Lakewood’s Amir Tyler has given a verbal commitment to play Division I football at Temple. Piners head football coach LJ Clark informed Shore Sports Zone that the dynamic running back/defensive back will be heading to Philadelphia to play for the Owls. Tyler finished 4th in Shore Sports Zone’s voting for the Zoneman Trophy, given to the Shore Conference’s most outstanding high school football player. Tyler finished with 1060 yards and 20 touchdowns and had equally impressive numbers on the defensive side of the ball with 103 tackles, 4 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 4 interceptions. Tyler was at the Shore Sports Zone banquet at the Sheraton in Eatontown honored as one of the top players in the Shore:
Tyler joins Lakewood teammate Chapelle Cook, who just finished his freshman season with Temple. Like Cook, Tyler is expected to contribute on the defensive side of the ball in college. Cook played QB and LB at Lakewood and is now in the Owls linebacking corps. Tyler is expected to play safety in college. Coach Matt Rhule has built the Owls into one of the biggest turnaround programs in college football. The Owls spent time in the Top 25 in 2015 and is taking a 10-3 record to the Boca Raton Bowl on December 22nd against Toledo.
