The NJ state playoffs got underway on Tuesday as JSZ brings you a pair of games from the opening round slate. Shawnee and Absegami square off in the SJ Group 3 playoffs. Plus in Jersey City, St. Peter’s Prep looks to start strong against Dwight-Englewood in the Non-Public A North bracket. Check back as the highlights are posted throughout the night!


Shawnee 6 Absegami 1 | South Jersey Group 3 First Round

The sixth-seeded Renegades started fast, then leaned on some great pitching from UPenn commit Kayden Maybury and Delaware commit Tim Dougherty to get past the eleventh-seeded Braves. Maybury allowed one unearned run over five strong innings with seven strikeouts, and picked up his 100th career strikeout in the victory. Immaculata commit Lleyton Coughlin smashed his fifth home run of the year, while Connor Byrne finished with two RBIs for Shawnee (16-9). Conner Harless allowed one run over four-plus innings of relief for Absegami (16-9). Shawnee will face the winner of Hammonton and Toms River East in the sectional quarterfinals later this week.

St. Peter’s Prep 10 Dwight-Englewood 0 (6 inn.) | Non-Public “A” North First Round

6-seed St. Peter’s Prep started off their postseason strong on Tuesday, defeating 11-seed Dwight-Englewood 10-0 in six innings to advance to the Non-Public A North quarterfinals. Andrew Breihof and Zach Fernandes each had three RBIs for the Marauders, with all three of Fernandes’ coming off of an inside-the-park home run during their seven-run 2nd inning.

On the mound, Seton Hall commit Justin Chi pitched a complete game with 5 IP, 10 Ks, and 1 H allowed. The Marauders now move to Thursday’s regional quarterfinals where they will face 3-seed DePaul.
