SSZ profiles Saint John Vianney guard Kelly Campbell as she looks to lead the Lady Lancers to a state championship
The Shore Conference girls basketball landscape is filled with numerous Division I talents who can grab the headlines with huge scoring efforts. Saint John Vianney’s Kelly Campbell averages 15.4 points per game for the Lady Lancers, but does so much more for one of the state’s top teams. Her versatility is shown in the big games, like 19 points, 8 asssits and five rebounds in a January win over Manasquan and a 28 points, 8 steal effort against Rumson-Fair Haven. Campbell is one of the best free throw shooters in the state, hitting over 90 percent from the charity stripe.
“I don’t really care much about being on the radar,” Campbell said. “I don’t really care about points and all that stuff. I care about winning, getting the rebound, getting the steal – that kind of stuff matters to me more than scoring.”
Kelly has already give a commitment to play for DePaul prior to her junior season. The Big East program has made 12 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. By getting her recruiting out of the way early, she can put her sole focus on getting the Lady Lancers titles over the next two seasons. Saint John Vianney is the #3 seed in the upcoming Shore Conference Tournament and plays the winner of Brick Memorial and Matawan in the opening round. Following the SCT, the Lady Lancers are the top seed in the Non Public “A” bracket and have a first round bye.
