Bermudez hauled in an unsightly 91 catches for 1,662 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Pirates. Bermudez dominated defensive backfields all season long and helped Cedar Creek to a perfect 13-0 season. His blazing start to the regular season caught the eyes of coaches from Cincinnati, as he is now verbally committed to the Bearcats. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the profile: Alex Brown, Red Bank Catholic QB Alex Brown’s story throughout the 2021 postseason is well documented and will be talked about for years to come on Broad Street. Following the death of his mother, Brown delivered 12 touchdowns and no turnovers in the Caseys’ three-game playoff run to win the Non-Public B championship. The Bucknell commit ultimately threw for 1,817 yards and 22 touchdown passes with 519 rushing yards and 10 touchdown runs in his lone season at Red Bank Catholic. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the profile: Davison Igbinosun, Union ATH There are no arguments here: Davison Igbinosun is one of the most dynamic players in the entire state of New Jersey. Igbinosun was a hawking defensive back and a devastating weapon on offense for the Farmers in his final high school year. He was the top receiver and rusher for the Farmers’ offense and notched 74 tackles and three interceptions on defense. Union’s season had an unceremonious ending, but that doesn’t take away from the impact he had in a 9-2 season in Union County. Q’yaier Price, DePaul Catholic DE One of the state’s most unblockable defensive forces finished off a senior season with some eye-popping numbers. Price compiled 35.5 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks for the 9-3 Spartans in 2021. He led the way for a defense that didn’t allow a touchdown for a five-game stretch at the beginning of the season and who eventually made it to the Non-Public B title game. Price flipped commitments from Syracuse to Rutgers after emerging as one of New Jersey’s top edge defender talents during the 2021 season. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the profile: 2021 JSZ Football Plays of the Year The top plays captured by JSZ cameras were on display each week for the Top Play Belt. Our year-end plays of the year featured six winners that went head to head for the final Top Play Belt of the 2021 season:

Top 10 Football Games of the 2020 Season: JSZ Summer Recap Series
The 2020 football season will be forever remembered in New Jersey. Not because of the missing state championships, but due to the resiliency of programs and players all season long. JSZ’s Summer Recap Series of the 2020-2021 scholastic season starts with football. “Unofficial” champions were crowned, crossover games between unfamiliar opponents happened and wild finishes were a thing of the norm. Here are the Top 10 football games of the 2020 season! No. 10 : Mater Dei’s Trick Play Hits Again, This Time Taking out RFH on Late Touchdown Mater Dei Prep always seems to have a thing for theatrics. The Seraphs dug into their successful bag of tricks and pulled out this hook-and-ladder touchdown to blow past Rumson-Fair Haven late and secure a 25-19 win on Halloween. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis had the highlights: No. 9: Somerville hammers Woodbridge in High Scoring Showdown Somerville and Woodbridge both employed talented running backs and explosive offenses in 2020. These two juggernauts collided on Nov. 13 and the Pioneers – led by JSZ Player of the Year finalist Cookie Desiderio – toppled Ali Lee Jr. and his Woodbridge Barrons to the tune of 39-26. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez was on the call: No. 8: No Shortage of Drama in St. Augustine/Williamstown Thriller After a Turner Inge touchdown run in overtime, the Braves were staring down a second overtime period or the win on a two-point conversion. St. Augustine, however, wasn’t planning on going home with a tally in the loss column. The Hermits buckled down and made a goal line stop to secure one of their four wins from a tumultuous 2020 season. JSZ’s Mike Frankel had the highlights from October 30: No. 7: Bergen Catholic Spoils Party, Tops St. Peter’s Prep in Rich Hansen’s Final Game What a fitting way it was to end the 2020 season. St. Peter’s Prep looked to send longtime coach Rich Hansen out with a win in his final game. Bergen Catholic was playing to secure the unofficial No. 1 statewide ranking with a victory. A full dose of Princeton-commit Ryan Butler late in this game pushed the result into Bergen Catholic’s favor, with a close call at the end in a 22-15 final. