Watch highlights of the South’s 20-14 win over the North in the Phil Simms North-South All Star Game

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Colts Neck running back Anthony Gargiulo rambled for an 11-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to give the South All-Stars a 20-14 win over the North in the Phil Simms North-South High School Football Classic at Piscataway High School.  Manalapan linebacker Chris Noesges, who will play college football at Assumption this fall, was named South Defensive MVP after falling on a loose football on the 11-yard line setting up Gargiulo’s run one play later.

The North got on the board on the opening drive with the longest play of the entire game.  Cedar Grove’s Joe Slattery fired a quick pass to Queen of Peace running back Kevin Momnohin, who ran away from the secondary for a 67 yard score.  The South took a 7-6 lead in the second quarter on a three yard run by Palmyra’s John Harmon, but trailed at the half when Slattery hit Lakeland’s Steve Thompson to make it a 14-7 game at intermission.

In the 3rd quarter, Joey Fields of Monsignor Donovan tied the game at 14 when he sprinted to the right corner of the end zone from fifteen yards out.  Jackson Memorial’s Khani Glover delivered an interception in the third and Noesges got the game’s only other turnover setting the stage for Gargiulo, who will play Division I football at Navy.

This is the first year Phil Simms name was attached to the all-star game.  The former Super Bowl XXI MVP and current CBS Sports NFL analyst was very hands on throughout the all-star event.  He brought along four big names to hand out MVP awards – former NY Giants teammate Jim Burt, Washington Redskins great Joe Theismann and former Jets lineman Dave Szott.  Jim Jeffcoat was the other former NFL great set to hand out post-game honors, but the current college football coach was not allowed to attend due to NCAA rules.  To prepare for the all-star game, the North and South squads got to practice at both the New York Giants and New York Jets practice facilities.
