JSZ 2021 Hockey Previews
Believe it or not, we’ve made it to the start of the high school hockey season in New Jersey. JSZ’s team of multimedia journalists are stopping by rinks all over as teams in the Garden State prepare for the start of the 2021 season on Jan. 15. Bookmark this page as we upload new previews daily leading up to the first puck drop next week! Christian Brothers Academy The defending Gordon Cup and state champions will not get a chance to defend their state crown at the Rock but paying for the school’s 10th Gordon Conference championship is plenty of incentive. With 2020 JSZ Hockey Player of the Year John Donohoe back in net, the Colts are expected to roll our four lines that are all capable of finding the net and a solid blueline anchored by captains Colin Grable and Lucas Salas. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis wraps up our hockey previews with a look at CBA: Don Bosco Prep Despite winning 20 games and making it to three tournament finals, Don Bosco has a chip on its shoulder coming into the new year. The Ironmen are bigger, faster and stronger in 2021, and don’t plan on falling short with as they’ll deploy a high-powered offense and a physical defense. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the preview: Rumson-Fair Haven Eric Zullo’s first season as RFH head coach saw the Bulldogs take a big step forward as a state ranked public school program thanks to a 16-3-3 record that featured a spot in the Public “C” quarterfinals and a Shore Conference Hanchden Cup championship. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis takes us to the Red Bank Armory to learn more about the 2021 Bulldogs: Bergen Catholic 2020 was a year that saw Bergen Catholic take a major step forward into becoming a state power. The Crusaders won their first Bergen County Tournament title, yet fell short in the Gordon Cup and Non-Public tournaments. Their sights are set on the state’s No. 1 ranking in 2021 behind an electric offense led by Aram Minnetian. JSZ’s Jay Cook features the Crusaders from Hackensack: Jersey Sports Zone’s coverage of Bergen Catholic is brought to you by Rothman Orthopaedics. St. Augustine The Hermits are eager to get back on the ice after opening round exits in the Gordon Cup and the state playoffs last season. St. Augustine finished .500 a year ago, and will count on a handful of key seniors to help the team compete in 2021. JSZ’s Mike Frankel checks in with the Hermits from The Igloo in Mt. Laurel: Morris Knolls After winning two straight Public A state titles and with 10 seniors returning to the mix, Morris Knolls has all the makings of entering 2021 as potentially the state’s top public school team. Jason Kwestel, Andrew Ryan and Tim Kepler will all wear C’s on their sweaters this year. With no state tournament this season, Knolls is wholly focused on winning the 2021 Mennen Cup. JSZ’s Jay Cook stopped by Aspen Ice in Randolph to preview the Golden Eagles: Westfield Finishing (15-8-2), Westfield fell short in the Union County Tournament final and was a game away from playing in Newark for a Public B championship in 2020. The Blue Devils graduated eight seniors but have a bevy of upperclassmen stepping into starting roles this year, which could be a determining factor in finishing during high-pressure situations. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the preview: Thank you to the office of Assemblymen Jon Bramnick for sponsoring our Westfield coverage. Gloucester Catholic The Rams have reached the state semifinals the last three years in a row, and are looking to take the next step by capturing a Gordon Cup title this winter. Defenseman Jake Grace leads an experienced GC senior class, with the Rams hoping a talented group of sophomores will step into the spotlight this year. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the preview from Hollydell Ice Arena: Gloucester Catholic coverage is made possible by NJM Insurance. Manasquan/Point Pleasant Beach The Warriors have won three straight Shore Conference Cups and will be challenged to go 4 for 4 with the departure of All-Zoners Matt Franzoni and Anthony Dowd but there’s still a lot of talent on the roster headlined by the Farinacci brothers (twins Michael and Chris along with James). Cousin John Farinacci fresh off a gold medal with Team USA at the World Juniors made an appearance at Warriors practice giving the team a big boost as they work towards the start of the 2021 season. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the story from Jersey Shore Arena in Wall: Delbarton After securing only 10 wins and finishing the year at .500 last season, Delbarton is gladly turning the page to 2021. At least nine freshman and numerous other underclassmen saw significant ice time for the Green Wave in 2020 – but with a year of experience under their belts, head coach Bruce Shatel is expecting a turnaround season. Anchoring Delbarton this year will be talented senior goalie Brett Cleaves. JSZ’s Jay Cook makes the pit stop at Aspen Ice to preview Delbarton:

Patterson Heading to Villanova Early