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis and Jay Cook teamed up to tell this story on Nov. 28: No. 6: Lenape Downs Rival Cherokee in OT Playoff Thriller For anyone who think special teams doesn’t matter at the high school level – watch this game. Lenape kicker Dylan Shank’s 48-yard field goal in overtime was the deciding factor in a South Jersey Pod A semifinal game between two longtime rivals. JSZ’s Mike Frankel had the highlights on Nov. 15: No. 5: Becton’s Perfect Season Realized with First NJIC Title Win Only one conference played a true, official championship in 2020. The Becton Wildcats ran the table with a 6-0 record and captured the first NJIC championship in program history with a commanding 41-12 win over Waldwick/Midland Park in the title game on Nov. 20. JSZ’s Jay Cook was on the call: No. 4: Don Bosco Downs Rival Bergen Catholic on Last Play Touchdown Throw out the records when Don Bosco and Bergen Catholic take the field because these two rivals always play their best games when they’re on the field together. The Crusaders held a commanding lead going into halftime, but senior QB Jake Robbins turned it up late and brought the Ironmen back in for the win in the fourth quarter. A last-second touchdown pass to Ethan Acevedo and a game-winning extra point from Thomas Sawicki sealed a victory for the ages. JSZ’s Jay Cook had the highlights from this Nov. 14 showdown: No. 3: Wall’s Defense, Last Stand Cement Unofficial Shore Conference Championship Wall proved to be not only the best team in the Shore Conference in 2020, but was certainly among the state’s elite when the season ultimately came to a close. The Crimson Knights won their “unofficial” Shore Conference championship on Nov. 20 when a goal line stand preserved an 18-15 win. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis was on the call: No. 2: Holy Spirit Does It’s Thing, Claims Unofficial South Jersey Championship Holy Spirit’s win in the unofficial South Jersey championship was hardly a surprise. The Spartans were powered by JSZ Player of the Year finalist Patrick “Cheeks” Smith all year long and a magical ride concluded on their home field on Nov. 20. Smith rushed for 232 yards and two scores, closing out Holy Spirit’s perfect 8-0 season with a 21-7 victory over Lenape. JSZ’s Mike Frankel was on the call: No. 1: Seton Hall Prep Stuns Undefeated St. Peter’s Prep in OT Seton Hall Prep has certainly made it clear over the years that you can never count them out of any game. The last case? This unforgettable, overtime win over previously-undefeated St. Peter’s Prep on Nov. 23. Myles Thomason scored a game-tying touchdown in overtime and special teams ace Nick Conforti buried the game-winning extra point to cap off one of the most wild games of the 2020 season. JSZ’s Jay Cook was on the highlights:

Spring “Spirit”; Pitchers and Catchers Report
Just like in the big leagues, pitchers and catchers get a head start in New Jersey this season. It’s a new wrinkle in the preseason schedule, as teams get back to practice after the 2020 season was lost to COVID-19 concerns. For Holy Spirit, 2021 marks an opportunity to make a run at a Non-Public B state championship. The Spartans have plenty of top arms to help lead the way, but Spirit isn’t taking anything for granted this season. JSZ’s Mike Frankel checks in with the Spartans in Absecon:

Malone, Smith Make College Decisions
Two of the top seniors in the Garden State, Tywone Malone and Patrick “Cheeks” Smith, signed letters of intent on Wednesday. JSZ was on hand for the signings. Malone Signs with Ole Miss Tywone Malone has found his next home. After starring at Bergen Catholic for four years, Malone put pen to paper Wednesday is officially committed to the University of Mississippi. Malone, who will play both football and baseball at Ole Miss, is a rare two-sport athlete for a man of his stature. Arguably New Jersey’s No. 1 recruit, Malone keeps Bergen Catholic’s tradition alive of sending talented players to top Power 5 programs. