 126 pounds and the No. 3 ranked prospect in the Class of 2020, according to FloWrestling.com. Howard went 26-0 during his sophomore campaign, won his first state championship at 120 pounds and grabbed the gold medal at the Youth Olympics this summer in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