Rutgers Prep senior and 2019/2020 JSZ Mr. Hoop Zone finalist Trey Patterson will get a jump start on his college career. Patterson announced on social media that he’ll forgo his senior season with the Argonauts to enroll at Villanova for the spring semester. 💙 pic.twitter.com/aHNxv3fC6t— Trey Patterson (@_treypatt3) January 15, 2021 Patterson finishes his high school career as one of the top players in Rutgers Prep history. He averaged 20 points and ten rebounds per game last season, leading the Argonauts to 27 wins, and an appearance in the Non-Public B South final. JSZ produced Patterson’s official Wildcats commitment video back in June. Check it out here: You can watch his junior season highlights reel here:

Roselle Catholic’s Corey Floyd Jr. Commits to UCONN
New Jersey’s Class of 2022 is stacked with stellar guards with the ability to change a game with a single shot or dunk. Arguably the top guard in that class, Roselle Catholic’s Corey Floyd Jr., was the first to make a college verbal commitment. On Jan. 14, which was Floyd’s 17th birthday, he made the announcement via social media that he’s committed to play at the University of Connecticut. COMMITED‼️12/14/20🕊 pic.twitter.com/ArPE2YvGPF— Corey Floyd Jr. (@CoreyFloydJr) January 15, 2021 WATCH FLOYD JR.’S SOPHOMORE YEAR JSZ HIGHLIGHT REEL Floyd Jr., a 6-4, 210 pound guard, started for Roselle Catholic as a sophomore last season and was a major piece to the Lions’ 22-7 team that won the Non-Public B North sectional final a day before the NJSIAA shut down winter sports due to coronavirus concerns. He averaged 11.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 27 games in the 2019-2020 season. Floyd Jr. is the latest New Jersey product to commit to Dan Hurley’s Huskies squad, a group with numerous Garden State ties. Hurley, the son of NJ basketball legend Bob Hurley, has former Patrick School star Adama Sanogo on the roster now and also got a commitment from current Patrick School 6-9 big man Samson Johnson over the summer. Roselle Catholic will be featured in JSZ’s “All Access” series leading up to the start of the 2021 high school basketball season in New Jersey and Floyd Jr. will be profiled. The junior is quickly becoming one of the elite players across the Garden State. Stay tuned in with JerseySportsZone.com for all the latest news and recruiting updates from high school athletes all across New Jersey.

Year in Review: JSZ’s Top 20 of 2020
The year 2020 was made up of 12 unforgettable months. That sentiment especially rings true for New Jersey’s high school sports community. Jersey Sports Zone’s team of MMJ’s gathered for a year-in-review roundtable, discussing the Top 20 stories we covered this year. Thank you to our loyal audience who followed along with us through one of the most trying years we’ll remember. Happy New Year, and here’s to a happy and healthy 2021! JSZ Top 20 of 2020 Pt. 1 JSZ Top 20 of 2020 Pt. 2 No. 20: The Final Game Before COVID-19 Shutdown Bergen Catholic and St. Peter’s Prep. These two were among the top basketball teams in New Jersey last season, and delivered a double-overtime showdown in the last game JSZ covered in the 2020 winter season. It signaled the near end of the basketball season and the beginning of a long statewide shutdown. No. 19: Gill St. Bernard’s Rules NJ Soccer Scene 2020 was a year to remember for the Knights of Gill St. Bernard’s. All-state striker Micaah Garnette, who delivered 21 goals and 14 assists, was the main catalyst to a 13-0-1 squad that went on to win a Central West Non-Public sectional final against Skyland rival Pingry. The Knights were undoubtedly the top team at the end of the line. No. 18: Leon Jones’ Inspiring Comeback It was a year in which many would have to overcome tough circumstances. For Notre Dame’s Leon Jones, his journey to redemption began before COVID-19. Following a collision against St. Peter’s Prep in a playoff football game, Jones was left paralyzed for almost 48 hours. After regaining feeling in both of his legs, doctors were still unsure if he would be able to walk normally, let alone play sports again. However, midway through the basketball season, Leon Jones not only started his first game as a senior, but Jersey Sports Zone was there to watch him lead his team to victory. No. 17: South Jersey’s Ware & Watson Earn Top Basketball Honors There was no shortage of talent on the high school basketball court last winter, but Camden’s Lance Ware and Mainland’s Kylee Watson proved to be the best of the best. Ware, a Kentucky commit, was the senior leader for a Panthers team that finished the season on a 25-game winning streak. Watson, an Oregon commit, surpassed 2,000 career points in a decorated career for the Mustangs. Ware and Watson earned the JSZ Mr. and Ms. Hoop Zone awards, as the top players in the Garden State. No. 16: Camden Basketball Reigns Supreme in Garden State Hoops Scene It was the most anticipated season for The High in a generation, and the Panthers did not disappoint. Led by fabulous freshman D.J. Wagner, Kentucky commit Lance Ware, and South Carolina commit TaQuan Woodley, Camden went (29-1). The High was without a home gym for the 2019/2020 season, but Panthers fans followed the team all over the state and beyond to watch this special journey. Camden was in great position to win its first state title since 2000, before the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to the postseason. No. 15: Delbarton Wrestling Delivers Historic Year on the Mat When wrestling fans in Morristown – and across the state – look back on the 