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story from Oradell: Jersey Sports Zone’s coverage of Bergen Catholic is brought to you by Rothman Orthopaedics. Smith Signs with Vanderbilt Patrick “Cheeks” Smith is heading to the SEC. The Holy Spirit senior RB signed with Vanderbilt on Wednesday night, in front of family, friends, coaches and teammates. Estime was a force topping 1800 yards and 22 ground scores in just eight games of action Watch JSZ’s Zoneman Trophy presentation and an extended interview with Audric during his signing day ceremony: Estime received 33 votes from JSZ’s 72 person voting panel of head coaches and statewide media: Thank you to the head coaches and statewide media who cast their vote for the 2020 Zoneman Coaches: Joe Wojechowski, Lenape, Sean Clancy, Notre Dame, Rich Hilliard, St. Joe-Metuchen, Joe LaSala, Woodbridge, Vin Mistretta, Jackson Memorial, Montrey Wright, Salem, Kenny Scott, Winslow, Kevin Smith, Ocean City, Pat Gallagher, Williamstown, Steve Scanlon, Clearview, Chris Sacco, Absegami, Tim Gushue, Shawnee, Pete Lancetta, St. Augustine, John Whitehead, Paramus Catholic, Vito Campanile, Bergen Catholic, John McKenna, DePaul Catholic, Dan Sabella, Don Bosco Prep, Darnell Grant, West Orange, Bill Fitzgerald, Seton Hall Prep, David Schuman, Red Bank Regional, Dan Curcione, Donovan Catholic, Jeff Rainess, Holmdel, Jim Raso, Hammonton, Rich Hansen, St. Peter’s Prep, Tony Grandinetti, Wall, Jim Sharples, Jackson Liberty, Dom Marangi, St. Joe-Montvale, Mike Lange, Red Bank Catholic, Don Klein, Ocean Township, Bryant Garvin, Newark East Side, Jason Acerra, Bayonne, Andrew Patterson, Robbinsville, Brian Bowers, Delbarton, Todd Smith, Hun, Chris Beagen, Sayreville, Dave Ellis, Freehold Boro, Al Chiola, Linden, Dallas Whitaker, Somerville, John Viotto, South Brunswick, John Emel, Penns Grove, Rob Davis, Barnegat, Brian Russo, Rahway, Lou Grasso, Union, Roger Kotlarz, Wayne Valley, Scott Bray, Bridgewater-Raritan, Kevin Kostibos, Summit, Len Zdanowicz, Brick Township Media: Rich Chrampanis, JSZ, Jay Cook, JSZ, Nery Rodriguez, JSZ, Mike Frankel, JSZ, Kenneth Bradley, JSZ, James Mooney, JSZ, Andrew Koob, NJ.com, Sean Miller, NJ.com, Mike McGarry, Press of Atlantic City, Kevin Minnick, NJ.com, Tom Williams, Prime Events, Pat Lanni, NJ.com, Ryan Patti, Rivals.com, Dave McCarthy, McCarthy Report, Shawn Brown, 247 Sports, Chris Melvin, Asbury Park Press, Todderick Hunt, NJ.com, Mike Kinney, NJ.com, Joe Zedalis, NJ.com, Bob Badders, Shore Sports Network, Chris Gallagher, News 12 NJ, Sunil Sunder Raj, Gannett, Kyle Franco, NJ.com, John Jones, Max Preps, GMC Gridron 2020 JSZ All-Zone Non-Public Offense (Click player’s name to watch their JSZ All-Zone profile!) Now Tahj Bullock’s illustrious high school career is over – and he’ll be discussed as one of the most impactful player to ever play for the Marauders. Bullock, a Virginia Tech commit, flashed in the six games St. Peter’s Prep played in this season. He completed 51 percent of his passes for 818 yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of 12:0. Ducee also accounted for 306 yards and six more touchdowns on the ground, bringing his career touchdown total to an impeccable 52 scores. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story on Bullock Cookie Desiderio, Somerville RB Players like Cookie Desiderio don’t come around very often – and the numbers he produced in 2020 were just as unique. The Somerville bruiser exceeded every and all exception in this wild season with 1,569 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns on only 152 carries. That comes out to 10.3 yards every single time Desiderio took a handoff. You know what makes those numbers so impressive? It’s the fact that Desiderio did it in only seven games and that he surpassed every single benchmark he previously set in his junior season. Desiderio becomes the second player in Somerville history to be nominated for the award (Jalahn Dabney, 2018.) The recognition is well-deserved. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the feature: Audric Estime, St. Joe’s (Mont.) RB Audric Estime put in an offseason for the ages to deliver one of the most dominant single season efforts anyone has ever seen in North Jersey. While playing in arguably one of the toughest divisions in the entire country, the St. Joe’s (Mont.) product ran roughshod over the competition for 190 carries, 1,857 yards and 22 touchdowns. All of those were career highs in only eight games played. The Michigan State commit was also the only player in the state to account for 2,000 scrimmage yards and finished 2020 with a total 2,042 yards and 24 touchdowns. The Big 10 better be ready for what’s coming. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story: Casey Larkin, Wall ATH Both the soul and heartbeat of Wall’s undefeated 2020 team is, without question, Casey Larkin. A starter on both sides of the ball for the Crimson Knights, Larkin shined in every game he played. At running back, he rushed for 870 yards and 13 touchdowns on only 97 carries. At defensive back, Larkin anchored the Crimson Knights defense with 32 tackles, five pass defenses and a fumble recovery. Wall won the unofficial Shore Conference championship this season and finished the year 7-0. Larkin delivered two standout performances in the semifinal and finals. Some in New Jersey consider Wall to be the state’s top-ranked team – if they indeed are, then Larkin had a major say in that decision. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the story: Patrick “Cheeks” Smith, Holy Spirit RB If you ask any high school football fanatic in South Jersey who the area’s top player was this season, the answer would be short and quick: Cheeks. Patrick Smith, the Holy Spirit standout, was an absolute force to be reckoned with every time the rock was in his hands. Smith concluded an unforgettable 2020 campaign with 1,719 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on a workhorse-like 221 carries this season. Holy Spirit ended the season at 8-0 after becoming the unofficial South Jersey champions with a 21-7 win over Lenape in the WJFL Bracket A Final. Smith’s incredible top-end speed and vision helped drive the Spartans to the upper echelon on New Jersey high school football in a crazy season. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the feature: JSZ Plays of the Year The JSZ Football Plays of the Year will wrap up on December 21st with the six winners of each category vying for the top overall play of the year. Meet the 2020 JSZ Zoneman Trophy Finalists
Jersey Sports Zone is excited to formally announce the five finalists for the 2020 Zoneman Trophy — our N.J. high school football Player of the Year award. The winner will be announced virtually on the evening of Dec. 18. Meet the five finalists now! The Story of the Zoneman Trophy By Rich Chrampanis, Jersey Sports Zone COO In the year 2000, I received the great honor of a Heisman Trophy ballot as I started my tenure on television at WPDE-TV in Myrtle Beach. I was so excited to get the chance to weigh in on such a significant award and it got me thinking of bringing the same kind of excitement to our high school football coverage. So we built a trophy – and instead of the Heisman – the Zoneman was born. During my 15 years, we were fortunate to have some outstanding winners of our award starting with former Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins linebacker Lawrence Timmons, former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson and current Oakland Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, who caught the game winning TD pass in the 2016 National Championship game. The Zoneman tradition is still going strong in South Carolina, began its New Jersey chapter on the Jersey Shore and is now a coveted statewide honor. We’re excited to continue this tradition in New Jersey high school football as we will present the most outstanding player in the state with our Fourth Annual Zoneman Trophy. Woodrow Wilson’s Fadil Diggs won the 2019 Zoneman Player of the Year award. The Zoneman Balloting Our 2020 Zoneman will be voted on by head coaches from every part of the state (WJFL, Shore Conference, Big Central and the SFC) as well as the JSZ staff and media representatives from around the state. Every ballot has a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place vote with three points awarded for 1st, two for 2nd and one point for 3rd. We are excited to announce the finalists for the 2020 Zoneman Trophy in alphabetical order: Meet the 2020 Zoneman Finalists Tahj Bullock, St. Peter’s Prep QB Before ever taking a snap at St. Peter’s Prep, fans and coaches on the St. Peter’s Prep stands and sidelines buzzed about a kid nicknamed “Ducee” who would take New Jersey by storm. JSZ Camp Countdown: Preseason Football Previews for the 2020 Season
Football teams in New Jersey are currently preparing for the 2020 high school season in a preseason like no other. Brian Wright takes over for Hinson after eight seasons at Cherry Hill West. Wright now presides over one of the best rosters in the state highlighted by junior DE/WR Jihaad Campbell, and junior quarterback Donovan Leary. The Chargers also added senior running back, Temple-commit Johnny Martin, who transferred from Highland in the offseason. Reflecting on The Last Dance
In a year that’s often felt hopeless for New Jersey high school athletes, the Last Dance Tournament offered optimism. Thousands of players took part in an event that will be remembered for years to come. Whether it was three games, or three weeks, the high school baseball community found a piece of something that was lost. Players, coaches, parents and fans got to say goodbye to the season on their own terms. Jersey Sports Zone presents a special Last Dance video essay: Our thanks to Sterling National Bank and to RWJBarnabas Health for making JSZ’s Last Dance coverage possible.

