The 2021-2022 New Jersey high school sports season is officially over, but that doesn’t mean we can’t reminisce on what was an incredible year.

Jersey Sports Zone’s team of multimedia journalists had boots on the ground from August 2021 through June 2022 and covered over 1,000 games in over a dozen different sports during that timeframe.

So, before we turn the page on the past year, our team gets together and looks back on their favorite moments in each sport.

Feature Stories: 2021-2022 Season

Jay Cook | North Jersey: Abigail Dennis: Conquering Life’s Hurdles; May 22, 2022

“Resiliency is the word that comes to mind when you say the name Abigail Dennis to anyone in North Jersey. Video of the Old Tappan hurdler went viral across the world this spring after she tumbled and then fought back to win a 100 meter race. What’s more impressive is her perspective on fighting and never giving up.”

Rich Chrampanis | Central Jersey: The Legend of Matty Cools Continues; Feb. 5, 2022

“For four years, Matt Newman was the student manager of the Rumson-Fair Haven boys basketball team. The RFH autistic student manager suited up for Senior Day and delivered a special moment. This was a story that generated a lot of interest beyond New Jersey and when you watch the piece you’ll see why.”

Nery Rodriguez | Central Jersey: Union football fights back after forfeit; Nov, 15, 2022

“One of the most inspiring stories I have ever been a part of, period. To watch Union’s Davidson Igbinosun, one of New Jersey’s top football recruits, on the verge of making his college decision fight for his team, coaches, school and community against a school board ruling to cut their winning season short because of Covid-19 was incredible to witness and should give you a clear understanding of the impact high school sports can have.”

Mike Frankel | South Jersey: Bo Melton Drafted by Seahawks; April 30, 2022

“Cedar Creek and Rutgers product Bo Melton had to wait a few hours to hear his name called on Day 3 of the NFL Draft. The wait ultimately proved to be worth it when the Seahawks selected Melton in the seventh round, setting off an emotional celebration in Toms River.”

James Mooney | South Jersey: Penn Relays; April 30, 2022

“The Union Catholic boys DMR team raced in the history books at the prestigious Penn Relays, winning the first Championship of America title for the program. Overall, it was a tremendous weekend at Franklin Field for New Jersey’s top track and field athletes on the international stage.”