2019-2020 season, they’ll remember the incredible effort Delbarton put forth to cement themselves as the No. 1 program in New Jersey. It all started with a 42-15 victory over Bergen Catholic in the Non-Public A North semifinals where the Green Wave ended the Crusaders’ 96-match win streak against NJSIAA competition. That began a run of postseason excellence ending in Delbarton’s first state title since 2011. No. 14: CBA, Donohoe are Kings of NJ Ice The Gordon Conference is home to the elite New Jersey hockey programs, yet it was the private school from Monmouth County that slayed numerous Bergen County teams en route to attaining gold at the end of the road. The Colts, who won 20 games, the Gordon Cup and the Non-Public State Final, were led all year long by sophomore goalie John Donohoe. Donohoe went on to win JSZ’s 2020 Player of the Year after making 501 saves in electric fashion. No. 13: Jewel Gonzalez Sets the Standard A pioneer to Stateliner and New Jersey wrestling, Jewel Gonzalez was the face of girls wrestling in New Jersey during her high school career. Coming from one of the most storied and successful wrestling programs in the Garden State in Phillipsburg, Gonzalez won back-to-back girls state wrestling championships in Boardwalk Hall. During her two seasons, Gonzalez amassed an undefeated 30-0 record as she pinned her way through the state tournament as a senior. Gonzalez capped off her state championship the same way many other Stateliners had done before her, by jumping into the ocean. No. 12: JSZ’s “One Shining Moment” As the world shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic, JSZ set out to commemorate the best of the 2019-20 high school basketball season. With the blessing of the song’s composer, David Barrett, JSZ was able to produce a unique version of the March Madness staple, “One Shining Moment.” No. 11: Scottie Lewis Leads off the Court Rounding out Part 1 of our look back at 2020 is a story that transcended sports. Ranney-alumni Scottie Lewis returned home to Asbury Park to lead a peaceful protest over the summer. It was a day that few would forget as organizers, protesters, and police officers joined together to rally against racial injustice and inequality. No. 10: Abrupt Cancellations of Two High-Profile Games Postponements and cancellations were common during the 2020 football season. The timing of a pair of cancellations stood out late in the season though, as Bergen Catholic-Delbarton was called off just before kickoff, and Williamstown-Ocean City was abandoned at halftime. No. 9: Morristown-Beard Girls Hockey Makes History Girls sports in the Garden State took another important step forward in 2020 with the inaugural state ice hockey championship. Morristown-Beard skated to victory at the Prudential Center in Newark. No. 8: Bosco and Seton Hall Prep Earn Signature Wins It felt like Bergen Catholic would face St. Peter’s with the state’s #1 ranking on the line to close out the year. Don Bosco and Seton Hall Prep had other ideas. The Ironmen stunned the Crusaders, while the Pirates topped the Marauders down the stretch of the season. No. 7: A SportsCenter Top 10 Moment for Manasquan Chris Farinacci beat the buzzer with a sensational goal to lift Manasquan over St. John Vianney. The highlight went national, making the rounds on ESPN. No. 6: Shore Conference and WJFL Pod Playoffs The 2020 football season didn’t feature the traditional playoff format. The Shore Conference and the West Jersey Football League still made it a memorable “postseason” for a handful of top teams, with the creation of playoff pods. Wall and Holy Spirit battled their way to 2020 bragging rights. No. 5: Howard and Peterson Electrify in Atlantic City Robert Howard and Dean Peterson both travelled down to Atlantic City on a mission. The standouts from Bergen Catholic and St. John Vianney captured state titles in impressive fashion at Boardwalk Hall. No. 4: Estime Wins Zoneman & Commits to Irish Audric Estime ran roughshod over opponents in 2020. The St. Joe’s (Montvale) senior earned JSZ’s top football honor, the Zoneman award, and flipped his commitment from Michigan State to Notre Dame. It was an eventful day for Estime, and JSZ was on hand to capture it. No. 3: A JSZ All-Access Unlike Any Other Football teams had extra time to gear up for a unique season, and JSZ tagged along with a handful of squads leading up to opening night. We were able to tell unique stories from the practice fields at Bergen Catholic, Notre Dame, Ocean City and Rumson-Fair Haven, as the teams laid the groundwork on how to play during the COVID-19 pandemic. No. 2: Spring Athletes Were Truly Jersey Strong The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the entire spring sports schedule in 2020. It was devastating to thousands of athletes, but especially to the seniors. A handful of those seniors delivered a powerful message as they reflected on their high school careers. No 1: The Last Dance Brought Closure and Hope Although it wasn’t an official NJSIAA event, The Last Dance baseball tournament gave over 200 teams a chance to finally take the field after the cancellation of the spring season. It was a memorable month of July, as Cranford won the title, and all of the teams provided a blueprint on how high school sports could move forward during the darkest of times.