Jersey Sports Zone has cameras at most of the games on Tuesday, so be sure to check back throughout the night for all of the exciting action! Jersey Sports Zone’s Last Dance Tournament highlights are being brought to you by Sterling National Bank. South Region | Arm & Hammer Park Dirty Boyz Liedtka Trucking 6 Lawrence Irish Road (Notre Dame) 2 It was a matchup many anticipated being the 2020 Mercer County Tournament Final prior to the cancellation of spring sports. Dirty Boyz Liedtka Trucking (Hamilton West) defeated Lawrence Road Irish (Notre Dame) 6-2 following a four-run rally in the top of the seventh started by senior David Zamora. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights: Thank you to Princeton Orthopaedic Associates for sponsoring both our Hamilton West and Notre Dame coverage. South Region | First Energy Park Brooklawn (Gloucester Catholic) 1 Middletown North 0 Tyler Parks threw a gem for GC, allowing just three hits in a complete-game shutout. The UNC-Charlotte commit struck out six. Adam Gates played a big role in the win as well, throwing out a Lions runner at the plate, and driving in the only run of the game with a sixth-inning single. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the highlights and reaction from the home of the Blue Claws in Lakewood: Coverage of Gloucester Catholic is brought to you by NJM Insurance. Middletown North coverage is made possible by ACI Medical and Dental School. South Region | First Energy Park Washington Twp. 11 Sussex Red (High Point/Wallkill Valley) 1 (5 innings) The Minutemen cruised into the Round of 16 thanks to strong outing on the hill from Nick Hammer. The La Salle commit allowed just one earned run in five innings of work. Dylan Sharkey and Colson Gonzalez both drove in runs, and had two hit apiece in the victory. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the highlights from Lakewood: Coverage of Washington Township is made possible by Cooper University Health Care. North Region | Yogi Berra Stadium Don Bosco Prep 7 Governor Livingston 6 The Ironmen score six times in the sixth inning to avoid an upset and advance to the Last Dance Sweet 16. The Highlanders had the #1 seed in the North on the ropes scoring twice in the first and adding three more runs in the 5th to take a 5-0 lead. Berger, named a 2020 All-American, delivered the goods in his senior season while accounting for 1,218 scrimmage yards and 17 touchdowns for the Ironmen. Berger remains uncommitted yet holds offers from college football’s best — Alabama, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, LSU and Michigan are among the schools recruiting him. The announcement will come on live TV during the All-American bowl on Jan. 4 from San Antonio, TX. Jada Byers, St. Joseph (Hamm.) There’s no other way to put it — Jada Byers is the most dynamic scoring threat to ever grace South Jersey. Byers, a Sacred Heart commit, was an electric runner with the football who scored a South Jersey record 102 touchdowns in three years of varsity play with the Wildcats. His mark of 644 career points ranks second in South Jersey history only behind Kevin Harvey. The highlights of Byers’ 2019 season was a 10-touchdown performance against Morris Catholic in the sectional semifinals. Fadil Diggs, Woodrow Wilson There might not be a better two-way player in the Garden State. The Woodrow Wilson star and future Texas A&M Aggie shined on both sides of the ball in a stellar 2019 season. He collected 95.5 tackles and 17.5 sacks on defense while also catching 65 passes for 1,031 yards and 11 touchdowns on offense. Woodrow Wilson head coach Preston Brown told JSZ Diggs is the best player in Camden’s history. Kyle Monangai, Don Bosco Prep Talk to anyone in North Jersey and they’ll tell you Don Bosco Prep doesn’t get back to it’s winning ways without Kyle Monangai on