Jordan Kinsler wins JSZ Football Play of the Year!
The hours of footage captured by our cameras and voting from numerous fanbases across the Garden State all football season long have finally led to this! Winning our Viewer’s Choice Top Play, Jordan Kinsler of St. Joseph (Metuchen) went up against some tough nominees for Play of the Year with his 80 yard touchdown run against Ridge. However, Falcon nation has spoken and he is JSZ’s overall Top Play Winner for the 2020 season! Thank you and best of luck to all of our nominees. NJ Soccer Star Emily Mason on a Mission
It’ll be hard to imagine New Jersey high school girls soccer without Emily Mason. The 2019-2020 Gatorade National Player of the Year closed out her career at Hunterdon Central just over a month ago, and now that this chapter of her career has concluded, Mason has her sights set on being in the upper echelon of women’s soccer going forward. Mason headlines Rutgers’ incoming Class of 2021 signees and has also made a name as one of the youngest players on the Under-20 U.S. Women’s National soccer team. Mason’s name could be familiar to soccer fans around the country if she keeps working to her goal leading up to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story:

Woodbridge’s Ali Lee Jr. Signs With Stony Brook Football
In three seasons Woodbridge has gone from a .500 team to one of New Jersey’s top public school programs, posting a 15-2 record the last 2 years. A big part of that was running back Ali Lee Jr. who ended 2020 with 1,161 rushing yards, 17 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Bringing his career totals to just shy of 4,000 yards and 52 scores. Lee Jr. made his college commitment official by signing with Stony Brook University early Monday morning. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the story and check out his featured coverage below: 2020 All-Zone feature: Junior season highlight reel: JSZ A to Z Feature:

Geno VanDeMark Signs NLI with Michigan State
One of New Jersey’s most physical and talented offensive lineman officially has a new home. St. Joe’s (Mont.) offensive tackle Geno VanDeMark put pen to paper Friday morning and officially signed his NLI with Michigan State. A two-time JSZ All-Zone player, VanDeMark gave a verbal commitment to the Spartans prior to the start of the 2020 season. Other schools, like Rutgers University, came in with a late push to try and swing the 6-5, 300 pound lineman. VanDeMark, a native of Lodi, NJ, is the second offensive lineman in as many years to sign with a Big 10 program. Last season, it was Ohio State’s Luke Wypler. JSZ’s Jay Cook spoke with VanDeMark moments after he signed on with the Spartans: Watch Geno VanDeMark’s 2020 JSZ All-Zone Profile Watch Geno VanDeMark’s “JSZ A to Z” Feature Jersey Sports Zone’s coverage of St. Joe’s (Mont.) is brought to you by Rothman Orthopaedics.

Meet the 2020 JSZ All-Zone Football Team
JSZ honors a season unlike any other with our fourth annual JSZ All-Zone team. We’ve got the top players from New Jersey at every position and the announcement of our 4th Zoneman Trophy Winner The 2020 football season provided incredible memories in the midst of adversity. Despite teams losing games due to the pandemic, JSZ cameras were able to find the best of the best from New Jersey high school football. All this week, we will present the 2020 JSZ All-Zone football team. Audric Estime wins 2020 JSZ Zoneman The St. Joe-Montvale running back will always remember the day he won the Zoneman Trophy. That’s because he happened to make national headlines when he flipped his commitment from Michigan State to Notre Dame signing with the Irish shortly after accepting the JSZ Zoneman Trophy. Estime was a force topping 1800 yards and 22 ground scores in just eight games of action Watch JSZ’s Zoneman Trophy presentation and an extended interview with Audric during his signing day ceremony: Estime received 33 votes from JSZ’s 72 person voting panel of head coaches and statewide media: Thank you to the head coaches and statewide media who cast their vote for the 2020 Zoneman Coaches: Joe Wojechowski, Lenape, Sean Clancy, Notre Dame, Rich Hilliard, St. Joe-Metuchen, Joe LaSala, Woodbridge, Vin Mistretta, Jackson Memorial, Montrey Wright, Salem, Kenny Scott, Winslow, Kevin Smith, Ocean City, Pat Gallagher, Williamstown, Steve Scanlon, Clearview, Chris Sacco, Absegami, Tim Gushue, Shawnee, Pete Lancetta, St. Augustine, John Whitehead, Paramus Catholic, Vito Campanile, Bergen Catholic, John McKenna, DePaul Catholic, Dan Sabella, Don Bosco Prep, Darnell Grant, West Orange, Bill Fitzgerald, Seton Hall Prep, David Schuman, Red Bank Regional, Dan Curcione, Donovan Catholic, Jeff Rainess, Holmdel, Jim Raso, Hammonton, Rich Hansen, St. Peter’s Prep, Tony Grandinetti, Wall, Jim Sharples, Jackson Liberty, Dom Marangi, St. Joe-Montvale, Mike Lange, Red Bank Catholic, Don Klein, Ocean Township, Bryant Garvin, Newark East Side, Jason Acerra, Bayonne, Andrew Patterson, Robbinsville, Brian Bowers, Delbarton, Todd Smith, Hun, Chris Beagen, Sayreville, Dave Ellis, Freehold Boro, Al Chiola, Linden, Dallas Whitaker, Somerville, John Viotto, South Brunswick, John Emel, Penns Grove, Rob Davis, Barnegat, Brian Russo, Rahway, Lou Grasso, Union, Roger Kotlarz, Wayne Valley, Scott Bray, Bridgewater-Raritan, Kevin Kostibos, Summit, Len Zdanowicz, Brick Township Media: Rich Chrampanis, JSZ, Jay Cook, JSZ, Nery Rodriguez, JSZ, Mike Frankel, JSZ, Kenneth Bradley, JSZ, James Mooney, JSZ, Andrew Koob, NJ.com, Sean Miller, NJ.com, Mike McGarry, Press of Atlantic City, Kevin Minnick, NJ.com, Tom Williams, Prime Events, Pat Lanni, NJ.com, Ryan Patti, Rivals.com, Dave McCarthy, McCarthy Report, Shawn Brown, 247 Sports, Chris Melvin, Asbury Park Press, Todderick Hunt, NJ.com, Mike Kinney, NJ.com, Joe Zedalis, NJ.com, Bob Badders, Shore Sports Network, Chris Gallagher, News 12 NJ, Sunil Sunder Raj, Gannett, Kyle Franco, NJ.com, John Jones, Max Preps, GMC Gridron 2020 JSZ All-Zone Non-Public Offense (Click player’s name to watch their JSZ All-Zone profile!) Now Tahj Bullock’s illustrious high school career is over – and he’ll be discussed as one of the most impactful player to ever play for the Marauders. Bullock, a Virginia Tech commit, flashed in the six games St. Peter’s Prep played in this season. He completed 51 percent of his passes for 818 yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of 12:0. Ducee also accounted for 306 yards and six more touchdowns on the ground, bringing his career touchdown total to an impeccable 52 scores. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story on Bullock Cookie Desiderio, Somerville RB Players like Cookie Desiderio don’t come around very often – and the numbers he produced in 2020 were just as unique. The Somerville bruiser exceeded every and all exception in this wild season with 1,569 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns on only 152 carries. That comes out to 10.3 yards every single time Desiderio took a handoff. You know what makes those numbers so impressive? It’s the fact that Desiderio did it in only seven games and that he surpassed every single benchmark he previously set in his junior season. Desiderio becomes the second player in Somerville history to be nominated for the award (Jalahn Dabney, 2018.) The recognition is well-deserved. JSZ’s Nery Rodriguez has the feature: Audric Estime, St. Joe’s (Mont.) RB Audric Estime put in an offseason for the ages to deliver one of the most dominant single season efforts anyone has ever seen in North Jersey. While playing in arguably one of the toughest divisions in the entire country, the St. Joe’s (Mont.) product ran roughshod over the competition for 190 carries, 1,857 yards and 22 touchdowns. All of those were career highs in only eight games played. The Michigan State commit was also the only player in the state to account for 2,000 scrimmage yards and finished 2020 with a total 2,042 yards and 24 touchdowns. The Big 10 better be ready for what’s coming. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story: Casey Larkin, Wall ATH Both the soul and heartbeat of Wall’s undefeated 2020 team is, without question, Casey Larkin. A starter on both sides of the ball for the Crimson Knights, Larkin shined in every game he played. At running back, he rushed for 870 yards and 13 touchdowns on only 97 carries. At defensive back, Larkin anchored the Crimson Knights defense with 32 tackles, five pass defenses and a fumble recovery. Wall won the unofficial Shore Conference championship this season and finished the year 7-0. Larkin delivered two standout performances in the semifinal and finals. Some in New Jersey consider Wall to be the state’s top-ranked team – if they indeed are, then Larkin had a major say in that decision. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has the story: Patrick “Cheeks” Smith, Holy Spirit RB If you ask any high school football fanatic in South Jersey who the area’s top player was this season, the answer would be short and quick: Cheeks. Patrick Smith, the Holy Spirit standout, was an absolute force to be reckoned with every time the rock was in his hands. Smith concluded an unforgettable 2020 campaign with 1,719 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on a workhorse-like 221 carries this season. Holy Spirit ended the season at 8-0 after becoming the unofficial South Jersey champions with a 21-7 win over Lenape in the WJFL Bracket A Final. Smith’s incredible top-end speed and vision helped drive the Spartans to the upper echelon on New Jersey high school football in a crazy season. JSZ’s Mike Frankel has the feature: JSZ Plays of the Year The JSZ Football Plays of the Year will wrap up on December 21st with the six winners of each category vying for the top overall play of the year. NJ Football Shines on National Signing Day
Football players from every corner of the state put pen to paper Wednesday as National Letters of Intent were signed on National Signing Day. JSZ has features from both the North and South regions of the Garden State, as well as a roundup of notable signings. West Side’s Banton, Loyal Ink with Rutgers Khayri Banton and Shaquan Loyal highlight Rutgers’ in-state Class of 2021 signees. The West Side products grew up with each other, played side by side through high school and signed their NLI’s with Greg Schiano’s Scarlet Knights on Wednesday. JSZ’s Jay Cook has the story on what makes this Newark duo special: Donovan Catholic Lineman Camron McNair Chooses Holy Cross In Toms River, there was mystery surrounding JSZ All-Zone offensive lineman Camron McNair. Four hats were laid out at the table with McNair choosing Holy Cross over Maine, LIU and Fordham. JSZ’s Rich Chrampanis has this story. NJSIAA sets table for full spring sports season
The NJSIAA has released dates for the 2021 spring sports season. After no spring sports in 2020, the state’s governing high school authority has state playoffs on the calendar for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began After watching the traditional state playoffs put on the back burner for the fall and winter sports seasons, the NJSIAA has released a 2021 spring sports schedule that gives athletes the chance to return to traditional postseason play. The start of the spring sports season is pushed back to an April 1st start date for practice with competition beginning on April 19th (April 9 for golf) and a post-season in June that will allow for state championship to be crowned in lacrosse, baseball and softball along with golf and boys tennis. The NJSIAA’s newly formed “Season 3” for the winter features wrestling, girls gymnastics and girls volleyball which will overlap the beginning o fthe spring sports season. Athletes and coaches will be able to begin spring sports as soon as their Season 3 comes to an end. “Minimizing overlap and avoiding direct conflicts between sports has always been a top priority of the Sports Advisory Task Force,” said Dave Frazier, chair of the task force. “After the loss of the spring 2020season, we want to ensure every student-athlete has the opportunity to participate in each sport they would have during a normal year.” The winter sports season is set to start in January with hockey beginning regular season play on January 15th and boys and girls basketball to follow on January 26th. With wrestling, gymnastics and girls volleyball set to start in March, the spring sports season will be the first opportunity to have traditional state playoffs and champions. “Multi-sport athletes should be celebrated, and not made to choose between two sports that they love,” said Colleen Maguire, COO of the NJSIAA. “As a result of indoor practices and competition being suspended per Executive Order No. 204, some overlap between seasons is unavoidable. But based on our latest plan, student-athletes will still have the opportunity to compete during all seasons.”