the field. After transferring to the Ramsey private school from Seton Hall Prep after his sophomore season, Monangai put up eye-popping numbers. He put up 2,903 scrimmage yards on 310 touches with 35 touchdowns in arguably the toughest conference in America. He holds 25-plus D-I offers yet remains uncommitted. Cody Simon, St. Peter’s Prep He’s the best player on the best team in New Jersey — does anything else need to be said? Simon’s boasts one of the most polished resume’s we’ve seen in years. He was a preseason for the 2019 Butkus Award, was one of five N.J. players named an All-American and is committed to play at Ohio State. Simon led the Marauders with 106 tackles, 4.5 sacks, four interceptions and four touchdowns on defense and special teams. Luke Wypler, St. Joe’s (Mont.) What does it take to be ranked the No. 1 center in the entire country? Watch the way Luke Wypler dominates on the gridiron. Wypler’s intelligence and intensity on the field is a major reason why St. Joe’s had the toughest offensive line in the state — that translated to a Non-Public Group 4 championship in 2018. Wypler, also named a 2020 All-American, is committed to play at Ohio State after a stellar career in Montvale.

Watch Sunday 12.8 JSZ Championship Football Highlights
It’s the final day of the New Jersey high school football season and we’ve got four fantastic games to close out the 2019 season. The highlights are posted from a full day of action at Rutgers! Holy Spirit 38 St. Joe (Hamm.) 0 | Non-Public Group 2 Championship In a rematch of the 2018 Non-Public Group 2 final, the Spartans got their revenge and then some. Patrick Smith rushed for a pair of touchdowns, E’lijah Gray scored a TD, and Trevor Cohen connected with Elijah Steward for a touchdown on offense. Spirit blocked a punt for a touchdown on special teams. And perhaps most impressively, the Spartans defense shut down the Wildcats all night long. Spirit dedicated the win to former player, head coach, and assistant coach Bill Walsh, who died less than a month ago after a courageous battle with ALS. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the highlights and reaction from Rutgers: Hillside 25 Cedar Creek 3 | South-Central Group 2 Regional Championship Hillside has reached perfection! The Comets close out a stellar 2019 campaign with a signature performance to end the year with a 12-0 record. James Louis found the end zone twice in the win while Nahree Biggins and Co. led a suffocating defensive outing. JSZ’s Jay Cook has all the highlights and post-game reaction: Woodrow Wilson 12 Wall 7 | South-Central Group 3 Regional Championship After falling to Rumson-Fair Haven a year ago, Woodrow Wilson returned to the South/Central Group 3 Regional Championship and defeated Wall. The Tigers scored in the first quarter on a Malik Harvey touchdown, but Wall would take a 7-6 lead at halftime. Defense ruled the second half with both teams coming up with big stops on fourth down. Quarterback Devin Kargman’s one-yard keeper put Wilson ahead 12-7 in the fourth quarter. Despite the Knights moving the ball well with under two minutes remaining, Malik Harvey would end the game with a strip to hand Wall its only loss of the season. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the highlights: Willingboro 50 Penns Grove 14 | South Group 1 Championship Au-Shaun Davis threw five first-half touchdown passes and the combination of Demie Sumo and Chris Long had three TD’s apiece as the Chimeras ended the 25-game win streak of Penns Grove and avenged last year’s Group Championship loss at MetLife Stadium. Long finished with 7 catches for 212 yards and 3 TD grabs making him the South Jersey single -season receiving yards leader. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the highlights of the final high school football game of 2019 in the Garden State:
